Next entry: Here’s What We Do: Live Blogging A Day That Will Probably Be Uneventful For The Wings

Previous entry: Only 48 More Tuesdays Without The Cup…Better Hurry Hoss

Well Hoss…Catch You On The Flip Side?

As I predicted early and often, it looks as though Marian Hossa isn’t going to sign with the Wings.

I mean, he turned down a decade from Tick Tock, so obviously a deal’s not in the cards, right?

Not so fast says Craig Custance.

...the possibility of a deal still exists.

An NHL source told SportingNews.com late Tuesday night that discussions between the two sides will continue.

It’s not an issue of either side wanting to get a deal completed, it’s a matter of finding common ground. The Red Wings would like to keep Hossa at a annual salary cap number in the $4 million range, which would be considerably less than he’d earn on the open market.

Personally? I think the chances are very, very slim.  Khan(!) used the term “non-negotiable” in the story linked above.  As in 4/year…take it or leave it.

So, despite my consistent guarantees that Hossa would stay a Wing through 2020 or so, I’m betting he’s gone.  Too much money to be had.

If indeed Hossa goes for the cash, heads to LA, Edmonton, Montreal…any number of teams who have lots of money but little hope of short-term success?  Well, then good luck.  We respect the fact that he left millions on the table last year to play for a Cup with the best team in hockey.  He rolled the dice, lost and is now going to apparently move on.  He gave us a great year, 40 goals, all his effort and that’s the most we can ask of him or any player.

If Hoss leaves, takes the money and scampers?  Now you have a choice.  All 19 of us do.  You can either throw empties at him as he leaves and bitch like a Pens fan about being “betrayed”, or we can thank the guy for taking a chance and playing hard.  I choose the latter.

Pittsburgh fans whined for twelve months about Hossa leaving.  In a lot of ways, the way they cried after he left defined them and the bitterness never went away.  Still today, after winning a Cup, they can’t let it go.  Hossa’s a good guy.  He just didn’t want to play in Pittsburgh.  What a crime.

Now it appears that he would rather leave the best organ-I-zation in all of sports for a lot more money.  Same situation?  Similar.  He left for hockey reasons last year.  He’s leaving, if he goes, now because he can’t turn down the money Ritch (that’s how he spells his name is) Winter has convinced him will be out there.  And it’s hard to quibble about that, about not wanting to walk away from as much as 3 million more per year.

If this is it, Marian?  Thanks for the good year.  You’re welcome back in Detroit any time.  When you do come back into town take note of how you’re greeted and how that differs from the way you were treated when you returned to Pittsburgh.  Take note of how the fans welcome you back and of what the Wing players say about you when you’re gone.  At that point you’ll see how one franchise is classy and the other? Not so much

We don’t need to justify it, we hold this truth to be self-evident.  This is just another example of what LONG TERM fans are capable of doing.  We know why you people we upset with Mr. Hossa, you had been watching Pen(i)s hockey for AT LEAST 2 whole years (play-offs not included after Ottawa took you out in ‘07)

Great retort to a post that has me mentioning guys like Robert Lang and Darius Karparitis and Markus Naslund.  Since every Pen fan has only been on ship for 2 years, I guess I just looked their names up on Wikipedia to use in a random hockey blog post.  That’s about as integral a retort as a Pens fan joking about you being unemployed.  Congrats.

Anyway, if its so self evident whats the need to be posting about it in hockey blogs and pointing it out in your comments?  I already said Hossa got jobbed by the fans here, but the mutual admiration you guys are throwing around about how well you’re going to treat Hossa is throwing out so much smugness I think I need a gasmask.

You guys (wings fans) are pretty arrogant, you lost four out of the last five games in a SCF series and you can still muster up the nerve to call yourselves,  “the best team in hockey”?

If you really have as much class as you claim, you would congratulate the penguins on a well fought series and stop making excuses. Injuries happen, and anybody who complains about officiating…stop embarrassing yourselves.

Marian Hossa left a bitter taste in all Pens fans mouths, completely different situation here. He left the pens to play for you but that wasn’t it, his quote saying that Detroit gave him the better chance to win is what really enraged us (because we knew it was true based on last years SCF). Good thing our players never thought it was.

The Pens proved Hossa wrong so he’s basically dead to me now, wish him the best somewhere in the Western Conference. And to the other pens fan who said booing Jagr was justified, i felt embarrassed every time our fans did that. Jagr is still my favorite player.

Peace Wings Nation, good luck next year.

So, you’ve come here to chastise our smugness in how we as fans are treating Hossa well by smugly talking about how well you’ve treated players in the past, while qualifying how burned you were that a player that played ~40 games for you left.  Got it.

I love how Sweaty Teddy Kulfan slides in one sentence at the end of his story this morning, noting the McCarty and Downey are gone.  No major article on the departure of a player important in the run to four Cups.  Thanks, Detroit media!

We got the congratulations out of the way early so we could spend the rest of the summer playing to Penguins fans’ inferiority complexes, thanks.  You have your own blogs to perform autofellatio on your boys all summer long; here, we’re concerned with other things.

I think you missed the part where I said Pens fans have mistreated Hossa.  Pens fans aren’t perfect, I made that much clear.  They’ve done the right thing with other guys, and did the wrong thing with Hossa.

Scanning around here though, it comes off like you guys can do no wrong and you have to make it known.  I tip my hat to you, congratulations.  Detroit Red Wing fans really are the prototype for fanhood perfection.  I don’t know how I would have discovered such a fact without hearing so many of you point it out.

Obviously you have more cups than us, but stop dwelling on the past for 2 minutes and look at the pens team long term. Crosby, Malkin, and Staal have yet to reach there prime. Let that soak in for a minute then tell me how the wings are going to be better than us in the next few years? (assuming we can keep decent role players to fill in gaps)

Or you could just walk away.  A troll who can spell Kasparitus is still a troll.  I think I’d equate you to the Gremlin in the sequel that drank the brain drink and became articulate and wore glasses…you’re still a toad for coming onto a Red Wings blog just to talk up your Pen(i)s.

Just because your Mario #66 jersey was in the closet collecting dust for the Naslund, Lang, Kasparitis years, doesn’t mean you were still a fan.

The fact of the matter is (admittedly by your fellow Rosby worshipers), most of the Pen(i)s fans that come on here are complete idiots with little or no knowledge of hockey.  So keep beating your chest if you want to, I’ll keep being smug.  You’re not the first troll, nor will you be the last.  We, the 19, will simply wait you out as we have done in to countless others in the past.

I think we got that whole feeling embarrassed thing out of the way in the mid-90’s.  Being successful consistently in the WC is something to be proud of.  How many SC finalists/ eventual cup winners had to beat Detroit to get there in the last 2 decades?

Especially the manner in which it happened, but the extra cap space ended up working in the Pens’ favor.  All fans are doing now is gloating and rubbing it in.  Is it not okay to poke a little fun after winning the cup?

I don’t think thats the correct Kasparitis spelling either.  I think there’s a u or extra i in there somehere as well, but it sounded like it enough to me.

I really don’t care if you think I’m a troll either, I haven’t posted on here since the finals ended til now.  The big celebration is over and I’m ready to start exploring next season again.  Free agency is about to begin and I’m scanning team blogs.  I apologize for trying to read info on how the fan’s feel about a Hossa team next year or a Hudler/Samuellson team next year.

And TDeters is right, we have to give some recognition to D-Mac for all his contributions to the four Cups. And to Conk for a fine regular season and making (unless he goes to the Dive, in which case that becomes more difficult). And to Downey for fighting Laperriere that one time, which was awesome even if Lappy/Lap Dance/Laplander (hey, I’m trying) becomes a Wing.

Self-admiration happens on any blog with a group of regulars over the course of many months and years.  Find one that fits those criteria that has none, then come back and complain again.  We discussed the appropriate response to a given event (Hossa leaving) and say “we don’t want to look like those guys”.

Hey 19.
Thought I’d better check-in.
My month of mourning has ended.
Time to suck it up and move on.
After careful meditation since 612 “Hello Summer” the reality of the Detroit Red Wings STILL being the best professeional hockey organization, top to bottom, has brought me much comfort. Now begins the opportunity, the challenge, the quest to reclaim the prize, the ulitmate of all sports’ crowns. And my confidence is very sure that we will keep our heads held high as the task before us turns into a plan to succeed. And that plan is carefully, analytically, masterfully being developed by Tick Tock, Uncle Mike, ... you know the men we trust. Be assured they will place the best team possible on the ice for the ‘09-‘10 season!
Is it October yet?

GO WINGS!!!

I let the last 1/4 of the article get the better of me when I made that comment yes.  Caught me off guard when I was reading the post about Hossa not resigning and then saw all that stuff about being better than Pens fans.

I probably should have not mentioned it much the same as Wings fans don’t need to be mentioning what I pointed out.

Awesome, look at all the hate already in the comments here. As long as we’re all throwing cheap shots at each other, here’s mine:

As best I recall, Hossa is looking for someone to give him a long term deal so he can move there, settle down, and raise his family. Why on earth would you want to do that in Detroit? (K there’s my unnecessary hate quota)

As for Pens fans, the smarter among us have realized that Hossa leaving for Detroit gave us the money to re-sign Malkin, Fleury, Staal, and Orpik. Plus, Bill Guerin solved the winger issue and we got him for mud. And the Pens won the Cup, so it’s hard to say anyone else had a better season.

We’ll see you guys next year.

Go Pens.

I don’t know where this idea that Hossa turned down more money to play with the Red Wings began.  It’s a fallacy.  The one year deal offered to Hossa by the Wings was equal to the amount of money Hossa would have made this season as a Penguin.  There’s a serious delusion here that Hossa did something noble by playing for the Wings this season for only 7 million bucks.

The plan from the beginning for Hossa was to play one year with the Wings and then sign a huge deal somewhere.  He was possibly hoping to win a Cup, but he was probably more interested in padding his stats and cashing in this summer.  What he didn’t count on was being an Invisible Man in the playoffs and the utter collapse of the economy.

If it all had really been about a Stanley Cup, he would have resigned with the Penguins for ten years.  He would have been playing with Crosby, and you have to think he would have eventually gotten there on that team.  (I know I know, the Cup is only on vacation when it’s not in Detroit, whatever.  In the real world, teams do not repeat all that often, and the Penguins have a huge window in front of them.)

You just got snubbed - better word is used. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. The rest of the hockey world is laughing at you and has been since Game 7. Give Hossa a standing ovation when he comes back, laughable. Nah, won’t happen. Classy fans in Detroit? Nah, can you even fill your building? They aren’t lining up anymore - players or fans.

You act as if Hossa had some allegiance to Detroit. Laughable. Hossa cares about Hossa, as well he should. But, in you arrogance, you think that every hockey player dreams of playing in Detroit. Funny stuff. Do you really think Hossa will look back on his career and even think about Detroit? If that was the case, he takes your deal. Nah. His bank account thanks you. Did he lay it on the line for you. Nah.

I can’t wait to watch Hossa actually perform for Chicago in the playoffs next year. Welcome to a long stretch of mediocrity Detroit. Get over yourself. I guess you no longer offered the best chance for Hossa to win the Cup. I heard that the stores in Detroit couldn’t keep those Kleenex limited edition Red Wings boxes on the shelves. Maybe you can sign Toews or Kane next year.

Go Hawks!

“The 2009 Stanley Cup does not the best team in hockey make.”

Posted by jennyquarx on 07/01/09 at 08:53 AM ET

Sorry, winning the Stanley Cup generally earns you that title for the year.
Just like going 0-16 makes the Lions the worst team in pro football last year.  And, seeing as Tampa Bay only went 0-14 in 1976, it can be argued that the 2008 Lions were the worst NFL team ever.  Sorry, Detroit fans….tough year.

You can argue all you want that the Wings are better than the Pens.  Maybe they really are, but I’ve heard that argument from Caps fans for about 15 years now despite losing 7 of 8 playoff series to the Pens since 1991.  When you lose, it’s better to accept it, and just say, “the better team won.”

Some of you Detroit folks need therapy to get over the shock of losing Game 7.  The Wings lost…no big deal…it happens.  You just weren’t prepared for it, and neither were the players.  Never seemed to cross their minds that they could lose Game 7 on home ice.  Draper’s comments about Crosby and the handshake line reflect a classy older player looking for someone to blame for something that went so unexpectedly wrong for his team.  Sid should have led the line, but he just got caught up in the moment.  He’s a pretty young guy - certainly not intentional disrespect.  I imagine he respects just about every player on the Wings roster, even if they don’t respect him for some reason.

The Pens and Wings are both great.  As a Pens fan, this Cup means much more than the previous two back in the early 90’s because they beat a truly superb team in the finals.  They play a complete brand of hockey that those earlier teams did not.  Just like the Wings, everyone on the roster gets back and plays solid D, and even the star players muck in the corners and in front of the net.  And both the Pens and Wings are capable of the brilliant end-to-end rushes.

Both teams have a lot to be proud of ...another go-round in 2010 would be truly awesome to see.

Now see…  I’ll be the first to admit that booing Hossa makes the fans look bad, and bitter. Having the cash to see Detroit once (96?, maybe), I am not one of them.

The situation in Pittsburgh and in Detroit are not the same. Word is that Hossa had a deal in place in Pittsburgh that he agreed to, and then backed out of it - calling Detroit only right before he was to sign. It left Ray Shero in a position of needing to find a first line winger and all he could get was Satan and Fedotenko as it happened after the FA period began.

As much as I like Hossa as a player, word (again) was that if they signed him, Malkin would be as good as gone. Certainly Orpik wouldn’t have singed, and Staal would be traded as early as last season.

So you can suck one like the rest of ‘em.

wow nice story, maybe you should have taken off your red colored glasses before you wrote this and took shots at pens fans.  Maybe you should have a better understanding of the situation before you go out of your way making yourself look like a clown, pens fans are bitter?  whiney bitches? seriously???  So your telling me if a player came to detroit at the trade deadline this past season, and they still LOST TO PITTSBURGH, and that player said “Ill stay here for less money because I love it”  then weeks later spits in your face and says “im going to pittsburgh so I can win a cup”,    you all and mighty “classy” wings fans wouldnt get sweaty about that? give me a break, if you say no, than your only trying to kid yourself, its not the fact that he left pitt its the fact he said hed stay for less money then jumped on the detroit bus because he figured he could get handed the stanley cup, respect him all you want, but that makes him a bitch in my eyes.

Pretty easy for you to say “oooo I respect hossa and thanks for your 40 goals”, yeah no shit, how can you fault a guy for thinking your team WAS better than the pens?? ya cant, so dont pretend like your taking the high road you freakin clown.

Talk about the most classiest and best organization you say?  Yeah you guys are so classy, when you finally lose your fans cant even give credit when credit is due, the pens beat your asses 4-3, won the cup, and you clowns BITCH and WHINE about bettman giving the pens the cup? what a joke, wings fans are nothing but spoiled bitches, have fun going down hill, because now that your pre-salary cap team is now falling apart you wont have to blame gary for your team losing.

flyer fans are the biggest pieces of shit, caps fans are 2nd, and wings fans are the most hipocritical.  You talk about how classy you are and “WE WOULD NEVER BOO HOSSA!!!, even if he said hed stay and went to the pens and said they were better” still wouldnt boo him!!, lol what a joke, you guys are clowns, “why would we boo a player? thats so disrespectful!”    riiiiiiiiiiiiight but you guys can cheer when the best player on the ice gets hurt (crosby)  and you guys boo when the highest honor (the cup) is presented to another team, and you guys come up with conspiracy stories when you clowns lose, WOW WHAT A CLASSY ORGANIZATION, CAN I BE A PART OF IT!?
