AlanaH breaks it at the Empire Home Page, with some help from TSN.
All Wing signings and commentary will begin and end with this post. It’s a UFA live blog is what it is.
Updated 1545: Wings sign a backup. Riveting commentary below.
Updated 1613: Well bitches. Tucker’s a Dive. I’ve always hated that bastard.
Updated 1800: With Devo’s signing (just made it up. Figure it out. Read below) for 750 and Ozzie making 1.4 next year? The Wings are committed to just over two million for a pair of goalies who could arguably be referred to as top ten in the league last season. Chicago? Just under 12 million for Huet and Khabibulin. Forget comparing the two sets of tenders. Dale Tallon or Ken Holland? No choice, eh?
Stuart: likes the team. Likes, yes, likes the town. Likes the stability. Likes cracking skulls with his new pal Nik. Unexpected happiness brought to you by Tick Tock Kenny Holland.
Conklin: Holy jumpin’ what a steal. Conklin for 750? Are you frigging kidding me? One thing’s for sure. Jimmy’s a Griff for at least one more year. Something a little more subtle: he may never see any consistent time in Detroit. Ever.
Ok. Look. I’m not into the juvenile creations of genitalic references to our new backup goalie.
But I will say this. Chris Osgood’s only starting four against Columbus this year.
Because we all know what’s expected when the BJs come to town. That’s right bitches. Time to whip the Conk out.
What? Me? Sorry. Jeez.

I really like the idea of Owen Liam Nolan on the Wings.
No to Stillwoozi. He’s done.
Sorry Chief, I can play the piano, and I am extremely happy for Ozzie too, but I don’t think Kenny is going to call me anytime soon.

Auld to the Ottawa for 1 mil.
Poor guy never played for a team with great defense, and once again he’ll be left naked in the crease.

If you have read Chief’s updates at the “Header” of this thread you no longer wonder why we pride ourselves in juvenile, immature, 7th grade gym class humor.
And all I wanted was to go 5 hole on this. And I will put my mouth where my money is.

Kolzig settles for 1.5 to play for Melrose..?
I’m thinking Kenny never made an offer.
The Conk will do just fine, maybe better.
Best guess is he wants to play in the SCF.
Pittsburgh denied him even one game and he knows it will be a long time before they get there again.

He did score around 50 points in something like 68 games last year, not great, but not terrible.
It was only 40 points.
The man is a surly, irritable, fragile, easily-injured floating waste of metabolic activity. No.
If the team gets that desperate for a big forward they can convert Ericksson back - I’ll bet he could get 40 points and wouldn’t get hurt as much.

If the idea is to sign an older, veteran forward, Rolston and Nolan are two guys who bring a lot both on and off the ice. Dallas Drake kind of guys, if you will. Rolston is the better two-way player and gives you another point guy on the PP, while Nolan is the more hard-a**ed of the two.
However, I was lobbying on a different thread this morning for the similarly sized and extremely fast Nick Hagman, who was one of the Stars who showed up for that series. He’s 28, compared to 35 for Rolston and 36 for Nolan, is defensive oriented with a scoring touch (17 and 27 goals the past two years), and would be quite an addition getting setup on another scoring/checking line with his fellow Finn Filppula. He could probably be had for closer to $3M/yr as opposed to the $4-5M range that Rolston will cost.
Signing a guy like Hagman this year, I’d be more inclined to concentrate solely on Zetterberg and Franzen next year while letting Hudler walk if he so chose.

Doesn’t matter to me..
Nolan
Rolston
Hagman
Any one would be fine, but they have to come at a very big discount...to play for their name on our cup.
and
Um…
Where are all the Big Names??
Campbell to the Hawks for 7.1..
Aah..Nevermind

I can speak as to Hagman, I get to watch a lot of Stars games down here. The kid has talent no doubt, but I think he has very limited upside potential. He doesn’t show the hockey smarts that the Stars org expected, which is why he saw more limited ice time as the season (especially the playoffs) progressed. Tippett wasn’t happy with his production, so he sat. I’d compare him to Hudler. He’s going to get his goals, but they are not going to come consistently, certainly not a top 6, probably not even top 9 guy for the Wings.
The Rolston stakes got a little too rich. That sucks.

Just this side of Toronto, duh.
Posted by rwingscup19 from Dallas on 07/01/08 at 06:02 PM ET
I viewed Hagman more as an affordable ($3M/yrX4 is about right, especially the way money is being thrown around today) bigger, faster replacement for Hudler, who I still wouldn’t be surprised to be odd man out next year.
Desperation is New Jersey ($5M is too much for Rolston in 4 years) while insanity, that would be Chicago.
Outright stupidity looks to be Colorado this time around.
Posted by BobS. on 07/01/08 at 06:20 PM ET
Well, no Rolston. That’s a shame.
Howabout Naslund? 2 years at $3 sound about right?

You can’t Conkblock us, bitches. Get your own name.
I presume that contract is one-way?
He earned it. And it’s hard to think of a place where he’ll get more playing time.
And if you guys get the outdoor game this year....Ty Conklin, man of destiny (and potential to make CF for 4th straight year w/4th different team), what can I say.
My heart is broken. And the irony may kill me. But it’s nice to see you appreciate what you got. At least you righted some karmic balance with your goalies there.
Replacing Dominik Hasek is...Ty Conklin. That’s just awesome.

This year - campaigning for Darcy Tucker
Posted by Dave on 07/01/08 at 07:56 PM ET
So who’s in the lead right now for the Tavares sweepstakes? I’m guessing Los Angeles. They gave away their best offensive defenseman for absolutely nothing.
Posted by Dave on 07/01/08 at 08:00 PM ET
Holland gave his “to-do” list earlier today after the Stuart signing:
“We’re still looking for a back-up goalie. If we can find a forward on a short-term deal to fill out our needs, great. But will that be this week or later in the summer, who knows.”
Back-up goalie - check.
Forward on a short term deal - pending.
TSN.ca has a list of the big names.
Wings can’t play the Hossa sweepstakes—he wants big money and big term. However, both Jagr and Sundin are “short term” candidates. Be interesting to see just how interested they are in having a legit Cup run.
Right now, the Wings are sporting their exact roster from the Cup win, less Hasek.
Add a top-flight Forward to the mix—gotta like those chances. Sundin has never won the “holy grail”—that has got to sell. Jagr hasn’t hoisted the Cup since 1992 (his second season in the league). Either might be mightily tempted to “make a run.”
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 07/01/08 at 08:06 PM ET
Holland said a forward. He did not say a top flight Forward. Wings can’t give enough ice time to another top flight forward. They need a mucker who brings attitude and can kill penalties. Top that off with he must come at a discount. If we go into the season with what we have, even missing Fil… the Wings will be fine. More ice time for the development of the youngsters.
Posted by HockeyTownTodd from upset when blogs dont live up to my expectations on 07/01/08 at 08:21 PM ET
Yeah. Replacing Dominik Hasek as Chris Osgood’s “backup” is Ty Conklin!
It’s still Ty Conklin and Dominik Hasek in the same sentence.
...so does this mean that the Hasek car of stress or whatever is now on the Conktrain?
Posted by nu on 07/01/08 at 08:43 PM ET
Filppula isn’t going anywhere.
While a few of the Big Names are still out there, this has been a very good day for the Wings up to now. Not only did they get Stuart at a reasonable price, they got the back-up goalie they wanted at an exceptional bargain.
At the same time, not only has much of the available talent gone to the East, it’s come from many of this years Western Conference playoff teams. Chicago is the only conference team that has upgraded (albeit in a somewhat lunatic fashion), and they were going to be better anyway as their young talent matured. It’s obvious they have to do something about the money pit that is the goaltending position however. Speaking of Chicago, anyone think Jason Williams is worth a second look in Detroit?
Posted by BobS. on 07/01/08 at 08:54 PM ET
@ Bob
No, I don’t see Williams coming back to Detroit. Sammy is more than capable of bungling his position on the point of the second power play unit. He has adequately filled J-Will’s skates in that regard.
Williams’ production last season was due largely to a lot of solid offensive talent in Chicago, particularly on the power play. Hmm, I think I can see St. Louis signing him. Williams and Manny will provide the St. Louis scribes with all sorts of “inside information” on the Red Wings’ locker room.

he’d certainly be looking for a short-term contract, relatively cheap
Posted by Alex from San Francisco on 07/01/08 at 09:55 PM ET
After all I’ve read here today, and all the pros and cons stated for whom and for how long, I think the Wings should absolutely sign Nolan Owen (if he’s available). Veteran, mucho hungry for the Cup, will come at a reasonable price and will perform whatever role he’s asked to take. I see him as (potentially) a more offensive Dallas Drake. I will accept that gladly.
Posted by Mike from La-La Land on 07/01/08 at 09:59 PM ET
My thoughts on a few possibilities still out there (only one can come):
Mats Sundin—Definitely yes (not a “mucker,” but c’mon; also his agent said he isn’t just looking at money)
Owen Nolan—Definitely yes
Georges Laraque—Interesting (would take Downey out of picture unless he signed for GR)
Jarkko Ruutu—Maybe (still my favorite STAR WARS character)
Brendan Shanahan—No thanks (he said his time here had passed, not me)
Todd Bertuzzi—Please God NO!
Plus, signing Laraque or Ruutu would give the Wings the distinct honor of joining the Lightning in their efforts to pillage the Penguins.

Confusing. Please illustrate with appropriate examples, or kindly go away until you can make sense within the thread of conversation.
Sundin - If he wasn’t looking so much at money before, a $20 million rumoured offer from the Canucks might change that. Good lord.
Shanahan - Way past his prime and not interested in coming back. He wanted to move on, and that’s fantastic, and I wish him luck.
Bertuzzi - I would rather poke myself in the eye with a sharp stick. NO.
Laraque - Interesting. No strong feelings one way or the other.
Nolan - That could easily work. He wouldn’t be expected to be a major scorer as he has with other teams, and would be more effective in a more limited role.
Jarko Ruutu - I wouldn’t mind that, actually. Some players I just plain don’t like, no matter who they play for, but he is in the camp of “like him if he is on your team, hate him if he is on an opponent.” I could live with that. Although if he had a run-in with Jordin Tootoo I worry about the announcers that would get their tongues tangled up trying to call that encounter.
Anyone else a little surprised that Hossa hasn’t signed yet? Not even a peep.

With the Avs’ signing of Darcy Tucker Tuesday afternoon, the spirit of Lemieux will rise again in Denver.

Likes cracking skulls with his new pal Nik.
Yeah, the second pairing is going to be fun to watch next year, provided Kronner can keep his sacrum healthy. And they’ll keep at least a few cheap-shotters in line. Fear the Hurtymen!
Seriously though, I’m still surprised by the signing. He signed around 11:30-- thirty minutes before he would have become a UFA. WHAT is that about? If he’d decided to stay, I would have thought he’d have signed earlier, if he’d decided to go (which I thought he had), he would have waited another half-hour. Very strange, to ignore the contract then sign at the dead-last minute. Still, I’m glad he did, and he’s good value too-- just look at how much money was thrown at Campbell, Redden, Rozsival and so on. Mad crazy. Ah well, at least now we can feel comfortable giving him an affectionate nickname. Suggestions? I’m not too sure about ‘Stewie.’ How about ‘Rocky?’ Chief, I’m looking in your direction…
And the Conklin signing is the Tick-Tock Man’s left-field move. HOW he got that kind of quality for that cheap amazes me. I mean, he and Malkin carried the Pens when Crosby and Fleury were out, and got them to that #2 seed in the East. He really could thrive with us this year. I understand that Kenny wants Howard to be THE dominant goalie in the AHL, putting them all to shame before bringing him up, and I suspect he’ll do just that. So then he can back up Ozzie next year, platoon with him the year after, then take over the starting job when Ozzie retires. But what of Larsson? Coming over to the AHL only to be the backup for the Griffs? But Conklin...he must be looking for that Cup again-- Pittsburgh last year, Edmonton and Buffalo before then...either that or he’s looking for ANOTHER spot in the Winter Classic. This guy just keeps turning up everywhere important. I did like this quote from the Pittsburgh Gazette: “Should Osgood have any issues, Conklin can step in and deal with the 12 shots a game Red Wings goaltenders usually face.”
So Tucker’s gone and joined the Dive. Jesus. He’s going to be even more of an insufferable bitch this year. I told you I hated seeing him, and that’s why I wanted him on our team. Ah well. I guess that’s why we’re going after Bertuzzi. Think of it...a fourth line of Downey-D-Mac-Bertuzzi next year for Dive and Poultry games. Erm, maybe not. In any case, the Nolan comments are right on-- I’d rather have him as our Drake-by-proxy, and not just so’s I can break out the orange sash, fife, and Lambeg drum whenever he hits the ice.
Raycroft and Tucker to the Av’s.
Both overpaid.
Not sure I follow you, Gramps. Tucker is being slightly overpaid (not by much, just by the UFA market premium), but Raycroft is coming pretty cheap if he can resurrect some of his old form. Behind that Avs defense, maybe not, but still, 700K isn’t too bad.
Looks like we’re conserving cap space to re-sign all the UFAs. Don’t want anyone to poach Filppula-- I think he’ll get 2-3 million if he signs for around three years, as a Zetterberg-in-the-making. Still, that offer sheet for Backes scares me. An offer sheet this early?
Los Angeles. They gave away their best offensive defenseman for absolutely nothing.
Yeah, but they may still have Blake, and they’ve still got Preissing and Jack Johnson up-and-coming. That’s a decent defense corps. My money’s on Tampa’s paper-thin defense propelling them to the top of the sweepstakes once again. But can you imagine Stamkos and Tavares on the same line in 09-10? Like Toews & Kane on crystal meth. Scary.
I’m still worried by what’s going to happen with our younger D. I guess the organization is confident they can get Ericsson signed with term, so that he can play on the top pairing for the Griffs, which really is the best place for him-- as long as we don’t lose him. And then there’s the guys who aren’t waiver-free. George suggests that Quincey could be sent down on waivers, and that he might clear. I’m not so sure, but this is George Malik we’re talking about, not Dwayne Klessel. Then I guess we’d go with the same defense we had last season. I’d just rather not lose Quincey either-- I’d just as soon see Lebda traded and Quincey get third-pairing ice time on the Wings.
And it looks like the Tick-Tock Man never made offers for Rolston or Kolzig. Rolston I can understand; the bidding got too rich for his blood. But Kolzig? Criminal not to offer him what he got from Tampa.
On the other hand, it’s criminal what the Caps gave Joe-Ted to replace Huet. I’d say that he wanted to head as far away from Detroit as possible, but really, would ANYBODY turn down $4.5 million a year after being chased out of the net in three out of four games of a playoff semifinal sweep? Man. He must have a fairy godmother or something.
No big trade-deadline splash from the Ducks this season-- they have virtually NO cap space left. The Hawks are actually ABOVE the cap what with having greater than twelve million sitting in their crease. Trades are a-comin’. Way to handcuff yourself for the future when Kane & Toews are demanding big-time raises, Tallon. Way to screw the long-suffering fans yet again.
And finally, I found this tidbit, a special treat for Captain America: “Chelios will have the Cup on July 4th in Los Angeles.” Cheli, celebrating with the Cup on The Fourth. We couldn’t have it any other way.

I’m not surprised on Hossa at all. What’s baffling is that the bulk of the talk on Hossa is that the Oilers are in the front running for him. That seems a bit ridiculous to me, perhaps its just TSN homering for him.

Dumbest comment ever in that article:
Hopefully the Avs will begin a steroids program just like Detroit did last year. HGH will do the Tucks and Foppa just fine if you know what I mean, Wing Dings!
Uh...what? This guy must be confusing Human Growth Hormone (NOT a steroid) with cortisone (a steroid). I think. Medical science is not Denver’s strong suit, I see.
he is in the camp of “like him if he is on your team, hate him if he is on an opponent.”
Exactly why I wanted Tucker, Baroque. The Chelios Corollary. Still, I could see it working with Jarkko Ruutu. “Ruutu! Tootoo! Ruutu! Tootoo!” It’d make a great chant at games against Bubba.
Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from the street, hepped up on goofballs on 07/02/08 at 05:02 AM ET
I’m not really surprised by Hossa. He’s got time to wait to see how many Fendi bags full of cash GMs will throw at him. The GMs, in turn, are all waiting for the first bid to see where it’ll start. What kind of range in which they’re expected to bid. Nobody wants to set the bar too high. And if Sundin’s been offered ten million, well...Hossa could reasonably expect to command that much, if not the cap max. So who wants to blow the team and NHL payscales out of all proportion? Let’s watch.
