Ten

Yep, it’s been ten years since Igor Larionov—of all people—started the brawl at the Joe.  Ten years since Aaron Ward earned his stripes, Brendan Shanahan truly became a Wing and Mike Vernon won his 300th.  Oh, you’d forgotten the OTHER miletone that night, eh?

“Everyone expected (the brawl) to happen, and how we got there wasn’t good, but it was an accumulation of a lot of games,” Chris Osgood said. “It was probably more fun for the fans (than players). But it was kind of necessary. It was probably one of the last steps for us to take, to come together as a team and the fact we stood up for each other, going into the playoffs.”

The buildup heading into the game, and the war of words between the teams, led everyone to believe something memorable was going to happen.

“There was hatred between the teams,” Osgood said.

Good stuff from Kulfan. Read more here.

Back in those days, I used to write for a hockey website called “In the Crease”, and scored my first press pass for that game. I’ve posted the original article over at my blog...

Thanks for the link, Forechecker.  I remember “In the Crease”, it used to be my favorite hockey website.

Wow, 10 years.  I remember that game.  They showed it on tape delay here in Denver, I was trying to hold out but I ended up cheating and flipping over to ESPN2 to see the final score and then I could relax and enjoy the rest of the game.

Anyone have a copy of the game or a download link? I’d love to show my nephew that game!

I found a couple of torrents, but nobody is seeding…

Thanks

Well, I had to share this. This morning, I was listening to am950 the Fan here in Denver.  They had Mike Haynes (he used to be the radio play-by-play announcer for the Diques, now he does tv play-by-play for them) on and they started talking about 03/26/97.  Haynes called McCarty’s move on Fraude LePuke, “the most disgusting move I have ever seen in hockey!”  I had to laugh.  Worse than Bertuzzi on Moore?  Simon’s high stick?  Then he went on to contend that Roy beat up Mike Vernon.  I was just laughing so hard to myself in the car.  Oh really?  Funny how that game still stokes the fires of the mostly dead rivalry.
