We Don’t Need That Kind Of Team In Our Lives

60 degrees in your nation’s capitol (capital) this morning.  All meteorological indications point to a sunny, joy-filled weekend.  I’m rested after a long week, energized and all is right with the world.

That is if you can forget giving up a three-goal lead, allowing six power play goals, nine goals overall, leaving your goalie in for eight of them, and sprinting to the penalty box like it was a phone booth with free porn and you were a Pred fan.

The only saving grace many of us can claim is that we didn’t stay up to watch the carnage.  Me? I learned of it driving to work.  The display on my Sirius radio tuner flashed “Detroit 4, San Jose 9” and I thought it most certainly was a typo. Some drunken shift worker hit the “9” instead of the “0”.  Nope.  Got to work, opened up the Freep’s flashy new website, hunted and pecked to find the Wing coverage buried two-third of the way down the page (the print equivalent of placement adjacent to the classifieds) and threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Glanced at the story and came away with a few issues.  Explain them to me if you would be so kind.

*Why was Dominik Hasek asked to remain after the 6th and 7th goals, when the game was so obviously lost?  Forget the ego.  Hasek’s insane so giving up 8 can’t damage his psyche any further.  My concern is injury.  If we’re not going to start him in back to back games, it would seem clear that leaving him in during a blowout is foolish at best.

Mike Babcock, in his Mike Babcock Consolidated Quote of the Day, had this to say.

“I love LA.  I was looking for that midget, Randy Newman, tonite. I’ll bet if I’d asked him, he would have sang that song, ‘I looovvveeee LA!!’ Great town.  Good team. I thought we’d be ready. Gameplanned for them. Gameplanned for the Kings, but the Kings beat us and beat us good.  What? We’re in San Jose?”

*I’ll take a healthy Anaheim, Bubba, last year’s Oilers, a rejuvenated Calgary, anyone...anyone other than San Jose in the playoffs.  As Appollo’s trainer Tony said to the Master of Disaster in Rocky II, “we beat that man like nothing I’ve ever seen, and he...just...kept...coming.  We don’t need that kind of man in our life.” We don’t need San Jose in our playoff lives.  9 goals and none from Joe Thornton.  We’ve played them four times. Lost three.  Two of those losses were of the humiliating variety.  We don’t need that kind of team in our life.

*3 goals. I’ve said it before and you guys ignored me.  But I’m going to keep saying it.  We give up 3 and you might as well put the kids to bed because nothing good’s gonna happen.  Detroit has given up 3+ goals fifteen times this year, and lost 13 of those games.

*You haven’t seen links or commentary here to the Chelios situation.  That’s primarily due to the fact that I haven’t been following it. I’ve been out of the loop for a few days here, so I don’t feel comfortable discussing an issue like that without having read up on it.  Here’s what I have to say:  we could have used him last night, and it’s got to be a very difficult time for him.  We all know Chris Chelios as a player fueled by emotion.  You have to think that same emotion is taking a toll on him as he grieves for his employees.

Hey...I see that a Navy vet named Wesley Autrey saved a guy in Manhatten.  Apparently a gentleman slipped on to the subway tracks and America’s new hero saw the episode unfolding, leapt, grabbed the fella just before the train got there and saved his life.

The name of the guy Autrey saved?  Camryn Hollowpeter.

Hollowpeter?  He’ll be trying again.

IWO, If you think you are nauseated, you should have watched the game.  After playing pretty well for 15 minutes, The Wings were totally dominated.  It was men against boys. What did Wilson do?  He changed goalies.  Babcock should have copied Wilson and changed goalies after giving up 3 quick goals.  This would have possibly changed the momentum of the game. But noooo...... he hung Hasek out to dry.  Babcock does not seem to have a feel for the psychological flow of a game.

The Detroit News is full of the Cheli’s Chili stuff:

Chelios was on TV yesterday.  He is clearly shaken, and taking this very hard.  He is an extremely loyal family guy, and this episode, like the cancer death of his sister, will be tough for him.

Silver lining:

Working on the assumption that we meet the Sharks in the playoffs our guys will definitely get up for the games.

Well, it would appear the end is near. Doom is no longer lurking around the corner, it is in full view. Those who have not prepared are in for a tough time. The optimists who allowed good feelings to guide their thinking will now be looking for a soft place to land. It is time to head for shelter because the storm that is this season could quickly become ugly.  The debacle last night clearly signals that the season is over. Cancel your Center Ice Package and start setting those tee times for this Spring.

All the celfone carriers are overwhelmed with voicemails today.  It seems none of the RedWing fans are answering their phones.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

How Others View The A2Y 19

"Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on."

"I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site."
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields

"I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season."
--Mile High Hockey

"I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…"
--In The Cheap Seats

"It's just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don't deserve their team."
--Thhom

"I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think."
--Drew Sharp

"Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players? I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better."
--A2Y Fan, Jeff Beaumont

"Have you ever *read* A2Y? Its the most opinionated, juvenile stuff i've read."
--Paul Nicholson
