Interesting. Can anyone recall a single time Kris Draper’s said anything to the media that could be construed as controversial or critical of another player? Even after his face was ravaged by one of the more cowardly hits in NHL history, Draper said little to nothing.
Draper, who’s never shirked his responsibilities after Wing losses, who’s never said an ill thing about an opponent, who’s respected league wide…is now just making stuff up. Right?
“Nick was waiting and waiting, and Crosby didn’t come over to shake his hand” in the traditional handshake line. He added that, “that’s ridiculous, especially as their captain, and make sure you write that I said that.”
Pens fans, and we’ll get to them soon, like to point out that Gary’s Baby Boy was being interviewed, distracted, roadblocked from leading his team through the handshake line. Got it.
“There’s nobody who respects the traditions of hockey more than Sidney Crosby. It was a young team celebrating its first Cup and some of the guys might have been a little late getting into the handshake line.”
That’s the Pens VP of comms. “Some of the guys…” Really? One of the guys, actually. The rest of “the guys” were looking behind them, wondering where their “captain” was.
Rosby’s a joke of a captain and we all know it, have known it. We saw it as neutral observers then became more aware of it during last year’s Final. We saw him refuse to give Hank Zetterberg credit for stifling him, for his play on the 5-3..but that was after he chased him across the ice squealing at him. Then we saw the real Crosby after Games 1 and 2 this year, playing the bitch role to perfection again.
Bitter the Wings lost? Sure. Bitter that they lost to Maxime Talbot? No. He owns the Wings and I’ll have nightmares about him for months. To Dan Bylsma? Definitely not. Hell, when Mike Babcock moves on in five or six years, and he will because that’s the nature of the business, we’ll take Bylsma. No problem. Michigan boy. Class act.
But Crosby? If he’s been looking forward to this his entire life, as the Pens organization is now saying, to include Mario Lemieux…if he’s so in tune with the “traditions of hockey”...how does that happen? How does little Thid the boy captain not get his ass to the front of that line?
Got a couple emails this morning. Here’s one from a Pens fan and I won’t put the whole thing here….just a few sentences to give you a feel for the tone.
How sweet it really is to shove this right back in your face for being a disrespectful writer whinning about everything possible and being the cockiest fanbase in the NHL. I hope the sight of crosby skating with the cup is printed in your mind forever and i hope you have a HORRIBLE day sobbing and crying over this.
That’s from Kevin, an A2Y fan. Kevin, instead of celebrating his team’s Stanley Cup, chose to write a heartfelt email to yours truly and whine for four paragraphs about how “disrespected” he felt as a Pens fan that I didn’t give his team the necessary credit for their victory.
Also got an email from the PensBlog guys today, asking where their Blogger’s Championship Belt is.
![]()
There you go boys. Congratulations.
And here’s something else…we’ve received some decent comments from good Pens fans here the last few days, a good number of them in fact. Good people and good fans who have come here to congratulate the Wings, Wing fans, the organ-I-zation, for a great Final and a great series. Thanks.
And then there have been many more who said things like this…
“What a joke of a town that is nothing but a pariah to the US. Can we vote to exclude them and their worthless beings from the U.S.. Get a f*cking job and stop asking for handouts and bailouts you f*cking losers.
Posted by Pensssss on 06/13/09 at 03:52 AM ET”
And that’s tame. But it’s one of literally hundreds since the Final began. Hundreds of comments almost identical to that.
I have exactly zero doubt where that “fan” came from or which blog he’s a product of. And because I’m certain of that I can say this: I’d be humiliated if any of you had gone over there to say things like that after the Wings won last year. It would be an embarrassment and an indictment of us all. The Pens “fans” who have come here spewing that or something like it are the definition of scum. The very definition of it.
Going after the team and me for the way I write is one thing, and it’s expected. But to those PensBlog readers who have come here before, during and after the Final to use it as a means to rub Michigan’s economic tragedy in the faces of those who have been devastated….you are despicable. And if the PensBlog operators are aware of it and not doing something about it, you’re no better and that’s a fact.
But, thankfully, there is humor to be found here. Humor in the fact that the tone is shifting from the disgusting to the bizarre. In the span of the last fifteen or sixteen hours the Pens “fans” are now coming here to whine that we haven’t given them the necessary “credit.” One ended their comment with this, “We have a damn good team.” Awww. We know you do. You won the Cup didn’t you?
You could almost hear the sobs. It’s been less than 48 hours since their team won the Cup and here they are…whining because I haven’t written something like, “the Wings lost to the better team.” That will never be written here. Ever. Not about this series. Injuries and officiating. Injuries and officiating. Those who have been here long enough recognize that and who said it first.
Hossa. I believe he’s staying because he’s said he’d take less to do so. He’s a character guy, despite the wire brushing he’s taking here and will all summer. And he’s completely embarrassed right now.
No. I don’t know how Tick Tock is going to make it happen, but I believe he will. And I’ll say this, I don’t have to analyze numbers or charts. I don’t have to because I never have. I’m going on gut and if you guys want to crunch numbers go ahead.
I believe Sammy is gone and wouldn’t be surprised if Hudler was too. I also think Kirk Maltby is gone, bought out if possible. One way or another Ken Holland is going to keep Marian Hossa in the fold and it’s going to be around 5 million/year for at least 7…if not 7 on the dot.
Holland will keep him because Hossa is a character guy and it will give the Wings a group of forwards unmatched by any team in the league, a mixture of speed, talent, grit and firepower no one can touch. Ken Holland is not going to keep Hudler and Samuelsson if it means re-signing one of the top ten forwards in the world for five million or less/year.
Hossa’s staying. And he’s going to be a madman next year. He’s going to be Verlander.

On this Cap stuff, I too don’t really see a way to sign Hossa. The only way I got it to work is to sign Hossa for $4.5M (which is very low), sign Leino for $1M and obviously lose all other FAs, while bringing Abby up full time. Then, you still have to drop Lebda. Meech, Holmstrom, and Maltby, leaving the team with only 10 forwards and only $1,146,013 to sign 2 forwards.
I like Rafalski, but $6M a year? Way too much, and it doesn’t expire until 2012. That contract is gonna be tough on us over the next few years. He needs to be down there with Stuart and Kronwall in the $3-4M range, then we’d have no worries at all.
On the bright side, if we don’t sign Hossa, we can keep Huds, Homer, and Maltby, and keep Abby in GR for 1 more year, and as long as we don’t sign Lebda, Meech, Kopie and Sammy, have $1.3M left to sign 1 forward, or keep 1 of them.

Sorry, Pen(i)s fans, but this loss just doesn’t sting that much. The regular season loss to San Jose was much more difficult to take. The blowout loss to Columbus kept me up for days. Not this, not even close.

Same here, and I attribute it all to the Cup hangover.

Instead of trading barbs, how about some serious hockey conversation?
If I were a Wings fan, a topic of discussion would be what Babcock was thinking when he replaced Abdelkader with Draper.
The kid had a hot hand and was giving your team tons of energy and speed.
I could see putting-in the veteran when he was available for Game 3, perhaps even Game 4. But when it became obvious that Abdelkader was the more productive of the two and the series became a best of 3, I’d think it’s a no-brainer to go back to him.

What still gets me about it is that I cannot ever remember a time where winning a series earlier gets you LESS rest.
Actually, it didn’t happen this time either. The Penguins finished their series earlier, not the Red Wings, and was rewarded.
Posted by Moq from Denmark on 06/14/09 at 11:11 AM ET
Well AJ, saying Abby should have been in when it was a best of 3 is a little off because, well we won Game 5, and Draper scored our only goal in Game 6, and I don’t think you put a kid in after resting for a week and a half in Game 7 of the SCF.
I think he would have been in for Sammy, or Maltby, or Huds, or even Homer if he was comfortable playing the wing, but he’s not and we didn’t have any center spots open and you don’t put in a guy who’s uncomfortable with his position in the Finals.

Maybe if you read the whole thing you’d understand. It had nothing to do with who finished first between Detroit and Pitt, but if Detroit had won over Chicago in 6 instead of 5 they would have had a longer break.
Funny how all of a sudden there are so many people that can’t follow basic logic, I wonder why…

While I don’t condone it, please don’t forget that there are a few of your own who have used terms like “hillbillies, hayseeds, Pissburgh, and Shitsburgh”.
Are you seriously arguing that using terms like that (or “Detoilet,” “DeJoke,” etc., which do not bother us) have the same weight as wanting to see someone lose their job, become homeless, and see their children starve? Or that making fun of a man permanently disabled by a drunk driver is justifiable in light of someone calling Pittsburgh “Pissburgh?”
As for you being the arbiter of what makes a true Pens fan, good luck. Let me know how that works out for you.

This wasn’t addressed to me but….
Looking at the obvious part of the picture, YOU had absolutly nothing to do with any of the above.
Ummmmm…...how much did YOU have to do with any of the Detroit milestones that were cited?
My guess is you weren’t even born when most of the above occurred.
So go back to your bong in your parents basement, and continue to dream you matter.
Personally, I was around to see the Pittsburgh Hornets win the 1966-67 Calder Cup before they were replaced by the Penguins in 1967. I attended the first Penguins game vs Montreal in ‘67. I was even at the 1960 World Series when Pittsburgh won it. I’ve seen all 6 Steeler Super Bowl wins.
But since I personally didn’t play on any of those teams, I guess by your hypocritical logic, I cannot comment on any of them the way a Detroiter can cite their past victories…right?
I just want to know the rules of the double standard that is in place here.

First off, I never claimed I had anything to do with being part of the team accomplishing the feats I listed, I’m just a fan, same as everyone else here on these boards. I was only making a point to rebut some ridiculous arguments made by Red Winger.
And sorry, your guess is completely off base because I have been alive to watch and celebrate each and every one of the championships that I listed.

And I wouldn’t be surprised to see him contend for the Richard, as well as learn how to deflect shots and be a pest in front of the net from Homer in order to add yet another weapon to his arsenal of goal-scoring tools.
Hossa used to do that. He stopped doing it in 2007-2008 in Atlanta. Many of us here thought he was dogging it, trying to save himself from playing hard until after he was inevitably traded at the deadline.
First game with Pittsburgh? Injury. For those of us in Atlanta, it seemed like poetic justice at the time. Since 2007-2008, however, I haven’t seen him do any deflections, go hard to the net, and he seems to have lost his high gear.
The Detroit fan in me would love to see a resurgence of Hossa. The Atlanta fan in me couldn’t give a shit less.

Saw Draper’s comments last night, and I do think they’re significant. It’s tempting to read a lot more into his remarks, and I doubt you’d be far from the truth in doing so.
In my opinion, it’s time to stop feeding the trolls. The Chief hit on the source of the problem, and if his one-blogger-to-another appeal to do something about it falls on deaf ears, well, that’s too bad—but the functional illiterates who continue to spew their inexcusably mean-spirited nonsense into our comments section are beneath further acknowledgment. Clearly there is something wrong with them personally, and the more we indulge their pathologies, the worse it will get.
I know I’m appreciated around these here parts. No constant affirmation needed to validate my self worth. No pouting from this lady.[/quote

Thanks for the info, Alan. I had no idea that Hossa used to deflect pucks—I don’t watch much EC hockey at the best of times. I’m just hoping that, if we do extend him, you’re a bigger Wings fan than a Thrashers fan.

Don’t try logic with these people AJ…especially Red Winger. They think they’re so sophisticated and on top of the hockey world. Reality is, they had two shots to knock off the Pens and couldn’t score more than one goal in either game.
Their fans are one step above Philly’s..cheering when Sid was injured..CLASSLESS. They’re whining about Sid not making it to the line in time to shake Lidstrom’s hand….Yet cheer their dipshit owner for snubbing Bettman.
Sid was caught up in the moment and was distracted…Your owner was being a whiny bitch…Kinda like Lidstrom and Draper for sulking off early.

Yes, Draper scored the only Wings goal in Game 6. Yet it wasn’t enough and Abdelkader was certainly capable of scoring multiple goals in one game as we all saw.
I’d have definitely tried to fit someone that was so hot into the lineup.

Yeah, I was thinking that the thing to do would be to be classy and gracious and stuff, but you mouth-breathing Red Wings fans, who can’t get over your cutesy names for great players, are making it tough not to laugh in your faces.

This is your Captain, drinking from the Cup. Normally that image causes vomiting among hockey fans, but there is humour in how stupid Rosby makes one of the coolest things on the planet look. He is so lame he can’t even be cool drinking from the Cup.

Rosby is WASHING the bitter taste the Wings leave in his MOUTH out. The stifling defence by Zetterberg that will never be acknowledged. His hissy fits that we never notice. All that and more leave a bad taste, and Sydney Crosby is WASHING his MOUTH. In French? Douche Bouche

Actually, there were a number of comments about Pittburghers and our city that were equally as disgusting…I just didn’t quote everything. I also personally never saw this supposed joke about anyone being disabled, but I did hear the crowd at JLA applauding a Penguin getting injured….. which doesn’t strike me as being too awfully classy.
As for you being the arbiter of what makes a true Pens fan, good luck. Let me know how that works out for you.
I don’t believe I ever claimed to be the arbiter over anyone. I hope you don’t make a practice of reading things into people’s words very often. I do however have the right to tell a Pens fan when I think they aren’t being much of a loyal fan if they were to say a regular season loss was worse than losing a freakin’ Championship. Sheesh….I can’t even believe you’d argue such a ridiculous concept.

I love them both equally. Which makes it kind of tough when the two teams play each other. At Philips last year, I wore a Wings hat and a Thrashers sweater. If they play here again this year, I’ll switch it up. Always have ![]()

Man, I’ve heard of sore losers, but sore winners? Do all the Pens fans posting here want all the Wings fans to bow at the altar of the Penguin or something? It ain’t gonna happen. Congrats, your team is the 2009 Cup Champs, enjoy it and all the fun that comes with it. This wasn’t (and isn’t) the end for the Wings and we know that. Next year they will have as strong a chance to win the Cup as anyone and if it’s not next year, then the year after, ecetera. My dad waited 30 years for the Wings to win the Cup and I had to wait about 17. My brother waited all of 10 years and now there are some fans who didn’t know this franchise without having a Cup in the modern era.
We’ve seen Yzerman and Fedorov turn over to Zetterberg and Datsyuk. We’ve seen the Wings re-claim re-treads like Samuelsson and Cleary and turn them into important role players and big game goal scorers. We’ve seen the Wings take Larry Murphy and Brad Stuart from the scrap heap and help them regain their dominance or attain their potential.
In short, wer’ve seen this franchise do it all, from pulling off coup trades for a Hart/Vezina goaltender or a dominant Irish winger to drafting superstars in the 7th round. So, we will not be down, we will not declare fealty to the Pens or Gary.Ass or Thid. We will not willingly cede the title of dominance because one year, one series does not erase 12 years of league dominance. You are the City of Champions this year and again I say kudos to you for that. But, the Wings have won more Cups than all the Pittsburgh teams combined have won titles in the past 12 years. To me, that still makes this place Hockeytown.
The Wings and their fans will be ready next year. Some players (and fans) will be better for this experience, all wiser and that just makes the team that much more dangerous. So, again I say enjoy the summer. You’ve got 15 more years of making the playoffs, four more Finals appearances and three more Cups in the next 11 years for the Pens to equal what the Wings have done in that same span.

With all due respect, I think you didn’t as much win game 5 as the Pens lost game 5 by being so undisciplined.
Seriously? You can’t be this freaking stupid. You got beat 5-0. Read it again, 5-0.
You Pens fans cry when we say that officiating had something to do with the series because we’re not giving you respect and then you say we didn’t actually win Game 5, it was given to us.
That’s it, all gloves are off, and before you start crying, remember, you asked for it with that asinine comment.
You guys didn’t win the series, the refs won it by never calling Hall Gill for interference once during the entire series even though he interferes on every single dump and chase, and yet, Ericsson is called for the exact same thing in Game 3, giving the Pens the victory. If that call isn’t made, Game 3 goes to ot and if the Wings win, series is over in 5. Not only that, but since it was kinda hard for us to play offense when we could never get the puck on dumps with all the interference. And I don’t wanna hear about “sublte picks” in the offensive zone, all teams do that.
Also speaking of Game 3, didn’t Malkin have a big night that game? Funny because he shouldn’t have even been playing, as he was “automatically suspended.” Except the league decided that wouldn’t be fair down 2 games to 0.
You guys didn’t win the series, injuries lost it for the Wings. If our Hart Trophy candidate can play the entire series, again, completely different series.
See, we can play that game too.
Pittsburgh fans must be the most clueless, stupidest fans I’ve ever had to read comments from. Not suprising since most of you weren’t hockey fans until Crosby was drafted.
Idiots.

Why would you even want to sign the albotross Hossa, you were more dominate last year without him, he never did anything for the sens, the pens, and now the wings, ( playoffs ), this is a trend, dump the 7.5 mill and invest in the youth you have, or sure up the goaltending. Babcock must feel the same way,,, game 7, goalie pulled, and hossa sitting on the bench, thats all you that needs to be said.

Sorry to feed the trolls, but ...
http://www.uniwatchblog.com/2009/06/14/the-ultimate-uniform/ (Scroll down to The Wrong Cup)
The Wrong Cup? After the Penguins captured another title for Pittsburgh, with their Stanley Cup Victory (”Titletown, USA”?), a couple of people have pointed that the actual cup may not be the “true” trophy. Eric Buzard noticed last night that the base of the Stanely Cup was markedly different from years past. Last night, the Pens paraded with a Stanley Cup that had the Hockey Hall of Fame logo on the bottom. To his knowledge, this is the first time that’s happened. It’s been well noted that there are 2 Stanley Cups: one that’s “the” Cup & the other that takes its place in the HHOF when “the” Cup is traveling. Buzz asks, “So, were the Pens skating around with the “dummy” Cup last night? Or did the league have the base of “the” Cup changed? Either way, I’m not a fan of it!”

Who had their Captain get picked off by a snip…errr tapped on the back of the foot?
Who had their Captain slash someone after his team got beat?
Who’s Captain all but skipped the handshake line after they won?
Who had to be given a phantom powerplay to get them back in the series?
Who didn’t have enough fans 4 years ago to even support a team?
Who says FTW on their own post?

Hey, if we weren’t responsible for their successes, then we weren’t responsible for their failures, so let’s not lecture.
With all due respect, I think you didn’t as much win game 5 as the Pens lost game 5 by being so undisciplined.
Then the Pens didn’t win Games Six and Seven so much as the Wings lost them. Cuts both ways.
Yet it wasn’t enough and Abdelkader was certainly capable of scoring multiple goals in one game as we all saw.
You must have been watching the AHL, because he’s never scored more than one goal in an NHL game.
Actually, there were a number of comments about Pittburghers and our city that were equally as disgusting…I just didn’t quote everything.
Then quote ‘em, jackass—your “I saw it” doesn’t say anything. As for the Vladdie comments, they were over at the Pensblog: “Everyone in Detroit was standing, except this guy:” followed by a photograph of him in his wheelchair. Among others. But hey, those aren’t REAL loyal Pens fans, right, because you decided they’re not?
By the way…...only a cyber-punk threatens someone from behind the safety of a computer screen.

Who started a dynasty?
Who saw their dynasty crash and burn?
To the first question, no one has “started” a dynasty yet. Two good seasons does not a dynasty make.
To the second question, no one has seen their dynasty crash and burn. A SCF loss does not a crash and burn make.
These things take a lot more time than you seem to recognize. Detroit has spent almost two decades forming their dynasty. Pittsburgh was on the ropes in 2004, and was nearly sold off to Balsillie. If the league hadn’t stepped in, they could be the Hamilton Penguins right now.

Eric Buzard noticed last night that the base of the Stanely Cup was markedly different from years past. Last night, the Pens paraded with a Stanley Cup that had the Hockey Hall of Fame logo on the bottom.
The Cup with the HHOF seal on the bottom is the official presentation cup. The Cup with no seal is the display cup, used only at the Hall of Fame when the presentation cup is travelling. The original cup is permanently enshrined at the Hall.

Embrace the Dark Side fully. Look in your heart, you know it to be true. And the beer’s better too.
I want to move back home first.
Home is South Detroit.
(Really, I’m from Wyandotte.)
The Pizza is better, too.

You Pens fans cry when we say that officiating had something to do with the series because we’re not giving you respect and then you say we didn’t actually win Game 5, it was given to us.
That’s it, all gloves are off, and before you start crying, remember, you asked for it with that asinine comment.
LOL…..sorry, but again you folks misconstrue what’s being said.
I NEVER blamed the officiating in ANY of the games of this series. In fact, I made a point to say the PENS played very undisciplined (which is totally out of character for them). Your own quote of my words clearly state that. I openly admit that they went all Flyers in game 5 and deserved the penalties they received.
They didn’t play disciplined and allowed that to take them out of their style of play.
By playing that way, they GAVE the game away.
That’s not blaming the officiating at all.

The Wrong Cup?
Too good to be true. And I certainly hope it is true. Douche Bouche raised the Tourist Cup.

Hello ALL
I am a Pens Fan wait wait wait First I want to tell you all congrats on a great series well played on all sides .
I am here to ask the opinion of the 19 on Jordan Staal . over the course of this season there were Chants of Trade Staal (not from me ) which I really think were unfair the kid is only 20 yrs old and his size he has the makings to be one of the best defensive forwards in the game ? I think his play in the playoffs was great going out against the other teams top lines and shutting them down for the most part .
any thoughts

Jeebus AJ, can you read? I never said you blamed the officials. I said you guys cry when WE mention the officials because we aren’t giving the Pens credit, yet you are allowed to give us no credit by saying you gave us Game 5.
Seriously, can ANY Pens fans follow a sentence?

but I did hear the crowd at JLA applauding a Penguin getting injured….. which doesn’t strike me as being too awfully classy.
You may be confusing the applause for a good check with applause for an injury.
Fans that know their hockey, routinely applaud a good check.
That happens a lot in Detroit.

Who started a dynasty?
Talk to me in ten years.
Who saw their dynasty crash and burn?
Again, talk to me in ten years.
Prognostications get you nowhere.
I say we make Detroit part of Canada..we don’t need that shitty city.
AJ, case in point.

This is from the NHL website:
There is only one Stanley Cup—authenticated by the seal of the Hockey Hall of Fame in the bottom of the Cup; this seal can be seen when winning players lift the Cup over their heads
If you look closely at images from previous years, you can see the seal. It’s hard to see but it is there.

Cyber-punk? Are you even aware what the term actually means?
I’m QUITE sure and I’m quite sure you know exactly what I meant too.
Oh, and I’m not the one threatening anyone like some beer-muscled street punk. That’s all coming from YOUR side.
there are several of us who love to give you the opportunity to talk sh*t to our faces
GROW UP...you’re not as intimidating as you imagine yourself to be with your little testosterone filled tirade.
If you actually think “Pens” exudes a level of maturity you’re proud of, then I might get arrested for child abuse if we ever met face to face.

@ M71 -
Recently, there has been some talk on a few Edmonton Oilers boards about how they could manage to trade for Jordan Staal, because they figured that he was stuck between a couple excellent centers, his contract was quite high for someone who was basically being used as a checker, and it would give the Penguins some salary cap space and (depending on which players or prospects went back) someone to play with Crosby.
After this playoffs, they figure Staal is staying and it is more likely that the Penguins will move Kunitz along, as he has a comparable salary and did less than Staal.
From a personal standpoint, I hate - HATE - when people call for a young player’s head or want him traded. It’s as though they figure that once someone hits 22 years old he will never get any better, so dump him now before everyone catches on to how useless he is! Every player matures at a different rate. Some guys peak at 23 years old and never get any better for the rest of their careers, some guys bounce around until their late 20’s and then finally put it together.
I think Pittsburgh is a better team if they manage to hang onto Jordan Staal.

Well I’m outta here. It really isn’t worth discussing with a “fanbase” that couldn’t even support a team 4 years ago and almost lost it, and now are all of a sudden all righteous. Talk about bandwagon jumpers. You guys don’t even deserve to have a team in Pittsburgh, let along a winning one. All the “fans” bailed during the lean years, then when you get #1 picks because you suck so much, you are all of a sudden “diehards.” Gimme a break.

“Looking at the “big picture” from another perspective: Since 1971:
-3 Stanley Cups
-3 World Series
-6 Super Bowls
-1 NCAA Football National Championship (3, if you include Penn State) “
Looking at the obvious part of the picture, YOU had absolutly nothing to do with any of the above.
My guess is you weren’t even born when most of the above occurred.
So go back to your bong in your parents basement, and continue to dream you matter.
