Ten Years Later

Can you believe it’s been a decade since Chris Osgood let in the MacInnis goal, followed by the Langenbrunner bomb?  He was 25 years old and heading into Game 6 against Dallas, in Dallas, the Stress Train was rockin’.  A 2-0 shutout shut a lot of people up.  Mike Heika remembers.

Does he have the potential for greatness, the ability to win a game by himself the way the eccentric Czech does? Of course not. But the Wings don’t need that. They need a guy who is not going to lose them games.

Chris Osgood can do that. He has won a Stanley Cup. He’s 35. He led the NHL in goals against average this season at 2.09.

Ask the Stars if he’s good enough to win the Cup.

They know he is.

Does anyone remember the one playoff series vs the Blackhawks (I can’t remember which year) when the game was about to head into OT and the Hawks tried one of those half-assed shots from center ice before the horn sounded to end regulation?  The puck squirted past Osgood and hit the post!

Regardless, I feel much better now with Ozzie in net.  With Osgood, the goaltending can range from adequate to great, which is better than can be said for Hasek.

Not that I want to jinx anything here, I’m just sayin:  If the Wings win the Cup this year, is Ozzie a lock for the HOF?  It would certainly help his credentials.

I remember that, but I’d bet money it was Vernon not Osgood.

If Ozzie wins another Cup, the numbers don’t lie. He’s already up there with some pretty impressive names. I have no idea how the writers will feel about him though.

If he wins another Cup I’ll predict that he’ll get in eventually, but it’ll take more than one try.

Assuming Osgood is the starter for Wings next season and posts similar numbers, he will be in the top 10 all-time leaders for regular season wins, top 15 all-time for regular season shut-outs, top 16 all-time career GAA. If he wins another cup he’ll be near top 10 play-off wins all-time, currently owns spot number 11 all-time play-off shut-outs, is a 2 time winner of the William M. Jennings Trophy and has 4 All-Star appearances.

I’d say he did that on Sunday.  It’s not like Nashville didn’t get any quality chances.  Osgood shut the door, completely.

Don’t think for one minute that you have seen the last of Dominik Hasek in net for the Wings in this postseason.

Just sayin’.

And it won’t be an Osgood injury, either.

We’ve seen Hasek play his last minutes as a Red Wing, barring catastrophic injury to Ozzie.

He’s done, and won’t be back.

Chris Osgood. “There can be only one.” I will continue to call him our Silver Lining. He has proven all season that he is ready, willing, and very capable of getting the job done, when he has had the opportunity. You earn you spot on the roster. He has done that in spades. He patiently waited and has been all about the team, all season long. No ego, no wig-outs. “BRING IT ON!” Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Dub, normally, I’d be offering you a wager about now, but it might be bad playoff juju to start goalie gambling,eh? It would be a bet I would love to lose, because it would mean the Wings had no more goalie issues this postseason. I could deal with that.Really, I could.

Philly is chokin’ like dogs tonight, ya gotta love it!!

You would be correct. It was Vernon, and we were about to win after stifling the Hawks all game. Tony Amonte took the shot, Vernie had already begun coming out to celebrate and the puck hopped, skipped, then hit the post with .3 seconds left. Weird.

I think that was our first cup, or it was year that we lost to the Devils in the finals.

95-96 we lost to the devils—-had nothing left after the Chicago Conf. finals.  Vernons first year qs q Wing…
traded Steve Chaison for him.(I am sure tha is spelled wrong).

Ah, I stand corrected, it was Vernon.  Now let me do the correcting…the Devils swept us in 1994-95 (strike-shortened season), and I think it’s spelled “Chaisson”
