Torres Hit Still Being Felt

Despite the grumblings from some far corners of Wing message boards, Rafi Torres’ hit on Jason Williams Wednesday was clean. Brutal, but clean. Williams had the puck…well, it had just left his stick. Torres kept his feet. Williams’ head was down. Torres drilled him. Every reaction from every Wing (players, coaches, execs) testified to that.
But, man it looked like it hurt.
Danny Markov, well known for dishing out similar exhibitions of violence, said that the hitter is often as affected as the hittee.
Detroit News/Ted Kulfan
“You want to hit people, you want a good hit, but you want to see the guy get up,” Markov said. “When something like that happens, the guy falls and there’s a lot of blood on the ice, nobody is moving, everyone is scared.
“Nobody in the league wants to hit anyone on purpose, to injury guys. It’s a physical game.”
The main reason, according to the Wings, Williams will spend a few days on the IR is the swelling on his forehead…which required 30 stitches.

Athletic trainer Piet Van Zant said Williams had a slight concussion and “significant cut on his forehead, so it’s going to take some time to heal before he’s going to want to put a helmet on.”
Again, that was a clean hit. Williams was attempting to wrap the puck in on Roloson’s short side. Torres had him lined up. The puck had just left Williams’ stick and the train arrived. For those of you still conflicted, still a little sad that such a violation could befall one of our Wings…well, I suggest you harken back 9 years or so and remember the family fun we all had watching Vladdie dish those hits out on nightly basis.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. For the record, his head was not down. He just was not looking in Torres’ direction, probably because Jason is a decent hockey player and, as such, was focused on the big defensemen who was virtually in his face. He may even have been attempting to follow up on his shot.
Regardless of the legality of the contact, Torres took advantage of Williams when he should have pulled up.
