As I predicted early and often, it looks as though Marian Hossa isn’t going to sign with the Wings.
I mean, he turned down a decade from Tick Tock, so obviously a deal’s not in the cards, right?
Not so fast says Craig Custance.
...the possibility of a deal still exists.
An NHL source told SportingNews.com late Tuesday night that discussions between the two sides will continue.
It’s not an issue of either side wanting to get a deal completed, it’s a matter of finding common ground. The Red Wings would like to keep Hossa at a annual salary cap number in the $4 million range, which would be considerably less than he’d earn on the open market.
Personally? I think the chances are very, very slim. Khan(!) used the term “non-negotiable” in the story linked above. As in 4/year…take it or leave it.
So, despite my consistent guarantees that Hossa would stay a Wing through 2020 or so, I’m betting he’s gone. Too much money to be had.
If indeed Hossa goes for the cash, heads to LA, Edmonton, Montreal…any number of teams who have lots of money but little hope of short-term success? Well, then good luck. We respect the fact that he left millions on the table last year to play for a Cup with the best team in hockey. He rolled the dice, lost and is now going to apparently move on. He gave us a great year, 40 goals, all his effort and that’s the most we can ask of him or any player.
If Hoss leaves, takes the money and scampers? Now you have a choice. All 19 of us do. You can either throw empties at him as he leaves and bitch like a Pens fan about being “betrayed”, or we can thank the guy for taking a chance and playing hard. I choose the latter.
Pittsburgh fans whined for twelve months about Hossa leaving. In a lot of ways, the way they cried after he left defined them and the bitterness never went away. Still today, after winning a Cup, they can’t let it go. Hossa’s a good guy. He just didn’t want to play in Pittsburgh. What a crime.
Now it appears that he would rather leave the best organ-I-zation in all of sports for a lot more money. Same situation? Similar. He left for hockey reasons last year. He’s leaving, if he goes, now because he can’t turn down the money Ritch (that’s how he spells his name is) Winter has convinced him will be out there. And it’s hard to quibble about that, about not wanting to walk away from as much as 3 million more per year.
If this is it, Marian? Thanks for the good year. You’re welcome back in Detroit any time. When you do come back into town take note of how you’re greeted and how that differs from the way you were treated when you returned to Pittsburgh. Take note of how the fans welcome you back and of what the Wing players say about you when you’re gone. At that point you’ll see how one franchise is classy and the other? Not so much

Sh!t, I didn’t even boo Federov…I’d welcome him back with open arms, or thank him for taking the discount last year and giving us one hell of a season. He left upwards of $60 mil on the table to come to Hockeytown, we all knew he came here to win a cup…it didn’t happen. I can’t be mad at a man for wanting to make fair value in the market. We had our choice between Mule and Hoss…well I think Holland made the right decision (it’s like he foresaw play-off performances this year and years to come). Mule is a beast and will continue to be so for years.

Thanks for the memories, even though they weren’t so great…

Now if he really wanted to be a Wing he’d take a one-year deal for league minimum with the understanding that if we have cap space after this coming season (it’s likely we will with Lidstrom’s current deal ending) we could then sign him to term.

I wish him well. He tried to do something alot of players wouldnt have even considered. It was great watching him in the Winged Wheel. I agree with Team Dub I hope he does well but not against us.

Personally, I don’t understand Hossa’s decision. Granted, he’ll probably make more money on a six-year deal elsewhere than a ten-year deal in Detroit (plus what he might make after he’s 36 if he doesn’t retire). Even though there are no guarantees, Detroit is the best team in terms of contention for the cup on a regular basis. Eight to ten years of that - depending on physical condition, ability, and desire - seems better compared to an unknown team.
Then again, the chain of events looks a lot like last year - so far.

Personally, I don’t understand Hossa’s decision.
Me either, and I have some of the same thoughts regarding cup chances. The Winged Wheel is, without question, a perennial threat to at least go deep. If winning a cup was really his end-all motivation, then I have a feeling that his new 6.5+ a year is going to be funding a rather large medicine cabinet of NeverWonACupAZine.
I’ve always wondered if Fedorov ever wonders what could have been…

Good Luck to Marian the “Nasty” one, I enjoyed watching him light it up during the regular season. Everyone knew it would be hard to fit him in for term, prior to Lids contract expiring and Tick Tock’s mastery with the Mule and “Z”.
Class act. He gained my respect, I really hurt for him after the loss and having to watch him deal with the MSM’s glee, seeing his pain and professional explanation dealing with his decision. Peckerheads.

You can say what you want about Pens fans complaing/whining about Hossa leaving. It was a completely different situation last year then it is this year. He had management, the fans, and the team thinking he was going to re-sign.
I knew the bitter ones would come back with that. I had no doubt. Look back at the quotes from Hossa and even Ri(t)ch Winter all year. All he talked about was how he wanted to find a way to stay in Detroit. Now he’s leaving, and we understand it. You guys don’t and never will. No shock there.
Wings fans would say the same thing if Hossa came out today and said “I’m signing with Pittsburgh because they give me the best chance to win a cup” You then would understand why Pens fans were disgruntled.
That would, literally, never happen. Enjoy your Cup. You have 48 Tuesdays with it left. Until then keep whining and bitching.

I like Hossa, and was hoping that he would be staying with Detroit. However, I woke up today, read this and I can honestly say that regardless of what he does, even if it is signing with Pittsburgh for 1$ a year, I’ll be just fine with it. I suspect I’ll have to change my avatar sometime this afternoon.

And let’s be honest, had Detroit been dissed like Pittsburgh last year, the “Chief” would have had blog material for a year with the other 18 acting as angry mob. It’s the human condition.
I harbour no ill will against Hossa for leaving. Schadenfreude after the Penguins won the Cup? Yes, absolutely. Hate? No. I suspect the majority of Penguins fans felt the same way. If there was a remote chance of seeing Hossa in Pittsburgh, eg. an inexpensive way, I think a lot of fans would like it - myself included.

The 2009 Stanley Cup does not the best team in hockey make. But keep deluding yourself.
Bye Hossa. You had a great season. Good luck somewhere else. No hard feelings. Seriously.
Off topic but to illustrate my point: I live in WI. I am a Packer fan. I am a Favre fan. I’ll be okay if he plays for the Vikings this year. I loved him while he was here, management screwed him, he screwed himself with his indecisiveness, he moved on, so did we, so be it. And he played here for sixteen years.
Things happen in sports where a team or player for one reason or another may not be a good fit. Big deal, move on. No need to be a whiny bitch Pens fan about it.

I’m fine with it. The Wings have always been a better team when they could roll four deep lines. Keeping Hossa would cost us some depth, just as it would have cost Pittsburgh last year. If Tick Tock finds a way, great. If not, no problems here. Good luck, Hoss.

So, which team will Hossa lead to a Cup loss next year?
Posted by Bryan from Pittsburgh on 07/01/09 at 09:18 AM ET
Of course, we will give Hossa credit for scoring 40 goals in 74 games during the regular season. If he’s not on the ice for the 71 goals he was involved in, the 40 takeaways, and the roughly 1 hit/game who knows what seed the Wings get and what would have happened without home ice. Do we start any more series splitting the first two games, or going down 2-0? Do we lose game 7 vs. the Ducks at the pond?
I bet the boys have learned a lot from the mental funkiness they had this year, and will not have to rely on so much talent when their will to win isn’t cutting it.
Posted by MarkK from Maryland on 07/01/09 at 09:19 AM ET
Happy trails, Mars. No ill will here, your leaving won’t break the organization. We’ll be fine without you. I just wish you were more effective in the playoffs, that’s all.
As for bitter Pens fans, the team that Hossa left last year was a team coached by Michelle Thierrienne. Who wouldn’t have wanted to leave?

One more time? You have no idea what’s in store for you this summer.
Posted by IwoCPO from Sunny San Diego, bitches on 07/01/09 at 09:30 AM ET
Every time a Red Wings fan says something bad or nasty about the Penguins, it makes my summer SO MUCH SWEETER. By all means, continue. It’ll make next year’s rubber match all the better.
Anyway, Hossa is a selfish player…whether it’s money, or a championship, or whatever…he went to a team for himself. He didn’t care about the Penguins, he doesn’t care about the Red Wings (if he leaves, of course). It has nothing to do with the team. If he wants a big check now, he’ll leave to get it.
I’m not bitter about Hossa leaving. I was a bit upset at the time, but what a great move it ended up being for the Pens! I would just never believe that anything he does is for the team.
Posted by Bryan from Pittsburgh on 07/01/09 at 09:36 AM ET
My god, are the Penguins fans still showing up to bitch and moan about how the Wings fans haven’t all prostrated themselves before them and kissed their feet? I’ve been too busy at work to read the comments recently, but I’d just assumed that the Pens fans had found better things to do by now.
I was never able to figure out how signing Hossa was a mathematical possibility after Zetterberg and Franzen had their contracts; you’d think he and his agent should’ve known what type of money the Wings had to work with. Guess both sides have been hoping for a miracle. I’m really sad to see him go—I think he’s a great fit for Detroit—but hopefully this will keep most of the team intact.

I think you guys spend more time trying to justify how you’re so much better than Pens fans by outlining how much more respectful you’re going to treat Hossa than Pens fans do hating on the guy.
I don’t need to hear any justifications about how a few other guys from Detroit haven’t been welcomed back poorly by the Detroit fans, thanks. The Pens have lost other players that come back into the arena without being hated on: Kovalev, Naslund, Lang, Recchi, Zubov, Kaspar, heck I don’t even know if Nedved got that much booing and he REALLY dicked us around. Jagr and Hossa are pretty much it. Jagr is pretty justified, and I actually have some qualms with Jagr that have nothing to do with hockey. Hossa didn’t deserve what he got from our fans. True he insinuated he would take less to stay with the Pens, but that was the PC thing to say at the time and I’m not going to hold it against him. I’d rather joke about how bad he is at making decisions after how this year turned out than hate on him for leaving the Pens.
Finally, for anyone who “doesn’t understand Hossa’s decision”. What’s not to understand? He wants the money. He took his year without the big contract to try and win the cup. Detroit didn’t deliver, not that he helped much in the Finals himself. Do you really expect the guy to take a contract thats 3m less a year than he can get on the open market? Last year was different. We’re talking 3m/year over 10 years less here, as opposed to last year where he took about 2m less over the course of one year. Although in hindsight that was also a big financial mistake since now he’ll be overjoyed if he gets 7m/year as opposed to 9. When guys like Heatley and Gomez are making 7.5m I fail to see whats so hard about Hossa (a player more talented overall than Heatley and Gomez) not wanting to play for a 4m/year average.
Posted by Patrick D from 83 from Pittsburgh, PA on 07/01/09 at 09:41 AM ET
Anyway, Hossa is a selfish player…whether it’s money, or a championship, or whatever…he went to a team for himself.
He was quoted at least once that he wanted to learn from the organization and vets in Detroit. Cheli even told him straight from the get go (and I’m paraphrasing) “don’t come here just to win.”
He didn’t care about the Penguins, he doesn’t care about the Red Wings (if he leaves, of course).
That “if he leaves” bit would kinda invalidate your theory eh?
Sure, it’s likely he’s gone. But I don’t think he’s in it exclusively to ride coattails to a cup, or for the big payday. I think like anyone else, he wants to earn it, and he want’s respect and the value that comes with his talent. I don’t blame him a bit.
Wish it had worked out better. Things don’t always work out. Best of luck. He’ll always be welcome in Detroit.

You still never know…
Maybe Hossa sees a few offers on the FA market and after a few days figures 40 mill with a good team is worth more than 60 mill with a borderline team. I can’t imagine not reflecting on the last four teams I’ve played for, and realizing that I had the best time with a team offering me a 10 year contract.
I often have a hard time imagining signing a FA that hasn’t played for your team for more than a year or two. But then again, I could see myself worrying more about being happy somewhere than worrying about another 20 million. I live on a regular 5 figure salary like most people just fine, and I don’t see how living on 7 million a year instead of 6 million translates into any different type of lifestyle. I know these are pro athletes we’re talking about, but it has to be important to be somewhere you like. Thus, no one (well, none of the 19) blames Hoss for turning down an offer to potentially be under Michelle for multiple years.
Posted by MarkK from Maryland on 07/01/09 at 09:47 AM ET
I think whether or not Hossa takes a larger dollar amount elsewhere depends upon who is offering it. think about it this way - showing that he is willing to take less to go to a contender could have actually reduced his market value because teams feel they can dangle the “come here and win” carrot in front of him.
I don’t see him going to the highest bidder - I see him going somewhere that the contract is somewhere in the middle of the Wings offer and the highest bidder…combined with a reasonable chance of success.
all year I felt like Hossa (unlike Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Franzen) is the kind of player who is better when the weight is on his shoulders, when he is the one who has to do it all himself. that’s not how it is in Detroit.
a lot of people talk about how few real contenders there are out there, especially ones that could afford him. but how many teams are on the cusp, have some young players, and Hossa would put them into contention?
I know they have their own cap issues, but imagine for a second Hossa ending up somewhere like Chicago. they would be an immediate threat.

We don’t need to justify it, we hold this truth to be self-evident. This is just another example of what LONG TERM fans are capable of doing. We know why you people we upset with Mr. Hossa, you had been watching Pen(i)s hockey for AT LEAST 2 whole years (play-offs not included after Ottawa took you out in ‘07), and you got a super-star that was going to end the drought of “wait…they’ve won it before right?” And then you lost. And your mercenary left for greener pastures. Turns out, he didn’t even know how classy the Detroit organ-i-zation was when he signed on. Sadly, it doesn’t look like Detroit has enough cap room to keep him, oh well. We thank him for a great season. No temper tantrums, no anger. We get enough of that from you whining b!tches who still feel the need to come on here and justify yourselves. Keep trying…by all means, keep trying.

If Hossa rejects the Red Wings long-term offer and leaves for another team, anything that was said about him coming here to “learn” or “play with experienced leaders” is null and void.
Actually, maybe it’s not. But if it isn’t, it is STILL him being selfish. “I wanted to learn.” “I wanted the Cup.” “I want more money.”
It has nothing to do with being a Red Wing, or at least it doesn’t seem like it.

Be patient, and don’t get blindsided.
There was a lot of talent that went unsigned last year, and the future was a little brighter then.
The market is still adjusting to the parameters set by the CBA and little gary’s wealth distribution mandates. When next years salary cap is announced…2009-10 may become the ‘good old days’.
