Two Down:  Franzen For The Next Nine Or Ten

Gotta hand it to Tick Tock.  He doesn’t mess around when he gets the guys he wants. And it’s looking like another hometown discount.

TSN

Sources say the deal is believed to be a long one, upwards of nine or 10 years in order to keep the salary cap hit to a manageable level for the Red Wings.

More as we get it.

Just for fun, we’ll keep on eye on something for you.  TSN reported the signing at 10:55.  The emperor had it at 11:09, then emailed me to rub it in after he was sure it had been posted on the main page.  We ran it at 11:14.  Malik at 11:24.  And your Diggers?

Nada.

So tell me this bitches.  Nine or ten for Franzen.  Does that mean Holland’s got the leeway to sign Hossa if 81’s being reasonable about salary?

LOL!  I’m willing to be mercilessly violated by Holland - and I will like it.

Jeebus, you obvioiusly didn’t see my openly gay admission for American Idol’s Adam Lambert.  He turned me, at least until the playoffs start.

“play that funky music, white boy.”

No I didn’t. I couldn’t keep my eyes off of Nick. Also, I have met some very manley gay men in my day. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Bitches.

Khan says $3.9 million a year cap hit, with a no-trade clause for 5 or 6 years.

These long-term deals make me nervous as hell, but if these numbers are right, it’s worth the risk.  Thank you, Kenny.

And thank you, RWBill.  That picture has improved my quality of life considerably.

and Nicklas Lidstrom, right

holy crap.  Lidstrom is RIPPED.  I never would have expected that.  he just doesn’t play like a guy who needs to look like that.  maybe he should start throwing some hits.  why waste all that muscle?

If that 4 million is back-loaded a little, say 3M next year and then 5M at its peak, then maybe we’ve got a chance to keep Hossa, Huds, and Conks.  Hmmmmmmm…

I gotta say I for one am terrified about these unprecedented long-term contracts.  This style is definitely un-Kenny and I believe that this sort of stuff is going to bite us in the ass down the road.  Say Hank or Mule blows out a knee, or, pulls a Yashin/Jagr/Kipper and starts eating cream puffs for breakfast every day because they have nothing left to motivate them.  I’m happy to see mule signed but I don’t have a good feeling in the pit of my stomach about this.

Chicago needs to show that they have what it takes to play with the big dogs.

Maybe, but they’re not going to prove anything in the regular season.

Just ask the San Jose Sharks of the last five years…

Check this math out:

Currently the Wings have $51.25 committed in salary next year.  The wings could get Hossa under contract with an average cap hit of $4.54 under this deal:

Year (Age) - Annual Pay
1     (32)  - 6.5
2     (33)  - 6.5
3     (34)  - 6.5
4     (35)  - 6
5     (36)  - 6
6     (37)  - 5
7     (38)  - 5
8     (39)  - 4
9     (40)  - 2.5
10   (41)  - 1
11   (42)  - 1

If the cap stays where it is this year at $56.7, the Wings can sign him and have $55.79 committed.  That leaves $1 million in space that Tick Tock would want to keep in case he needs to make a trade at the end of the year.  Why would he want to make a trade?  because in order sign Hossa he has to let go of Hudler, Samuelson, McCarty, Conklin, and Chelios He will have to sign Leino and Kopecky, though.  Can he make that $1 million stretch far enough to cover all of the two way players he is going to have to call up all the time to fill roster slots.

If the cap rises or Hossa agrees to terms of less than what I laid out, the Wings will definitely sign him.  I wouldn’t expect to see any signing until the new cap figures come out in July though, so it will be a long summer.
