Take The Money And Run Away Mike

You’re 40.  You’ve been tossed aside by a mediocre team losing money by the buttload.  You’ve got, maybe, one year left and a few options to consider.  The Detroit Red Wings come calling and offer you a million bucks along with a damn good shot at a Cup.  You say all the right things and the wheels start to turn.  You run your mouth a few times, talk about legacy and the importance of one more run.

But when it all comes down to it…

It’s about the money. It’s always about the money.

That’s McCosky and he’s probably hit the mark.

Run to the cash Mike.  Head out to San Jose or make it a little closer to home in Disney.  Or, hell, go “home” to Minnesota where the money will be even better, maybe by a million or more.  Because, Mike, we know you need it.  We know that when it comes right down to it, it’s gotta be the cash.

Maybe we’re wrong Mike.  Maybe you’re still hashing this out with Willa, or whatever her name is.  We could be wrong about the growing perception that you’re not really “about winning.”  Maybe you’re not the fit we thought you’d be in Detroit because it’s looking like the whole “character in the room” thing isn’t really your bag.  Red Wings take less to play in Detroit, Mike.  They sacrifice because the chances at a legacy are so much greater than anywhere else.

If the money were right, Mike Modano would have already signed a one-year deal with the Red Wings. The money, obviously, isn’t right. But the money isn’t going to change.

“We made an offer, we made our pitch,” Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said on Monday. “But this being a cap world, we’ve made lots of commitments. We don’t have a lot of wiggle room.”

Screw it Kenny.  Don’t cave and don’t kiss this guy’s ass.  We owned him for nearly two decades and it’s best that we remember him for what he is, Detroit’s bitch.  Have fun in the sun Mike.  Winning’s not the thing.  Money is and Detroit’s not the place for that kind of priority.

Is it October yet?

As I said in another post a few days ago….  we don’t need drama in Detroit, we need commitment.  If MikeyMo can’t commit to a winning tradition?  That says everything we need to know about him.

The guy’s had a long and storied career, and earned the right to take time to decide if he wants to continue playing, and if so, who he wants to play for.  And if the management and fans of any particular team want to wait for him and are happy doing so in the thought that he might play for them, great and more power to them.

That being said, screw him.  What he never earned was the right to run his mouth fast and loose in the media.  I was against signing him at the beginning and I’m against it even more now.  Maybe it would have been nice, but we never actually needed him, and we needed this drama even less.  So let him go, we’re not getting him, we’ve got a season to get ready for.

Besides, with these kinds of character issues, he’d be a perfect fit in San Jose.

When this whole drama with Mike started, I have to admit, I was stoked.  I always thought of Mike as a stand up sort of guy, with amazing skills, a great work ethic and a “committment to winning” (sorry for the cliche).  As this drags out, I find myself more and more disappointed.  Becaue Mike won’t be coming to the D and centering the third line?  A little…..  Mostly it’s because it has painted Mike in a new light.  A man who talks out of both sides of his mouth, a man whose commitment to winning (there’s that cliche again) isn’t that deep, a man who will string along one of the most respected sports franchises of all times so that he can leverage their offer into a bigger payday.  It’s sickening, it’s depressing, it’s downright apalling.  I hope to god I’m wrong, because I want to remember the amazing Michigan-born NHL wonder that amazed us on the ice for damn near 2 decades, not a deceptive money-grabber who will likely spend the last year of his career in anonymity playing for another team with no realistic shot at the cup.

So, Mike…prove that this was all just some soul-searcing, and sorting out your personal shyte.  I’m not ready to abandon hope yet, but…dammit Mike….make the right choice and do it in a reasonable time frame.  The Wings have business to handle and you don’t want your legacy tarnished with an ending like this.

He’d also have more uniform numbers to choose from…I don’t think #9 is retired there—hell I don’t think they’ve retired ANY numbers ...yes sir, tradition and winning…though they do have a President’s Trophy banner hanging in the rafters of the Shart Tank by god!—of course it only serves to remind everyone of yet another epic postseason choke!!!

Yeah go play there.  Whatever.

He may have been sincere about his Detroit or retire comment. But that was before the rest of the West decided to mirror our moves and throw more money at him too. More money and easier on the homefront? (Although, I’m not sure why you need to be in California for a soft-porn career).

Double pressure. More money from his contract, more money with Willa’s dancing career and no forced abstinence.

I don’t think it’s specifically the money. I think he’s still trying to talk himself into going through another season when he doesn’t have to.

He’s trying to convince himself NOT to take the easier path and retire. I think that shows more which way he is leaning than any words do. So far none of the offers have felt like the hassle would be worth it.

Speaking of wanting to make money, noted sage Rod Blagojevich wisely said of something else, but could equally be used to refer to an opportunity to sign with the Wings:

“[We’ve] got this thing and it’s f*cking golden, and, uh, uh, [we’re] just not giving it up for f*ckin’ nothing.  [We’re] not gonna do it.  And, and [we] can always use it.  [We] can parachute [us] there.”

Don’t forget that this is a business to these guys. It’s easy for us to say that he should take less cash to have a shot at the Cup, but there’s no way any of us (myself damn well included) would take a job that pays half as much as a nearly identical position closer to home (or Willa, in this case). He might have lots of money now, but there’s no promise he won’t blow it all on fire trucks and hookers in the next 5 years.

but there’s no way any of us (myself damn well included) would take a job that pays half as much as a nearly identical position closer to home (or Willa, in this case)

That’s because at the end of the year at my job, the best I can hope for is a cheap bottle of scotch and a pat on the back for helping the business do better than they did the previous year.  If I could still live way above comfortably on half my salary (I can’t) and the payoff was a chance that I’d be recognized everywhere as one of the best people to do my job in the entire world, my priorities may be different.

Mike doesn’t owe Detroit a hometown discount, but in the crazy accounting of the NHL world, a player basically does “pay” for the opportunity to be with a winner in taking less salary than the mysterious and vague “open market” offers.  That said, depending on how much more San Jose offers, that’s almost a no-brainer.  Nowadays “open market” means “shitty teams”, since I can’t wait to see who the Islanders overpay to reach the cap floor.  Awesome job on that CBA, Gary.  We went from keeping teams that can afford it from overpaying guys to forcing teams that can’t afford it to overpay guys.

Still, he said “Detroit or retire” and is now weighing his option with God knows how many teams.  Mike Modano is now in my mind the hockey version of Brett Favre.  I’m tired of that shit and I don’t care anymore where he goes, but I don’t want it to be my team.

We can hate on San Jose all we want but at the end of the day he’d be deciding between our favourite team and the team that beat us in the playoffs last year.

Still, he said “Detroit or retire” and is now weighing his option with God knows how many teams.

To be fair, he said “Detroit or retire” when it looked like Detroit was the only team interested in him.

I don’t hold it against him that he’s waffling, but it just gives me more and more reasons to not want him on Detroit.

I know it’s probably not that apt a comparison, because there’s a huge difference between making $1M or less and making $7.4M, but when we sign a high-profile free agent I want it to be like when we signed Hossa.  Holland called up his agent and said “we like your guy, we’d like to have him on the team, but we can only give him one year and we can only give him this much” and he signed the day we gave him the offer.  I want someone who actively WANTS to be on the team.

I’m selfish, I know.

Modano is going to be a bit like Hull in his last few years. He’s not going to skate his ass off every game, he’s not going to hussle to back check every shift, but if some puts the puck on his tape he’s going to let it rip, and there’s still plenty of juice left in his shot. In the end, isn’t that what the Wings need? Wouldn’t this make the Wings power play absolutely deadly? The circus on the first power play, followed by Hudler, Modano, Fil? Modano adds a little scoring depth to the Wings, and for a team that relied a much too much on Z and Dats last year, it could really help.

I have to say, I never cared about Modano. He was our bitch, he played for ateam I did not hate. I kinda respected him for being the leading scorer among Americans, but I can’t take it too seriously.

So, by stating all he stated, “Detroit or retire”, going to Comerica Park, and the Wings courting him like that (lots of stories on the official site, contacting old coaches), he made me care about him. If he goes to another team, I’ll be pissed off, because he gave reasons to. I don’t exactly want him on the team, but I’m not comfortable with the way things are going now.

And sure, he said “Detroit or retire” before anyone else contacted him, but a guy like him should know that the market is open ‘til very late in the offseason (Kovalchuk is unsigned, for fuchs sake), so he could very well keep saying that the decision was between playing or not, instead of dragging the Wings into this.

Not exactly selfish.  I don’t think Kenny or Uncle Mike really want somebody who doesn’t actively WANT to be on the team either.

If he ‘settles’ for the Wings because he couldn’t get a deal done with his first-choice, whomever that may be, then he isn’t worth having on the team.  Attitude like that belongs elsewhere.

Wouldn’t this make the Wings power play absolutely deadly?

Um, no?

but a guy like him should know that the market is open ‘til very late in the offseason

Fair enough, but for a 40-year old guy who’s considering retirement, he’s probably not going to wait till October to decide if he’s going to play.  If Detroit didn’t contact him, I’d bet there was a good chance he’d already have announced his retirement at this point.

Kovalchuk’s not signed, but there were 30 teams in the league that would’ve like to sign him and there have been multiple suitors since July 1st.  Not exactly the same as “Should I retire or should I uproot my entire life for one year with a new team, the only team that’s shown interest in me?”

We’re loaded with centers, we don’t NEED him.  It’d make us better I think and could definately help, if he’d have stood by his words.  Now he’s whoring himself and don’t give me the shit about it’s a business, he should be lucky a team like detroit was willing to make room for him.  We have Franzen, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Holmstrom… he’s a 3rd line guy, which also has Happy and Bear on it, he should be so lucky.  So obviously it’s dollars and cents to him, not winning Lord Stanley’s.  Detroit doesn’t need that in our locker room.

Give Abby his minutes to allow him to develop. He’s had a career of exceeding expectations and he’s got an upside that’s untapped, like Franzen in his first two years.  This kid will break out.  Let him and let Choppers chase his cash out in Cali, it’ll make shakin’ his hand on our way to the Finals all the more sweeter.

Yeah, if we’re bringing Modano in to play 3rd line I’m not sure he’s going to be on the power play unless, as someone has said previously, he plays the point.  But he’s not a right handed shot and Babcock likes his forwards who play the point on the PP to be righties.

I’m really not sure I’d count this as stringing anyone along. It’s been a couple of weeks. We all knew that he wanted to weigh his options, and that he was heavily considering retirement. Just because McCosky (who, lets face it, has been a dipshit hack for the better part of his career) says it’s about the money, doesn’t mean that it is.

Maybe. Maybe he’ll decide to play in SJ and he’ll do so for the money, or so he can be closer to home. Then we can start the tirades. But for now, we have no idea what’s running through his head. Neither does McCosky.

I can’t imagine that for a guy who’s made the amount of bank that Mikey Mo has over his career, a difference of a few hundred thousand dollars is going to be the dealbreaker. He likely wants a role that isn’t just a fourth line center / press room “character guy.” It looks like Detroit can give him that. But really… so can SJ and shit, he’d be a top 6 guy for the Wild.

I still think in the end it’ll be Detroit or retire. He may be leaning much more heavily toward retire now, but he’d be a helluva part of #12.

Well (and I’m not trying to directly compare the two) Alexei Yashin got an enormous payday when he was bought out by the Isles, but when other teams came looking to sign him to a bargain salary because of it, he balked, still trying to get full “value” out of anything he signed.  Consequently, he’s no longer playing in North America.

And, who knows what the difference really is between the offers?  I’ve heard as low as $800K from Detroit and, let’s face it, the Wild, Sharks and (as I’ve also read…somewhere) Ducks can all offer more than that.  If he was to sign with Detroit to play on the third line would he be out of line to expect something akin to what Detroit’s current third-liners Hudler and Cleary are making?  If Detroit’s offer IS $800K and San Jose offers even $1.5M along with the chance to be closer to his ball and chain, how do you NOT accept that?

What I’m saying is, please San Jose, offer Mike Modano $1.5M and the chance to be closer to his ball and chain.  Please.

Yeah, if somebody said he’s like Phil Housely when the puck’s on his stick, that’s high praise indeed.  I just think like Housely he’ll probably have to spend a large part of his career playing forward if he wants to make an impact.  But realistically, neither of them were expected to compete for spots with the Wings.  Brendan Smith probably still can, it looks like he’ll be ready for camp, if a bit out of condition in his upper-body—but he’s still probably GR-bound as he’s waiver-free.  Marshall, who knows, probably won’t be at camp, but really the only loss right now is to the Omaha Lancers.

Still gotta wonder if Mikey Mo will be at camp.

As I wrote elsewhere when this all first started to happen, I was ready to change his nickname to Mikey Motown.  In retrospect however you might recall that even Motown Records eventually ditched Detroit and went Hollywood, so maybe it was more apropos than I initially suspected.  But then again, maybe not.  Who knows?  Only time will tell.

For Detroit sports fans (and many of us have our own stories as to how and why we ended up scattered about the country), there is a strong thread of loyalty.  Since my own family left Michigan I’ve lived in Nashville, Phoenix, NorCal and finally Portland.  Trust me I have no love or loyalty for the Preds, the Coyotes or any of the California teams.  None.  Nada.  Niente.  Zilch.  Hell, there is a successful WHL major-junior team here locally and, though I will go to the games from time to time, I will never wear any of their gear because their logo at their colors are an exact replica of the Blackhawks.

But that’s us – fans.  Loyal, true blue, dyed in the wool Dee-troit sports fans.  Hell if they flew us in, took us to a Tigers game, wined and dined us and offered any of us a million dollars to be Detroit Red Wing, we would have felt as though we had died and gone to Heaven.  But that’s us.  We’re not married to a soft-core porn star and divorced from our roots.  And while we’re on the topic I have it on good authority that there is indeed top shelf porn being cranked out on a more or less daily basis in a basement in Warren out near the Chrysler truck plant , but I digress.

Strictly from a hockey point of view, no one else can offer what Detroit can.  True, he could be a top six guy in Minnesota but would have no shot at winning.  He would upgrade the third line in San Jose and might even have a shot at the cup there (I know, I know, stop the laughter!), but take a look at that roster and tell me that he would have any shot at playing on a third line with legit NHL scorers like Happy and Buckets.  He wouldn’t.

The reality of the salary cap in San Jose isn’t much different than it is in Detroit.  They already tipped their hand in going after Hjalmarsson with a $3.5 mil offer that they are intent on spending most of their cap space to upgrade the blueline.  They also have a big ticket item on their agenda in Devin the diver Setoguchi who will probably eat up another $2-3 mil if they want to lock him up long term.  They’ve also made it known that they would like to add an experienced goaltender as well.  What does that leave?  Not much (if any) more than Detroit can offer, and the third line role there would not afford the opportunity to play alongside the same skill level that Detroit would provide.  So he may still end up in red and white—assuming that is, that it’s all about hockey and it’s all about winning.  Again, only time will tell.

But we don’t have unlimited time at this point and if better options present themselves then I would have to imagine that the brain trust, having been burned by waiting for Hudler a year ago, will pursue those options.  If they can find any sort of quality defensive help to stabilize our youth and inexperience on the third pairing then grab that guy.  Hell, it might even end up being our old friend Lilja!

What about Brendan Morrison or Slava Koslov?

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
