Two More Years For Lidstrom

Whoa.  This one came out of nowhere, as Holland’s moves typically do.  Nick Lidstrom has extended for two more years.

Khan(!)

The Wings just announced they have signed defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom to a two-year extension that runs through 2009-10. Lidstrom was in the final year of his contract, earning $7.6 million.

“Nick has been the best defenseman in the world for several years”, Holland said in a statement. “He’s a great captain and role model who does everything right both on and off the ice. We’re proud to have him continue as a Red Wing for another two years.”

No indication as to whether the money is for more than the 7.6 he’s currently making…

More from TSN. No word on salary.

Khan is currently claiming that it’ll be a slight pay cut. Hopefully we’re looking at something like 7.2 or lower so as to provide the money for at least one (of many) players’ deserved raises.

This means Kenny will be sticking around for a couple more as well… right?

This is good news, people. Good news.

Red Wings Jeopardy:

What is “one of the easiest contract decisions for Ken Holland, ever” Alex?

No doubt, Baroque. It makes it even easier if Khan is correct and Nick decides he’d be happy taking a little dip in salary to benefit the rest of the club.

Praise Jesus!!!  And yes, it does indeed look like Boy Wonder will be staying at least two more years.

Nick is the MAN!!!  Hell, he even takes a pay cut to stay with the Winged Wheel!!  How’s that for leadership by example.  Wonder if Hank is paying attention to that fact.

Spector noted in his blog earlier today that he did’nt think Nick had any desire to play anywhere else—hit that nail squarely on the head—as usual.

Got a christmas present the day after—what a deal!!!  WooHoo!!!  Now if the Wings take the Blues to the woodshed tonite it will have made for a terrific day!!!

An excellent signing by the Wings.  It’s nice to see that he took a bit of a cut if it meant helping the team to remain competitive for years to come.

Zetterberg’s contract ends in 2009.  Here’s hoping the Wings brass signs him to a long-term contract similar to Datsyuk’s.

Congrats to THE best defenseman in the world.
