Edit: Banner will be back up there some time tomorrow.
First, hope you’re all enjoying the third iteration of the Empire…this time complete with a whole slew of quality bloggers. What a concept. First-rate writers representing a number of teams, blogging consistently. And you don’t even have to pay for it, not even the trade rumors.
Fan of Uncle Mike? Of course you are. Why?
Here:
“You know what I did because everyone kept telling me it was a short summer?” Babcock told ESPN.com. “I said, ‘OK, let’s do the math.’ I said to [assistant coach] Paul [MacLean], ‘How many days did we have off last year?’ He said, ‘113.’ ‘How many this year?’ ‘106.’ ‘OK, then, don’t anyone tell me it was such a shorter summer.’ We had seven fewer days. Who cares. So let’s gas that thing right away so we don’t have to hear about that anymore.”
Exactly. Hangovers and short layoffs are for losers. As a matter of fact, I put it better a few weeks ago.
Hangovers are for one-trick ponies without leadership. You want a reason for the Poultry’s alleged hangover last season? Forget the short vacation and look to leadership in the room, or lack of it. Niedermayer was gone. Selanne was gone. Sasquatch remained. Chris Pronger, while a great defenseman, is no leader.
The Wings? Yeah. Hossa’s signing was a nice bit of motivation for the guys who won it last year, a player leaving huge cash on the table for a shot at the Cup. Cool. But, as far as diminishing the “hangover effect”? Unnecessary.
A team full of guys who recognize a rare opportunity to establish themselves as a dynasty? That’s the motivation and the reason there will be no hangover.
I’m on the road, which is why posting has been scarce. Normalcy will return in about a week. In the meantime, check out all the new goodies KK has to offer.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
