Can’t help but wonder what kind of tantrums this headline caused in more than a few NHL cities.

From yesterday’s Detroit News: Finally.  Red Wings in Cup Final After Six Year Wait.

Man. Six whole years.

Alright.  A few items of interest.  As you can see on the port side, your Pen resources have been added.  Peruse as you see fit.  Nice job on the photoshops yesterday. Received a few more in the mail overnight, which I’ll be posting this evening.  That will be the norm.  Email them to me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and I’ll do one graphic post every night throughout the Finals.

Needless to say, the MSM interest in this series is huge (for hockey).  There is no way I can keep up with all the predictions, etc.  If you’re looking for that stuff, I’d recommend you go to the KK hockey page or Snapshots.  I’ll bring you reaction from other bloggers, but I’m just too lazy to read, cut, paste, link, thank all those “professional” writers who picked against the Wings up to now.

Except for Ted Montgomery.  I’ll make time for you.

Pensblog.  Later this week, each of our sites will be running Cup Final previews.  They’ll give us a glimpse of the Pens and vice versa.

Live Blogs.  For those of you new to A2Y, late comers or Wing haters, both, etc.  We do live blogs every game, usually starting 45 minutes before the puck drops.  This Saturday will be no exception.  Of course, I’ll be at the Joe paying 28 bucks/beer but the LB will carry on.  It’s usually better after I’ve passed out anyway.

Also, for those of you who haven’t fully experienced the majesty that is A2Y, I’d recommend you read the glossary.

Finally, I see that our first day of photoshop brilliance has already offended at least one reader.  For those who found our insinuation that Sidney Crosby uses a feminine hygiene product to be in poor taste, you have my sincere apologies.  In fact, I’ll go out on a limb and agree with you.  He probably doesn’t use that brand.

What was the last time Stanley Cup Final featured better and more exciting matchup than this year? Any idea? I don’t follow hockey for that long time, but I am certain that this is the best SCF of this century so far.

It’s certainly the best matchup since 1994 with New York and Vancouver.

Well, Barry Melrose picked the Wings - very reluctantly, though.  You could almost see the bright plastic squirt gun pointed at his mullet.

He’ll flip-flop as soon as the Penguins win a game - whether it makes the series 1-0 or 3-1 is irrelevant.

As a Wings fan, I have to be excited, and I do agree that these are the 2 best teams. But you have to admit, Tampa Bay winning a Game 7 in OT was pretty exciting.

What is it w/ Melrose, and his mantra, “hockey the way it was meant to be played”? Is a European-influenced puck-control game like that of the Wings a betrayal of the legacy of Gordie Howe or something? That he would pick a weakened Colorado team over Detroit doesn’t say much for his judgment.

Yeah, it was good(Tampa - Calgary), but I mean before the series started. This series can end in a sweep and be a complete snoozer, but on the paper and in advance I think it is the best SCF in a long, long time.

The first two or three games of that Calgary-Tampa series were thoroughly unbearable to watch.

Just because a series goes seven, doesn’t make that series a great one.  Look at the Anaheim-New Jersey series.  That was a nightmare on ice.

Ugh.  The Devils. That was absolutely ghastly.

The novelty of this series is that the teams actually believe in scoring goals - multiple goals, instead of the ever-exciting game of “score one that ricochets off the defenseman’s skate and then chip the puck out of the zone for the next 48 minutes.”

Agree with Baroque.
I like the idea of 2 teams that PLAY TO WIN playing in the SCPO’s. Nothing like the mentality of playing not to lose to suck any bit of anything entertaining out of a game or series.

Plus it seems like every time the Wings slip into ‘playing not to lose’ mode they start giving up mad crazy goals.

Shudder.

This series has so much potential.  I can’t wait for the first game.  I am hoping that having some of these games on NBC may help catch a few casual viewers flipping through channels who stay and get psyched about the sport.  I’m just glad these are goal scoring teams who skate fast and shoot a lot.
