Abel to Yzerman

Take The Money And Run Away Mike

You’re 40.  You’ve been tossed aside by a mediocre team losing money by the buttload.  You’ve got, maybe, one year left and a few options to consider.  The Detroit Red Wings come calling and offer you a million bucks along with a damn good shot at a Cup.  You say all the right things and the wheels start to turn.  You run your mouth a few times, talk about legacy and the importance of one more run.

But when it all comes down to it…

It’s about the money. It’s always about the money.

That’s McCosky and he’s probably hit the mark.

Run to the cash Mike.  Head out to San Jose or make it a little closer to home in Disney.  Or, hell, go “home” to Minnesota where the money will be even better, maybe by a million or more.  Because, Mike, we know you need it.  We know that when it comes right down to it, it’s gotta be the cash.

Maybe we’re wrong Mike.  Maybe you’re still hashing this out with Willa, or whatever her name is.  We could be wrong about the growing perception that you’re not really “about winning.”  Maybe you’re not the fit we thought you’d be in Detroit because it’s looking like the whole “character in the room” thing isn’t really your bag.  Red Wings take less to play in Detroit, Mike.  They sacrifice because the chances at a legacy are so much greater than anywhere else.

If the money were right, Mike Modano would have already signed a one-year deal with the Red Wings. The money, obviously, isn’t right. But the money isn’t going to change.

“We made an offer, we made our pitch,” Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said on Monday. “But this being a cap world, we’ve made lots of commitments. We don’t have a lot of wiggle room.”

Screw it Kenny.  Don’t cave and don’t kiss this guy’s ass.  We owned him for nearly two decades and it’s best that we remember him for what he is, Detroit’s bitch.  Have fun in the sun Mike.  Winning’s not the thing.  Money is and Detroit’s not the place for that kind of priority.

Is it October yet?

Hey at least Modano isn’t Kovalchuk.

According to the Emperor’s front page, he apparently once again (as in for the third time now) killled off a chance to go to the Kings because he keeps going all J.G. Wentworth and screaming “It’s my money, and I need it NOW!”.

Because I’m sure they were low-balling Ilya with a paltry 8m/yr or something…

This ModanoWatch sucks.  It’s sucked from the very start.  He should be on his hands and knees, groveling to the Wings to please please PLEASE let him on for even just one season.

Since he isn’t, he can go to hell and he doesn’t deserve to wear the wing or the red and white.  Ever..

Oh god, please tell me Kenny has a better backup plan than this….  I like Maltby personally and he’s been an awesome Wing, but his legs have given out on him and it’s time to move on to someone younger…

would be a shame if he went to the KHL,not really,if he doesnt play for the RW I dont care,it’s better not to have him playing in the WC

I really hope NHL loses Ilya, that will put the caphit in a good perspective. I for one thinks Ilya wants to have a shot at the cup. Not likely in LA…..

So good luck in the KHL Ilya.

MO would be great on a third line, if he wants to have a shot at winning at home. But we will not die without him.

Fantastic look / listen of Jiri Fischer “in action”.

Really, really good stuff. Super job in ‘player development’.
(This is the Red Wing way of treating players as people.
Hockey can be more than just a business.
Jiri still in the Red Wing organ-I-zation in an important role is proof.)

Positioning is everything.  Take these two sentences for instance:

I helped my uncle Jack, off a horse.

I helped my uncle jack off a horse.

Little bit different meaning.  Man, punctuation is important.

As far as Modano is concerned I really doubt the money has much to do with it.  Over the course of his career he has made lots and lots of cash.  Since the 89/90 season he has made $74,587,650.  What difference could a few hundred thousand be.  I think he’s just taking his time deciding.  He doesn’t seem to be making a big deal about it.  Not like Lebron or Ilya.  Although I have to admit, the fact that he is having meetings with these other teams after he basically said Detroit or nothing, it unsettling.  But maybe he didn’t know about the other teams interest in him?  I guess when it comes down to it I really don’t care if he’s signed or not at this point.  I’d just like to know before too long what the hell is going on.

Who else read Jamie Samuelsen’s take on hockey fights? Good writing, and good Bettman bashing.

The czar (I think I’m referring to myself in the third person now) would bring Gary Bettman into my office in Washington, D.C. I’d sit him down (oh, he’s already sitting? Whoops.). And I’d say, “Gary, You had your shot. You tried to take your sport mainstream. You put teams in Nashville, Miami, Phoenix and Raleigh. You tried your best. And guess what. The people just didn’t quite buy in. You have fans out there. You have lots of fans. They’re die-hards. They love hockey, and they love the NHL. But they love the way the NHL USED to be. They don’t love it now. Instead of building a new fan base of non-hockey fans, you’ve actually gone a long way to alienate your core fans. Sorry Gary. Good try. But it’s time for the czar to step in.”

Twitterverse is reporting Derek Meech has signed to a 1 year, $500K contract.

Make of that what you will, but I don’t think we’re going after another veteran defenseman until much later in the offseason if at all.

Maltby, the longtime Red Wing, is seeking a one-way contract on the open market. If he doesn’t get it, the Red Wings will offer him a one-year, two-way contract (lower salary in the AHL).

Word is he’ll retire if he can’t earn his spot during training camp.

The Red Wings aren’t going to pay him $1.5 million, but if he remains unsigned later this summer and is willing to accept $1 million or less, Lilja still could return to Detroit.

I have no idea if he’d take a paycut, but if no one else tries anything, might be his only chance to get a last contract.

The Red Wings have offered Modano a one-year deal for $1.25 million and aren’t likely to increase that offer because they’re tight on salary-cap space, still needing to sign restricted free-agent forwards Darren Helm and Justin Abdelkader.

Make your wife happy, Mo (yes, I don’t want you now).

Via capgeek: Derek Meech signed a one-year contract, 500k.

I kinda sorta trust Capgeek, and I have no idea if Meech will actually be on the team, maybe he’ll be traded before the season.

Tick-Tock mentioned that very sentiment in an interview a few days ago.  Unless the numbers were right (cap wise), he was confident with the group he has to sort it out in camp.  One of the FA defensemen (McKee, Ward, Mara etc.) should be available come training camp time.

Interesting that the RFA numbers are coming back cheaper than I thought they would.  If Kenny gets Helm and Abby at the number I was originally thinking, he could sit pat and have a cushion for injuries as well as a nice pick up at the trade deadline

I doubt any other team offers him a contract. The only question is whether he makes the team out of camp. As much as I love Malts, I think its time for him to hang them up and put on a suit.

Damn Deuce, sorry to hear about the ugly incident with your Uncle Jack and the horse…and yes an old fashioned BC two hander beats a composite stick every time…Holy Jumpin! it’s sort of hockey’s version of paper, rock, scissors…

re: Maltby, if you haven’t done so recently, step into the time machine, go back and watch the ‘02 finals…Kirk Maltby was a muthafazuckin’ stud in that series…then take a few minutes, reflect on how he and Draper were for so great for so damn long on the PK; how they were not only great at killing penalties but were a constant threat to score themselves…then take a few minutes more and think about how awesome he was on the Grind Line…

and so we pay our respects and appreciate what a great legacy this guy has in Detroit…because frankly I don’t see much of a role for him on a team that may have as many as fifteen forwards on the roster.

Dumb questions, are we stuck with Drapes salary this year or is there a way to dump it, if he retires it still counts against our cap hit being 35+ right? I love the guy but since the face off rule has changed I really don’t see his value, especially for 1.5 mill. Write him a nice eulogy like Malts and lets wash our hands.
