The Modanos talk about hockey and long-distance romance

I’m not naming names, but somebody passed this one on to me and so I have to post it. Mike and Mandy (a.k.a. Willa Ford) Modano spoke to Ambassador magazine’s Rebecca Wall about their relationship in a Valentine’s Day-themed issue, but Mr. Modano also spoke about playing for the Red Wings and his recovery from surgery to repair three torn flexor tendons and nerve damage in his right wrist:
Question: Mike, aside from your recent wrist injury, which sounds horrible, how did you think your season with the Red Wings was going?
Mike Modano: I was really starting to feel comfortable here with the Wings and physically felt the best I have in a long time. But so far the guys have been great, and the fans here have been really receptive and supportive.
Question: Mike, how is eating left-handed going?
Modano: Eating left handed has been brutal!! I can’t cut anything; so it’s been a lot of pasta and fish!
Given his injury-shortened season, I think that there are at least a couple of Wings fans who wouldn’t mind seeing Modano make a return engagement and play one fully healthy season for Detroit before he hangs up his skates.

No idea how much game he has left in him after that unlucky skate on wrist stabbing.
Lets see him return this season or in playoffs before even thinking about next season.
I saw very raw talent in Emmerton, Tatar and more refined in Mursak. Next season they will surely get the icetime to show what they can do so I wouldn’t worry that Mike is in the way of any them from going Steve Stamkos on goalies soon, lol.
I expect Draper and Modano to retire but who knows, looks at Selanne and Recchi still going strong.

The problem isn’t their talent, Slumpy. The problem is roster space. If Modano comes back and only Draper retires, that doesn’t leave room for both Mursak and Emmerton – and both of them are out of waivers. So they either stay and play, they get traded, or they get lost to waivers (like Quincey).

There is always the probability that the Wings do not re-sign Miller.
As a matter of fact here is all the Wings UFA’s after the completion of this season: forward: Draper, Eaves, Meech, Miller, Modano; Defense: Ericsson, Lidstrom, Salei; Goal: Howard, Macdonald, Osgood. With a couple of these guys choices will have to be made.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. Well, I wouldn’t be one of those fans, George. It’s nothing against Modano, who’s a great guy. But if he comes back next year, there may not be room for someone like Emmerton – and the Wings will end up losing another prospect before he ever has a chance to show what he can do. And we need those young guys.
Look at who, game in and game out, has played at 110% this year. It’s Helm and Abbi and Mursak and Tatar (for the brief time he was in Detroit). At some point, the Wings have to start building for the future and quit letting guys like Modano and Draper (both great guys) block the growth of the younger guys.
