MLive took a page from the Dominik Hasek book of showing your opponents some token respect. Their headline this morning reads, “Wings Looking To Clinch Title Against Lousy Blackhawks”.
And what is going on over there with the Khan(!)s? Yesterday I thought it was a misprint. Today? Not so sure. Are there two Khan(!)s? Is this some sort of Booth nepotistic charade? Who the hell is BILL Khan(!)? I’ll track it down for you, have no fear.
By Bill Khan
DETROIT—This weekend could have been as good as it gets, at least in the regular season. The Detroit Red Wings will conclude the regular season with a home-and-home series against long-time rival Chicago, visiting the Blackhawks tonight before hosting them at 1 p.m. Saturday at Joe Louis Arena.
However, this is a rivalry that fizzled out years ago, and the games are meaningful only to the Red Wings.
Bill (??) Khan(!)...and, no, if he’s a new Khan he doesn’t get the exclamation point until he proves himself worthy...spoke, apparently, with Hank and Schneider. One’s coming back tonite, the other? Not so much.
“I feel really good heading into the last two games and the playoffs,” said Schneider, who skated during an optional practice Wednesday. “I could have played (Tuesday). It’s just a matter at this point in the season of crossing your T’s and dotting your I’s. You want to make sure everyone’s ready to go (for the playoffs). To get the extra couple days where you can really relax has been nice for me.”
Zetterberg continues to practice, but said he won’t make the trip to Chicago. He’s missed 17 games with a back injury.
“I’d rather be playing in the playoffs than taking a chance playing one or two games in the regular season and not being able to play in the playoffs,” Zetterberg said. “You’ve got to be careful and you’ve got to be smart.”
Frigging Khans. Always a step ahead. Always keeping us guessing.
Helene St. James has a sidekick now, too. Some fella named Chris Lau. I see the thinking now. I got it. “It’s playoff time. Perfect opportunity to break in some new beat writers.” Makes perfect sense.
And they’ve broken the code on Babcock. If you’re a Wing, don’t pass...ever.
Coach Mike Babcock is trying to find Samuelsson ice time where possible.
“He is more than an 11- to 12-minute player,” Babcock said. “He can shoot the puck a ton; we’ve just got to convince him. He always wants to pass it.”
Not much new in the News, not at least as the rest of THIS season is concerned. But, they’ve got the exclusive on some new digs.
Speculation about the family’s plans was stoked Wednesday when the Ilitches’ Olympia Development secured state funding to raze a vacant, dilapidated building smack dab in the area long rumored to be the preferred site of the arena—a cluster of blocks west of the Fox Theatre complex, the Woodward Avenue headquarters for Ilitch Holdings Inc.
Ilitch is playing this one close to the vest...kinda. He’s apparently been letting slip the occasional hints, then pulling back when asked for confirmation. Ilitch holdings are spread all over the place...offshore, obscured by a shell here and there, maybe creatively titled to keep a certain government agency on their toes. A pasta guy. Whaddya expect?
How does it affect you, and how does it affect Detroit businesses? Don’t turn to the mayor. According to the News, long time Wing fan Kwame was “unaware of a decision” regarding the Wings’ new home.
But, hey, if you can’t get the mayor on the phone you go to the next rung in the ladder. That’s right, the owner of Harry’s Bar and Grill, official Detroit spokesman.
“It’s like a parlor game around here,” said Harry Kefalonitis, owner of Harry’s Bar & Grill, on Clifford Street across I-75 from the Fox Theatre. “I hear they’re looking at about 10 different locations back there.”
Two years ago, when Mike Ilitch ate at his bar, Kefalonitis asked him if the new hockey arena would be built nearby.
“He just smiled and looked at me,” Kefalonitis said. “But he didn’t say no. And everyone around here always thinks if he doesn’t say no, it means yes.”
Watch out Harry. Sailors have been thinking that for centuries, and it always leads to trouble.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields
"I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season."
--Mile High Hockey
"I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…"
--In The Cheap Seats
"It's just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don't deserve their team."
--Thhom
"I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think."
--Drew Sharp
"Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players? I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better."
--A2Y Fan, Jeff Beaumont
"Have you ever *read* A2Y? Its the most opinionated, juvenile stuff i've read."
