Well Lookee Here…Stuart Signs For Four With Wings

AlanaH breaks it at the Empire Home Page, with some help from TSN.

All Wing signings and commentary will begin and end with this post. It’s a UFA live blog is what it is.

Updated 1545: Wings sign a backup.  Riveting commentary below.

Updated 1613: Well bitches. Tucker’s a Dive.  I’ve always hated that bastard.

Updated 1800: With Devo’s signing (just made it up. Figure it out. Read below) for 750 and Ozzie making 1.4 next year? The Wings are committed to just over two million for a pair of goalies who could arguably be referred to as top ten in the league last season.  Chicago?  Just under 12 million for Huet and Khabibulin. Forget comparing the two sets of tenders.  Dale Tallon or Ken Holland? No choice, eh?

Stuart:  likes the team. Likes, yes, likes the town. Likes the stability.  Likes cracking skulls with his new pal Nik.  Unexpected happiness brought to you by Tick Tock Kenny Holland.

Conklin: Holy jumpin’ what a steal.  Conklin for 750? Are you frigging kidding me?  One thing’s for sure.  Jimmy’s a Griff for at least one more year.  Something a little more subtle:  he may never see any consistent time in Detroit.  Ever.

Ok. Look. I’m not into the juvenile creations of genitalic references to our new backup goalie.

But I will say this.  Chris Osgood’s only starting four against Columbus this year.

Because we all know what’s expected when the BJs come to town. That’s right bitches.  Time to whip the Conk out.

What?  Me? Sorry. Jeez.

Cheli’s coming back, no worries. If nothing else, to prove to the next crop of kids he’ll out work’em, I mean how to train off the ice.
In regards to Torres, here’s to Downey slapping him around like he did Lappy… twice in Dive land. Mac seems to have sort of lost his ability to be the long arm of the law, but I loved seeing him start out southpaw and then switch to fighting as a righty. Quite a few faces met that first left..... ah the good ol days. Time to youtube Mac n the Turtle.

I am finishing up some credits for my law degree. I am actually heading to Stockholm for the upcoming weekend and will be very thankful for the cooler weather. I also will surely be talking with some locals about the Wings as I imagine there are quite a few fans in those parts. Wouldn’t mind a run-in with Z and his hot model girlfriend either…

Andrew, you think going back to MI is bad? When I leave Europe in August and head back to LA, I deal with a 9 hour difference. Messes you up for weeks.

Tootoo was pretty invisible as long as Drake dressed for the game....that is why we need Tucker, or Nolan.

Or have his water bottle spiked with amoebic dysentery.  Cruel, but effective!

I have to say I’m shocked nothing has happend with Rolston yet. It must mean there are a lot of competing offers coming in for him and his agent to pour over.

Come on, Brian, this is a no-brainer. You know you want to come home to Michigan. Your know your kid will get all the training he needs in the junior hockey programs around Detroit. So what’s the hold-up here? Get out your pen and tell Kenny you’ll take his offer. Please?

And I’d forgotten about the backup goalie.  Modest one-year deal for Kolzig, or are we all in consensus that he won’t take a backup role?

It’s just been reported Kolzig is “talking” to the Bolts and that the “talks apparently are going well.”

There they go, once again spoiling Miss B’s forwards-only theory. wink

Kulfan hopped on the wagon!  Way to scoop the story, Ted!

Let me sum up the A2Y (and my own) sentiments over this news:  REPEAT!  REPEAT!  WINGS REPEAT!

Wings sign Stuart to 4-year deal
Ted Kulfan / The Detroit News
DETROIT—The Wings have re-signed defenseman Brad Stuart to a four-year, $15-million contract.

Stuart, 28, was acquired at the trade deadline by the Wings from Los Angeles and solidified the Wings’ back end, forming an excellent pairing with Niklas Kronwall. Stuart was set to enter the free-agent market.

The deal was worked out just before the noon start to free agency in the NHL.

Sources tell TSN as many as four teams have tabled offers for the 37 year old (Sundin), including one undisclosed team that has offered a whopping $10 million per year on a multi-year contract.

Ah, I believe that should have been: “...one undisclosed team whose GM has gone temporarily INSANE has offered a whopping $10 million per year on a multi-year contract.” Mind boggling!

Isn’t Folston’s favorite road city New York?  Does anyone else smell Rangers?  They can dump Shanny and pick up a more mobile player who can do more than sit in the dot waiting for a setup.

Can’t believe they got Conklin for that cheap. If he even plays close to what he did last season, it could be stellar. It’d allow Ozzie to play in the neighborhood of 50 games, and stay fresh, sharp, and healthy for the playoffs.

Move over Lilja.....I predict you will be sharing your “team whipping boy” title with Conklin before the Wings are 20 games into the season. We watched him stink in Edmonton in the Cup Finals 3 years ago, we watched him shine in Pittsburgh this past season, so who knows what’s in store.

Incredible.  I love Howard, but how the hell did we steal Conklin for this little salary after the season he had.  He’s a solid 1A or 1B guy on any team.  And he might be #3 for us.

His S% last season was #2 in the league.  He’s an excellent tender.

The funniest thing is that Colorado’s big signing?  ANDREW RAYCROFT.

One more comment, he’s come a LONG way since Edmonton.  I still am stunned that Holland pulled this off and that Conklin didn’t want more money or years.

NO STILLWOOZI.
I seem to remember someone in the Brain Trust saying he’d seen his last days as a Wing last time around, our Brain Trust isn’t much for changing it’s tune. If Stillwoozi was one to be a Wing, he’d have stayed around. Ask Cleary, Drapes, Malts, Nik, Z, Dats et al what being a Wing is. It’s a philosophy and culture Stillwoozi didn’t “get” when he was a 1/2 ass 1/2 healthy Wing.

Kostitsyn RFA w/ Habs $3.5M x 3?  72 games, 53 points, +15..

Val 78 G 36 pts, +16 for Val.

Backes StL offer sheet by VAN 72 G 31 pts -11 = #2.5 M x 3yrs.

Hmmm, how much is it going to cost to keep Val around?  He was more productive than the $2.5 guy but not quite as productive as the $3.5M guy.  Someone could come in and offer him $3.5, more than the Wings expected and 900K more than Zetterberg.

I wouldn’t mind Bert for around 1.5, 2 MAX, with a Wings option for next year.

He did score around 50 points in something like 68 games last year, not great, but not terrible.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y.
