Uncle Mike?  The Line Forms Over Here

That would be the line for the Stress Train, if you’re wondering.

Mike Babcock? Stressed out?  Not possible?  Think again.  Splitting priorities will do that to you, and that’s exactly where he’ll be for the next 8 months. Split right down the middle.

TSN

Mike Babcock will be sworn in as the coach of the 2010 Canadian Olympic men’s hockey team in Montreal this week.

“Sworn in”?  Seriously.  Let me get this straight.  Canada literally swears in their coaching staffs?

Do the players have to be sworn in too?

“Raise your right hand and repeat after me...”

“I, Sidney Crosby, do hereby swear I won’t act like a crying little bitch on an international stage.  Seriously, I swear.”

Oh.  Stop.  You’re surprised?

Back to my Uncle.

First things first.  He’d better get hot on firing Brad McCrimmon, because we’re going to need someone who can help out brother Paulie while Uncle Mike’s thoughts are with his country rather than the Wings.

And let’s not kid ourselves, there are going to be days, even weeks, when our coach is thinking about Sweden in ways that trouble instead of please him.

How weird will it be for Mike Babcock to sit up at night wondering how to stop Henrik Zetterberg, rather than leverage him?  You don’t think he won’t shiver a bit when he sees Johan Franzen zip a wrister past Roberto Luongo in December, as he imagines the effect that could have on the rest of his life if it happens in a gold medal game in February?

He’ll be conflicted, but we’ll never know the extent.  He’ll be overworked, overtasked and mumbling more than ever before.  And to expect him to be able to offer the same kind of focus to the Wings as he has the last four years is not reasonable.

And no, we can’t blame Babcock. No way he can turn this down.  Can’t blame Canada.  They’ve hired the right guy.  Can’t blame the Wings for stockpiling talent up and down the organ-I-zation.  But man this is going to be tough, tough.  And not just for Babcock.

It might be literally easier to name the Wings who won’t be playing in the Olympics than those who will be.  I’d bet at least, and this is conservative, twelve players off the current roster represent their countries in Vancouver.  Ready?  Try this: Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Franzen, Hossa, Filppula, Lidstrom, Rafalski, Ericsson, Hudler, Osgood, Kronwall, Leino.

Yep. I said Osgood.  And I left out Samuelsson and Holmstrom.  I also left out Helm.  And you don’t think his name is being whispered these days?

The entire franchise is going to be picked to the bone by international scavengers.  And they’re going to be tired, more tired than they have been all this year.  More tired than they were last year or last Olympics.  Few teams in NHL history, if any, have played as much hockey as our Dynasty has the last three years, and now it’s going to be worse.

What team in the league is going to compare to that?  Pittsburgh? How many Olympians from that team, huh?  Maybe as few as two.  Seriously.  Other than Thid and Malkin, name me two players who are locks for Vancouver.

I, for one, am intensely looking forward to the Olympics.  I think it’s going to be a blast to watch and I think the Canada/Sweden Final will be a game for the ages.  Watching Zetterberg shut Crosby down again, in yet another huge setting, will be joyful.

But it’s best that we understand right up front the kind of toll this thing is going to take on the players, the coaches and the entire organ-I-zation.

In other words, Uncle Mike’s already aboard the Stress Train.  Any smart guy would be.  It would be for the best if you boarded that bitch too.  A summer-time excursion, an early start.  Come to think of it, leaving the Hasek was a silly thing to do in the first place.  It’s where we belong, isn’t it?

i’m sorry Chief, but I’m going to be on the opposing side if that Canada/Sweden match up does happen. i think VooX will be too.

Although I will say, just because I know Crosby is guaranteed the first-line centre position, doesn’t mean I have to like it. If I were Babcock, Crosby would be Canada’s third or fourth line centre, and Getzlaf would be the number one. He’s been a monster on the international stage, and hasn’t been completely shut down by Hank before unfortunately. I would say Hank was able to contain Getzlaf in the second round, but not outright shut him down the way he did Crosby. I have to admit, I hate Getzlaf, but not the way I hate Sasquatch. It’s in the same way I hate Joe Sakic. He’s given me nightmares about how he can seemingly score at will against us.

Ah the Olympics. The one time every four years where I want to puke at the thought of who might be donning the Canadian jersey. This time around there’s Crosby, Sasquatch, Cory *#$%@& Perry. I just hope Mike “I’m a forward playing defence” Green isn’t on the #1 pairing.

On the flip side, maybe he’ll run his Canadian players to the ground for 2 weeks hoping to leave a lasting impression for the playoffs…

By the way - I’m Canadian, live in Vancouver, and have tickets to the Gold Medal game.  Yet, I’m worried that as a Wings fan, I’ll be cheering for Sweden just because I like the players better.

If you’re referring to my picking on your captain, we’ve been doing that here well before the Pens won the Stanley Cup.

If you’re referring to my estimation as to how many Pens will be playing Olympic hockey? Prove me wrong.

Holland, Yzerman and Babcock.

Are they going to take Ozzie?  Draper?

This year is going to put a lot of stress on Wings’ management as well as players.

All that matters is that everyone comes home from the Olympics fairly healthy.

I couldn’t care any less if Babcock is distracted for that first half of the season. Makes zero difference, in all reality. In fact, I hope Canada loses, that way when he comes back for the second half of the NHL season, he’s pissed to all hell, whips his players into gear, and has more resolve than ever to win a Cup. I’ll have that.

Uncle Mike has all the tools he needs to run both benches in a season. The Olympics is a short term challenge, a little break from the epic grind of a few loooong NHL seasons.
Much of the leg work will be done by Stevie Y and subordinates. We’ll be fine.
I like to watch the Olympic flavor of puck, but don’t really care who wins. Seeing the Swede-Wings was nice last go-round and all, but I really don’t care who wins.

Posted by MOWingsfan19 on 06/23/09 at 12:46 PM ET

As a Wings fan, and a proud Canadian, I’ll take the nervousness in the regular season any day if it means the best coach in the world is behind our bench in Vancouver.

And don’t kid yourselves ... Uncle Mike’s priorities will be split, sure, but only until the Olympics are over. And once they’re done, they’ll be just enough time to ramp up for the playoffs.

I mean, the only reason to really be worried about this would be if the Wings somehow were in danger of NOT having a high seed come next spring. And do we really have to worry about that? No.

So either Babcock will be pissed about losing in the Olympics and he’ll have some gold-medal talent at his disposal to go after the cup, or he’ll be flush from winning and get to coach a bunch of guys that badly want to atone for their Olympic loss.

See? Look on the positive side. It’s win-win.

Nope.  Still rolling along.  There’s a mechanic clinging to the underside, and another hanging out a window.  A janitor has all the windows open, 10 fans on, and is trying to dilute the vomit with turpentine, which doesn’t do much since there was a lot of tupentine-and-vodka on the way down, before coming back up.  And of course, he has to work around all of the bodies laying around in the fetal position mumbling curses about various types of birds.  The shrapnel lodged in the walls from the grenade lobs in round 2 may become permanent.  Voox is probably out restocking, at the moment.

GtoL:  There is NO way Letang makes the Canadian team. Do you not realize how many top-notch defenders are vying for those spots. Off the very top of my head: Niedermayer, Pronger, Keith, Bouwmeester, Phaneuf, Green, Weber, Burns, Regher, Stuart, Vlasic, Coburn ... and in terms of young guys to bring just to watch and experience: Doughty, Schenn, Alzner are the future all-stars who will be there in 2010.

I like Letang. He’s a good young d-man, but no way in hell does he come any closer to Vancouver Olympic ice than a plane flight and some scalped tickets. Sorry.

I could see Fedotenko sneaking onto the Russian team though, he provides some grit that they’ll likely need on the 3rd/4th lines. Those first two Russian lines are going to be just SICK.
