Uncle Mike?  The Line Forms Over Here

That would be the line for the Stress Train, if you’re wondering.

Mike Babcock? Stressed out?  Not possible?  Think again.  Splitting priorities will do that to you, and that’s exactly where he’ll be for the next 8 months. Split right down the middle.

TSN

Mike Babcock will be sworn in as the coach of the 2010 Canadian Olympic men’s hockey team in Montreal this week.

“Sworn in”?  Seriously.  Let me get this straight.  Canada literally swears in their coaching staffs?

Do the players have to be sworn in too?

“Raise your right hand and repeat after me…”

“I, Sidney Crosby, do hereby swear I won’t act like a crying little bitch on an international stage.  Seriously, I swear.”

Oh.  Stop.  You’re surprised?

Back to my Uncle.

First things first.  He’d better get hot on firing Brad McCrimmon, because we’re going to need someone who can help out brother Paulie while Uncle Mike’s thoughts are with his country rather than the Wings.

And let’s not kid ourselves, there are going to be days, even weeks, when our coach is thinking about Sweden in ways that trouble instead of please him.

How weird will it be for Mike Babcock to sit up at night wondering how to stop Henrik Zetterberg, rather than leverage him?  You don’t think he won’t shiver a bit when he sees Johan Franzen zip a wrister past Roberto Luongo in December, as he imagines the effect that could have on the rest of his life if it happens in a gold medal game in February?

He’ll be conflicted, but we’ll never know the extent.  He’ll be overworked, overtasked and mumbling more than ever before.  And to expect him to be able to offer the same kind of focus to the Wings as he has the last four years is not reasonable.

And no, we can’t blame Babcock. No way he can turn this down.  Can’t blame Canada.  They’ve hired the right guy.  Can’t blame the Wings for stockpiling talent up and down the organ-I-zation.  But man this is going to be tough, tough.  And not just for Babcock.

It might be literally easier to name the Wings who won’t be playing in the Olympics than those who will be.  I’d bet at least, and this is conservative, twelve players off the current roster represent their countries in Vancouver.  Ready?  Try this: Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Franzen, Hossa, Filppula, Lidstrom, Rafalski, Ericsson, Hudler, Osgood, Kronwall, Leino.

Yep. I said Osgood.  And I left out Samuelsson and Holmstrom.  I also left out Helm.  And you don’t think his name is being whispered these days?

The entire franchise is going to be picked to the bone by international scavengers.  And they’re going to be tired, more tired than they have been all this year.  More tired than they were last year or last Olympics.  Few teams in NHL history, if any, have played as much hockey as our Dynasty has the last three years, and now it’s going to be worse.

What team in the league is going to compare to that?  Pittsburgh? How many Olympians from that team, huh?  Maybe as few as two.  Seriously.  Other than Thid and Malkin, name me two players who are locks for Vancouver.

I, for one, am intensely looking forward to the Olympics.  I think it’s going to be a blast to watch and I think the Canada/Sweden Final will be a game for the ages.  Watching Zetterberg shut Crosby down again, in yet another huge setting, will be joyful.

But it’s best that we understand right up front the kind of toll this thing is going to take on the players, the coaches and the entire organ-I-zation.

In other words, Uncle Mike’s already aboard the Stress Train.  Any smart guy would be.  It would be for the best if you boarded that bitch too.  A summer-time excursion, an early start.  Come to think of it, leaving the Hasek was a silly thing to do in the first place.  It’s where we belong, isn’t it?

Not only them, but this could get nasty amongst the 19 as well. I love me some Red Wings, but when it comes to the international stage I root for my home country, no matter who dons the jersey or makes ridiculous comments about their ability vs other teams’ (I’m looking at you Cherry).

I just hope we’ll all still be able to come together for deep run next year for #12.

Is this a blood vow that we can all take? Because I’m with you on that one.

I root for Team USA ... the only time in my life I’ve ever been anything short of worshipful of Stevie Y was when he scored that offsides OT goal against Mike Richter in the 1996 World Cup. But failing the resurrection of Herb Brooks and another Miracle on Ice, I’ll be rooting for Sweden in Vancouver. I also like Finland a lot, and I can’t wait to see Pasha and Ovie together for Russia.

I will root for team USA and then situation-ally depending on who is playing who.

DiPetro is good goalie when healthy and you’re forgetting Ryan Miller.

Tim Thomas is pretty much a lock to be on the team. I imagine that Robert Esche will get a good look after playing well in the KHL and the World Championships.

I can’t see Howard or McCollum getting any kind of look over Conklin if comes to it.

It will probably be Miller/Thomas/Dipetro

Also? From the Pens? Gonchar is a lock, and I would bet a decent amount of coin that Orpik will be playing for team USA.

Nowhere near the Wings level of exhaustion, but those two will be in Vancouver, and possibly Hal Gill, Jordan Staal, and Marc-Andre Fleury as well.

I’ll grant you Gonchar, given Russia’s defensive depth (or lack thereof) and Staal as likely, and Orpik as “possible.”

As for the others, I’m not sure what you’re smoking. Not even Brian Burke is dumb enough to include Hal Gil on the USA team. Even though they’re playing on North American surfaces, his immobility would be exposed big time in the tournament. Olympic officials would actually call his “offensive lineman on skates” act.

And do you really think Fleury has a shot given the depth the Canadians have in net?

Wouldn’t be a bad choice (not a fan of his leadership style, but he can lead). Give Lecalier an A, too. And Crosby, to placate the masses. Explain it the same way his being left off the 2006 team was explained.

I can see it… mostly because these guys are much better human beings than we are. They’re good sports and are willing to recognize talent for what its worth, even from mortal enemies. Hell, if asked, the Captain probably wouldn’t have much bad to say about the Turtle, or Sasquatch, let along Thid. I’m hoping he’s neither the #1 Center, nor the captain of team Canada, but objectively speaking that’s probably out of spite. I don’t think Thid is much of a leader, but I’m also willing to admit my judgment is clouded with hatred…

Oh, and for you trolls who’d like to replace “hatred” with “jealousy,” a giant preemptive “shutthefuckupdickbag” to you.

I always cheer for Team USA first. I have a USA jersey, hopefully soon to have Schneider’s name on it. I wanted them to beat Canada so bad in 2002, even with Stevie Y. on that team. I also cheer for Sweden, which has worked out nicely because the US can’t make it anywhere near the medal rounds anymore. For me, country first (until they are eliminated) and then players.
The sad thing about Team USA this year is that we finally have some really good young talent, but Burke is in charge. I sure hope Wilson brings his style of play, rather than Burke’s. And I hope Gill doesn’t make it, isn’t even thought of. For two reasons. A: I don’t want to be represented by that pathetic excuse for a skater; and 2: His constant interference will be called every time in International play, and the team is really screwed if they have to play a man down constantly.
As far as goaltending for the US, I’d say Ryan Miller and Tim Thomas. DiPietro has failed miserably in the Olympics in the past, and might not be healthy anyway. Not sure about the third goalie.
As far as MAF making Team Canada…I don’t think so. Luongo is all but guaranteed the starting position. They’re likely to bring Brodeur. And giving his recent performances, I’d say Mason over Fleury.

Some of us will probably be neutral here, Alzy. Whether due to not being particularly nationalistic (guilty as charged) or our team getting knocked out of contention earlier than expected.

I don’t wish ill of any team, I just really, really dislike Cherry and seeing Russia beat Canada would bring me joy simply because it could make Cherry’s head explode into a pulpy, bigoted mass.

Sounds like you’re makin’ excuses for next seasons failure already,“we had too many players in the olympics, it was too many games”.  In the 80’s the Oilers had many players on Team Canada in the ‘84 Canada Cup which was after their ‘83-‘84 Stanley Cup Season and right before their ‘84-‘85 Stanley Cup Season. And if that’s not enough 2 seasons after that they had many players again that played in the ‘87 Canada Cup that was sandwiched between their ‘87 &‘88 Stanley Cup Seasons. 5 seasons over 500 games potentially or Oiler players . So don’t act like no other team in history has ever had to endure this.Gretzky for example played a total of 480 games between R.S.,S.C.P. & C.C. Now I’ll say this, he did break down for the first time in his career a little during the ‘88 season(he missed 16 games). It might have been because he was getting a bit tired after all that hockey. Who knows? But Detroit wont be the first team to go through this. Please no excuses.

Shane Doan has captained Team Canada to several successful runs in the World Championships recently. If he were playing for a better team, he’d be posting 30-goal seasons easily, maybe even one or two 40-goal seasons. Plus, going by what current and former teammates have said about him, and by what I hear from fans who have met him, the guy is almost impossible to dislike. On top of all that, the blood, sweat, and tears he’s poured into a market that barely knows he exists makes me sad for him, and he re-signed in Phoenix for less than he likely would’ve gotten on the open market to keep doing it. Stats aside, he’s an infinitely better captain than Crosby, and I can’t believe a group of very smart hockey guys would pass him over in favor of Thid.

A Sweden/Russia gold medal game is possible, and would be really exciting hockey. Ovie/Malkin/Datsyuk et. al. vs. Lidstrom, Zetterberg, Sedins, Franzen, et. al. Imagine what that would do to Cherry. Canada not even making the gold-medal game? I don’t think anyone could beat them out for Bronze, though. I don’t want Stevie and Babs to do badly, but I also want Cherry to have awesome European players forced in his face in his own country. Maybe this is what Canada needs to be forced to see that there is talent around the world.

Olympics is all politics, and I would not be surprised if Stevey and Mikey decide they are not bigger than politics.
I like Iginla, but would honestly choose Doan first.
The Olympic roster is going to be chock full of leaders, and the Captaincy will more than likely turn out to be just a formality, leaving fans to try to figure out which player was the true leader behind the dressing room door.
Considering the political aspects of the Olympics, I would not even be surprised if someone like Joe Thornton was given the ‘C’.

Thanks, Drew.  Completely forgot about Miller but still I will be nervous as f*ck if DiPietro gets the call as starting keeper.

Tim Thomas?  I think it comes down to him and Miller.  But Miller may be a better big game goalie as he’s shown in the past with little to no defense.

As for the tired angle (and forgive me if people have mentioned this) but the hangover [fatigue] is more about mental than physical fatigue.  All Babcock talked about last summer was his worry about everyone saying how great they were all summer and them getting ahead of themselves.  Well they did and it cost them in the regular season.

That’s the same reason why I’ve never shared the same view about McCrimmon, I view that as a major cop out.  These veterans didn’t forget how to play defense, how to penalty kill and how to finish games.  They were lazy and it showed.

Either way this could be a very long year for sure.  But a long year for the Wings is still better than 29 other teams good years.

I’m rooting for country first, but when that ends, probably quickly, I’ll be rooting for Sweden first and Russia a very close second.  Ultimately, as much as I love Stevie and Babs, what I care most about is seeing Cindy fail.  Nothing would bring me greater joy next winter than watching team Sweden shut him down.  Or anyone else for that matter.  Just him being shut down.  I will say that I am greatly anticipating watching the *potential* chemistry between Ovechkin and Pasha.  That could be some of the most gorgeous hockey we’ve seen.

I have been thinking of this scenario for a few months now Chief, ever since Stevie was named GM of Team Canada.

On home ice, Canada will definitely have an advantage.  But we’ve seen in the past with great expectations come great disappointment.  In 1988 when we last hosted the Olympics, Canada did not win a single gold medal.

I have tickets to the bronze medal game, which in my mind will be Russia vs. USA.  It surprises me to see that some of the American 19 don’t recognize how strong their team will be this year.  Trust me.  Take some of your youngsters who were amazing on the international stage, like Kessel and Johnson, add in a couple of young Hawks stars, and mixed with some of the usual veterans, they will be a very good team.  I definitely think USA will be fighting for bronze.

The Gold medal game will be decided amongst Sweden, Canada, and Russia.

As far as who you root for, well I root for country first.  Wings second.  USA third.  Canada will always my home and native land, the Wings will always be my team and I love watching the players anywhere they play, and USA is our neighbour who us Canadians love like a delinquent older brother.

And Chief, you better take back that trite about never saying a bad word about Rosby again.  He punches players in the nuts, dammit!  Uncle Mike and The Captain will have no choice but to anoint Rosby the Captain.  The country is searching for their next iconic hockey star, like Gretzky was.  Stevie Y and Uncle Mike have on choice but to give Sid a shot.

Here`s another dilemma.  As part of the Olympic ticket lottery I not only won 4 Bronze medal tickets, but 4 Men`s Short Program figure skating tickets as well.  So here is the problem.  Do I take the girlfriend to watch both events in February, or do I not tell the girlfriend about the figure skating tickets, sell them to a scalper, and pay for the trip with the profits?

I forewarn you, my advice is based upon the fact that figure skating bores me to tears.

Sell them and maybe use some of the profits to buy your girlfriend something nice. On the plus side: you don’t have to watch figure skating, and extra cash.

On the other hand, if she actually likes figure skating, then it would be a nice gesture for her (though you may be sitting through routines thinking about how they could be spiced up with scantilty clad women and rampaging lizards).

“Swearing in” makes it sound like jury duty or something.  Blech.  smile

I must be terribly cynical, as I don’t see the Olympics as anything other than one of the biggest commercial enterprises ever, and a great sporting spectacle, but not as anything like the profound “movement” that some who run it would like to think it is.  But I don’t feel any compulsion whatsoever to care who wins based on whether or not they happen to be citizens of the same country I am - as many of my fellow citizens that I encounter during the course of an average day impress me as jackasses, like many other people no matter what their heritage.  So I cheer for the athletes, not the country - I’d love to see a gold-medal game between Russia and Sweden, and I wouldn’t be at all disturbed if the US was out of the medals entirely because I don’t feel any particular attachment to the flag when carried by athletes.

Politics or not, I can’t see giving Crosby the captaincy over Iginla - or Shane Doan, also based on his history with the Canadian team.  Maybe an A, but my choice would be actually be Jarome Iginla - tough, hardworking, talented, and would represent the team with a lot of class, tact, and dignity.  No whining from Iggy.  smile
