Thursday Digging: Hasek’s Your Starter

I told you.  I frigging told you. Dominik Hasek, after a very strong outing versus Montreal, will get his second straight start tomorrow night against Minnesota.  At least that’s what Uncle Mike told Khan(!).

“We knew he was going to be good,” Babcock said. “Right now we’re fortunate we got Dom going and Ozzie going, and we’ll be able to roll.”

Babcock allegedly also told his little buddy that Maltby “could play” Friday, which means he won’t.

So…Marc Crawford ordered the attack on Steve Moore.  I’m sure this thing’s going to blow up.  We’ll read the rehashes, see the sad shakes of the heads from people who just “wished this would go away.”  They’ll have points.  Despite my feelings that Crawford’s one of the worst people in hockey, I sense this will be blown out of proportion.

Do you honestly believe he directed his team, or Bertuzzi specifically, to severely injure Steve Moore?  Or did he say something like, “someone better do something about this guy”?  And,  how many times a week—or even nightly—do you think a statement like that is made by coaches in the NHL?

I kinda get the feeling Pavel Datsyuk has made a deliberate effort to toss the english around a bit more.  He’s obviously feeling more comfortable with the media.  He’s got a dry sense of humor, one that he’s finally starting to let us see more of.  His comment following the Montreal tribute to Chris Chelios on Tuesday…

“Cheli had good celebration before the game. We want to keep Cheli happy.”

For a second, I thought the Wings may actually have a comms strategy, an idea that their young stars (Datsyuk and Zetterberg) need to be marketed a bit more.  Then I realized we were talking about Detroit and figured it’s coincidence.

Whew.  For a few weeks it looked like the Deep Diggers had actually realized how lazy they look when they run nearly identical stories on the same specific topic.  There were actually, by my count, six straight days where the ambitious triad of St. James, Kulfan and Khan(!) filed stories on different subjects.

Thankfully, because we like to know what to expect from our Diggers, they’ve returned to form.

Keep pushing the edge of that envelope.  We all appreciate it.

and the finely tuned czech watch goes tick, tick, tick, tick….........

Marc Crawford ordered the hit…SURE he did.  Because if he didn’t, there is not much of a case against the team or the NHL.  Chalk this one up to lawyers looking for the “deep pocket”.  Unless they tag the team or the league with a judgment there is nobody to fund this little lawsuit. Unless you think Bertuzzi has a spare $18M around to pay it off.
