Waive Goodbye To Mac

Updated: Tick Tock, on the Fan 590, just said that if Mac clears, he’s staying in Detroit.
I’m sure the emperor has beaten me to this, and if you’re reading this on the main page for the second time, I feel real and sincere shame.
Via TSN,
The Detroit Red Wings placed forward Darren McCarty on waivers on Tuesday.
McCarty, 36, signed a one-year contract with the Wings in the offseason after re-joining the club last winter and helping lead the team to its fourth Stanley Cup in 11 years.
More from our Diggers as I get it.
Here’s what I’ve learned: Administrative in nature, almost. As Heaton put it over at the main page, this happened once already this year to Mac and probably will again…as it did with Downey all last season. We’re all assuming he clears, that he’ll re-join, and this will be an afterthought. Heaton just emailed me and made a good point. He doesn’t believe Mac will see a minute in GR this year and hasn’t thought that since he read Tick Tock’s quote saying he considered McCarty like a son. Not in a Bettman/Thid kind of way, either. Sickos.
That’s what others are telling me. Here’s what I’m telling you: I have no idea. I don’t understand it, not that it’s all that complicated. Just like I can’t figure out how to post something about whether we can keep “all 3” because the Cap and all that goes with it makes me sad and confused. I’ll ge to that…eventually.
Now, since this (Mac on waivers) is going to generate the conversation….we’re a month into the season, Cleary’s out indefinitely because some hack of a doctor apparently stuck a butter knife in his eye. Leino’s tearing up the AHL. Maybe it’s time to give him a shot, a look-see, eh?

this is a flexibility move, incase they get an injury to a goaltender and have to clear cap room for Howard of Larsson
Posted by Pharazon from England on 11/18/08 at 01:31 PM ET
This is what they did all last year with Downey, I believe Downey was waived 4 or 5 times.
Isn’t there an increasing risk with Mac being picked up by another team, though? He’s been pretty solid over the past games.

Just more Salary Cap BS,

I doubt it. There’s probably a GM asterisk on the guy that says if you make him move away from his kids, he’ll probably start drinking again.

I think the liklihood of another team claiming Mac off of waivers is about as much Malkin actually running for POTUS (Sorry Pittsburgh)

More flexibility BS. It means as much as the cap does. It’s risky, but we did it with Downey last year and never lost him. D-Mac is such an inextricable part of the Wings that I don’t think there’s much likelihood of him being picked up.
And SHAME on The Highlander, for this sentence:
Again, I never would have thought it last spring. McCarty has turned me into a fan.
Where the hell has McLeod been the past fifteen years? He’s only NOW a fan?

That’s mean and entirely unworthy of this comments section.
I’m glad you guys are relaxed about this, cause I was about to flip the F&$@ OUT. He’s played much better over the past few games and is on an upward swing. The fight last night was solid.
But, yea, Leino is makin’ it rain down there and he needs a ho in this area code. I’m good with that.
Come back soon Mac.

I thought the same thing, But I can forgive him for being skeptical. Mac’s return seemed to be more about nostalgia than it did about maintaining our competitive edge. He’s proving some people wrong.

Wow Osrt, didn’t intend for it to come across as mean-spirited at all. There’s no bigger fan of his than me…as I mentioned before, I have his gear from his 10 games with the Generals to prove it…but it’s been pretty well documented that his comeback started with his kids, and then his love for this team. You take him away and you run the risk of extinguishing the fire that launched his comeback. I would think that was fairly obvious to other GMs, but sorry if it came across more crass than intended. I don’t think Mac’s going anywhere.
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 11/18/08 at 02:36 PM ET
I’m pretty sure it has to do with the possibility of a goalie injury. Because we’re carrying the extra personnel on our roster, it would normally take 24 hours to make a roster move. With Mac already having cleared waivers (ideally) that roster change can take place immediately, enabling a goalie to be sent up in case of a minor injury or something to one of the two.

omg, r u serious!
McCarty is awful. What’d he play, round 5 minutes last night? And that’s being generous.
No one in hell would pick him up off waivers. Why he is here, and helm and leino aren’t is crazy.
And why did we sign McCarty in the first place. THAT IS WHAT WASNT FAIR TO HIM. (but its either detroit or nowhere I suppose).
Still more upsetting is we have Maltby and Lilja still on the team. WTF!!! Kyle Quincey anyone? Anyone think that he’s going to be a solid second line d-man for the next 15 years? He sure is playing like it. (8 points in 14 games, -1, 22 min per nite) not bad for being 22 and on one of the worst teams in the league.

Not sure what game you were watching…Mac’s first shift generated sustained pressure and he looked dangerous. He’s been positionally solid - especially when a lot of the other veterans haven’t been - and has made the most of the time begin given him. What I’d love to know is how him being given 5 minutes somehow equates to him being “awful”.

Obviously somebody playing 5 minutes behind Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Filppula, Hossa, Holmstrom, Franzen and Hudler automatically qualifies as “awful”.

Two more people that no nothing about hockey. That’s all I’m going to say, but then I started typing…
You probably also don’t think Crosby and Malkin aren’t any good, that Lilja is the best thing since sliced bread, that the grind line is as “awesome” as ever. Pathetic. And your presidential candidate lost too. Only McCainiacs would post such retarded drivel on a blog.
And if you mean good positionally, I would have to say he was. Was consistently in the defensive zone struggling to get the puck past center ice.
I dont even know what to say about the ice time issue….except that playing behind the players listed above doesnt make you awful. Being a washed up has been who takes roster spots away from youth because the organization feels bad for him makes you awful.
I think that anyone, anyone in the league could take his spot. Aaron Downey = 100x better.
And both of you obviously took me serious enough to respond. OMG LOL
Posted by DrW from Detroit on 11/18/08 at 03:57 PM ET
DrW:
Right. Just because you’re bad at presenting arguments means we know nothing about hockey. You’re the one who used ice time as a factor to prove that he is awful. The fact is, McCarty has been more effective the past few games, and is not, in fact, as awful as you say. He’s still probably going to lose his spot to Cleary once his eye is healed. Nobody claimed he was amazing, but if he was truly awful, then you can bet he wouldn’t have the roster spot in favor of somebody like Helm or Leino.
Just because I respond, doesn’t mean I take you seriously. I’m actually just kind of bored, and would rather waste it talking to internet trolls about hockey than anything productive.
Posted by halomasterd4n on 11/18/08 at 04:06 PM ET
I think DrW is someone I have seen on the Freep boards a few times. he loves to tell everyone how little they know about hockey while exposing his own ignorance in the most blatant and obvious ways. just ignore him.

I’d just like to say I voted for Obama and think McCarty has done well so far.

^Hah, in Arizona too. You, friend, are clearly going to burn in a special section of hell.

Double negative. Beautiful.
that Lilja is the best thing since sliced bread, that the grind line is as “awesome” as ever.
Reading comprehension isn’t a part of your skill set, huh?
*Gabe: I was being ironical. I did think you were poking fun at Mac but I dug it. Good explanation though; we should probably forward that to the GMs in case they didn’t get it.
Posted by Osrt on 11/18/08 at 05:48 PM ET
Wow, let’s not let the troll get us started on politics. I’d really rather live in ignorance of who ya’ll voted for.
Where the hell has McLeod been the past fifteen years? He’s only NOW a fan?
It’s unfortunate phrasing, as I’m sure he’s been a fan of Mac for a long time, if not a fan of him having a spot on the roster. But I have to say that I agree with the sentiment. When Mac first came up from Grand Rapids, I was definitely skeptical; the speed of the comeback seemed incredible. I thought the timing made sense in terms of getting the team in the right attitude for the playoffs, but his play wasn’t exactly exceptional. Plus I like Downey, for all that the kid couldn’t totally skate, and I missed his fights. I was always happy for Mac as a person, but it wasn’t until recently that I believed that he deserved to be on the roster not just because of who he is, but because of how he plays.

Wow somehow you are able to make the presumptuous jump into politics, and use the term “retarded”... give it a rest “dude” (and I use that term loosely).
Aaron Downey = 100x better.
Not if you consider hockey ability.

No worries this time. George reports via the Free Press that Mac cleared.
Also, I’m thinkin Cleary needs to hit IR. That eye thing is just drawing out to long.
Posted by Nate A from Detroit-ish on 11/19/08 at 03:30 PM ET
If he does end up missing 10 games with the eye, they can put him on the LTIR retroactive to the first game missed and free up the cap space. I think they’re holding out because he’ll be back before then.

I’ll post the same thing I did on a few other boards. He’ll get waived again in December but he won’t be reassigned to GR. This is what they did all last year with Downey, I believe Downey was waived 4 or 5 times.
