Sunday Numbers: East vs. West and Howard vs. Thomas, Quick, Miller And Andie

Man, if it weren’t for statistics my life would suck so frigging bad. I just love me some numbers, especially when I can twist and mold them to my advantage.  Typically what I’ll do is come up with a viewpoint, then assign some stats to it to confirm my stance, and then…oops.  Wrong blog.

Numbers.  Want some? Check this out.

I actually decided to care about some teams other than the Wings today, or pretended to.  We like to claim the West is such a behemoth, so obviously stronger than the East.  And sometimes the folks in Boston or Buffalo or DC or Jersey? Sometimes that makes them sad, like I’m lying or something.

Well I’m not.

Top 8 in the West against the Eastern Conference?  55-15-4
Top 8 in the East against the Western Conference?  36-32-7

I like the number 2.  I used it yesterday as a baseline number of games in which Wing starter Jim Howard allowed two goals, compared to the number of times Wing backup Chris Osgood did the same…let in two goals or more.

Howard, as of last night, has kept the opposition to two or fewer 17 out of 25 games.  Osgood had done it in half his starts, 9/18.  Howard’s done it 4 straight games, and the Wings have gone 3-0-1.  During that span? .960 save percentage. That’s just an FYI.  Back to the number 2 and comparing it to a few other goalies of note.

Tim Thomas: 15 games allowing 2 goals or less.
Ryan Miller: 25/34 games with 2 or less. That’s frigging sick.
Jonathan Quick: 17/38 games with 2 or less.  Better than I expected.

Thomas: 25 games, 2.36, .920
Miller: 34 games, 2.08, .932
Quick: 38 games, 2.57, .905
Howard: 25 games, 2.20, .923

The Phoenix broadcasters pulled up some GAA numbers last night dated back to like 25 November.  Howard’s is disgusting. Like 1.25 or something, I don’t remember. I do remember who wasn’t in front of him…any of the three Americans above.

Let’s stay with 25 November for a minute.  Howard’s save percentage since then? .955

That’s over 15 games.  Over that span, since the 25th?  Quick’s at .919 and I’m not looking for Miller’s or Thomas’.  Burke admitted choosing the third goalie was his toughest call, but you know who all the smart kids are saying should have been Quick’s stiffest competition?  Andie in Denver.

ESPN

Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles Kings
Burnside: Although he won’t likely see any action, Quick is full value for his selection to this team, as Burke believed he had been more consistent than Colorado netminder Craig Anderson.

Maybe Quick was more consistent than Denver’s little Andie.  But neither has been as good, as clutch or as consistent as Jim Howard.

Anderson’s got 16 games with two goals or less.  8 times he’s done it his last twenty games.  Howard: 13 for his last twenty.

Eight out of Howard’s last ten starts? Two goals or less.

Four out of ten for Anderson.

A bit more between those two:

Howard: 25 games, 2.20, .923
Anderson: 36 games, 2.68, .916

Since 25 November?  Anderson has a save percentage of .905

As a reminder, Jim Howard’s since then is .955

No way he’d see a minute of ice time in Vancouver. Not a chance with Miller and Thomas in front of him.  But Jimmah deserved that 3 spot.  The numbers never lie bitch.  Well…sometimes, but not today.
