Tigers and Wings: Same Course, Same Result?

I would bet that traffic on most Wing blogs is down a bit today and I’m going to take a huge leap and guess the reason would be the biggest trade the city of Detroit has seen since the Wings opened the 1996 season with Brendan Shanahan at left wing. Interesting piece at the Sporting News that effectively compares the similar routes two Ilitch-owned teams have taken with one goal in mind.
...the similarities between the two franchises are striking. The Red Wings had a highly respected coach in Scotty Bowman, and the Tigers have a highly respected manager in Jim Leyland. Both had won championships with other teams.
Both teams failed to win championships after historic, seared-into-everybody’s-memory events. Magglio Ordonez’s walkoff homer in Game 4 of the ALCS sent the team to the World Series, but they lost. And Yzerman’s double-overtime 60-foot slapshot gave the team a 1-0, seven-game win over the Blues in 1996, but they lost the next series to Colorado.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Decent article, but I’m a little surprised that there was no mention/comparison of Develano and Dumbrowski.
Mike Ilitch’s style of ‘who is the best?’ OK, ‘go hire him’ is why we have them, why we had the Scotty, and now Leyland.
