And just as I’m about to head to the airport…I see this.

Some tool at Puck Daddy who isn’t Wyshysnski

More of this drivel is available at Abel to Yzerman (“I’m sure there was discussion about the ‘tired’ remarks and the thoughts from esteemed writers like Helene Elliott, gushing and babbling happily about the ‘end of the Wing dynasty’”).

Please, everyone that isn’t a Detroit fan (i.e. tolerable people): Let us join together to issue a formal apology for ever having believed that anyone that is not the Red Wings would win this Stanley Cup, with a corollary that Chris Osgood(notes) is at least twice as good as Ken Dryden and Little Caesars has the best pizza on the planet.

Not sure what “The Two Line Pass” is up to, what he’s talking about, who he is or who he roots for.  And I don’t have time to deal with him/her/it right now.  Please someone review his literature and let me know if it’s something we should be discussing.

And for the record, I picked the Red Wings to win the Cup back on Oct. 7.

To wit: “This is Detroit’s Stanley Cup to lose. They will probably repeat.” I also picked them to win the regular season. OOOOOOPSSSS!

I’m starting to get really tired of all the bulls⁢I have to wade through on every blog nowadays.  We are no exception.  Ignoring the @ssholes is getting harder to do.  I called out a Pens fan who tried to defend the Vladdy pic and comment only to have someone here wish Mario’s cancer to return.  And he wasn’t being sarcastic or funny.  I defend everyone’s right to freedom of speech but you have to have accountability for that freedom.  You can yell “Fire” in a crowded theater but don’t be surprised if you go to jail.  Some things are just not right.

I fail to see how Wyshynski is to blame for the comment threads over there. This is the Internet, people, and Yahoo! Sports is one of the biggest stages in the place. The vast majority of denizens of the ‘Net are idiots—reasonable comments are by far the exception. Is it really so surprising that the comments on Y! Sports approach YouTube stupidity? Don’t let that detract from the actual content at Puck Daddy, which is generally very good.

Anyone who’s read Greg’s work over the years and knows anything about his fan background knows that he’s no Wings fan. So what? Outside opinions can be refreshing. And he knows the game. I respect the guy, even if I don’t always (read: rarely) agree with him.

I think TLP’s comments were idiotic and purposely inflammatory, but he’s not Wyshynski. That stuff isn’t up to the usual PD standard, which is generally “reasonable serious fan” and not “hardcore homer.”

Per Monty Python, and now for something completely different (but pleasing), The Highlander:

No Dan Cleary on the ice as the Red Wings just started their drills. They’re working, however, as though Cleary will play in Game 6, using Ville Leino as a placeholder. Cleary missed practice time leading into Game 5, including the morning skate, but played in the game. All the other lines are the same with Pavel Datsyuk on Henrik Zetterberg’s wing.

They are all tools over there. Wizdoucheski hates the Wings. But don’t take my word for it, evidence is better than opinion.

Here is WizDoucheSki’s latest Conn Smythe watch after game 5:

1. Evgeni Malkin, Penguins; 2. Sidney Crosby, Penguins; 3. Henrik Zetterberg, Red Wings; 4. Johan Franzen(notes), Red Wings; 5. Nicklas Lidstrom(notes), Red Wings; 6. Marc-Andre Fleury, Penguins; 7. Chris Osgood, Red Wings;

PottedPlant is more deserving of the Conn Smythe than Ozzie? Sh!t, even the pimply-faced, dungeons-and-dragons-loving, basement-dwelling denizens of Pen(i)s blog admit Ozzie has outplayed MAF. They may not admit that Ozzie is a Conn Smythe contender, but they know MAF has been outplayed.

Some highlights:

Watching Detroit crush the Penguins on Saturday night was as fulfilling as anything I have ever witnessed in sports. Even better than when the Red Wings got Roy pulled in that epic Western Conference final Game 7.

The sad part of this story is that Penguins coach Dan Bylsma, a Grand Haven native, never played the game the way his team has played in the finals.

And for the record, I don’t hate the Red Wings, I hate their fans.

The day I start caring about what complete strangers online who are not the A2Y 19 (whom I consider my ‘friends’ anyway, even though I’ve only met the Chief in real life) is the day I give up the Red Wings, beer, and the dizzying heights and crushing lows, and just lay down and die.  As Millwall FC fans say, “No one likes us and we don’t care.”

Pizza Hut dreams of one day becoming as delicious as Little Caesars.

Now Alan, as a born and raised Ann Arborite, I’ll have to take you to task on that.  As good as Little Sleazer’s is (and goddamn there really is nothing like a greasy slice of ‘shrooms, sausage, and extra cheese after half a fifth of whiskey), Cottage Inn still beats it for sheer quality every time.  And I give an honorable mention to Anthony’s stuffed pizza on Packard, but they’re a Chicago import (stuffed pizza being a Chi-town thing) so they don’t count in the battle of Michigan pizza.

But I wish they’d just drop this faux-objectivity that pervades most of their stuff. It’s embarrasssing to watch sometimes.

I have to say, I respect Melt Your Face Off for that reason.  They’re all a bunch of Wings-haters, but they’re funny as hell and they make no bones about objectivity.  American Hockey Fan is like that too, minus the Wings-hate because he’s a B’s fan.  Come to think of it, the best hockey blogs are the ones that combine humor with partisanship, and hence real gritty fans can relate to them.  Leave the ‘objectivity’ to the ‘journalists,’ and get down here in the mud with the rest of us fans.

That being said, I pride myself on A2Y and Snapshots being my only daily must-reads.  If I want important news, I’ll get it from a variety of (purportedly) impartial sources, but I’m a Red Wings fan first and an NHL fan a distant second, so when it comes to hockey, Red Wings sources get most of my limited time.  If I have any extra and I feel like it, I’ll poke my head into the pablum on Puck Daddy and hit the back button before I reach the comments.

So spew what you want, TLP—we’ve all got thick skins.

Sometimes, I just wish that I could be back home to celebrate the wins with some fellow fans.  When I was back in Michigan, it was such a treat to get to watch Game 7 of the Ducks series with my brother and be among fellow fans.

As a huge Wings fan and somebody who reads the PuckDaddy stuff regularly, I have to say they do a terrific job.  They really are impartial in their assessments of games even though they may not like the Wings.  They have given the Wings plenty of credit over the past two seasons.  I love their sense of humor as well.  They are also correct in assessing that many Wings fans are overly sensitive and take themselves way too seriously.  Reading some of the comments on here is quite embarrassing, and you tarnish the good names of most Wings fans.  TLP, Wysh, please take note that not all Wings fans are whiney, bumbling, babies.

I think you guys are being a little too hard on Greg

I honestly have no problem with Greg Wyshynski. He seems like a nice, smart guy with a good sense of humor. And kudos to him for going on air with Red Winger to explain his position. I believe he means what he says.*

That said, I still believe there is a pervasive undercurrent of anti-Red-Wing bias on Puck Daddy…moreso against the Wings than any other team in the NHL. But my problem isn’t with the anti-Wing bias, it’s with the fact that, like I said earlier, it always seems to be rather poorly couched in faux-objectivity. I don’t know. Maybe I’m just reading into things too much, but there always seems to be one or two pointed barbs about the Wings buried in just about every post about them.

It’s almost easier to accept a post like TLP’s who basically says “The Red Wings suck and so do their fans.” At least it’s honest and up front. With their other Red-Wing-related material, there always seems to be this undercurrent of hostility just barely below the surface. As if they’re just going through the motions of objectivity because they’ve got a non-biased reputation to uphold.

******************

* The only thing that sorta confused me in that discussion this afternoon was Wyshynski’s claim that the Lidstrom and Datsyuk All-Star suspensions can be considered an example of the NHL being “against” the Wings.

If I recall correctly, like I pointed out earlier, Greg himself argued long and hard during All-Star week that those suspensions were well-warranted. I remember arguing with him about that at length in the forums, even to the point that he later called me out in an actual blog post for what he considered to be my ridiculous argument against the suspensions.

So I’m either remembering that wrong or he has since completely changed his tune.

Well Alan, you’ve got a point there.  As nationwide chains go, I was never partial to Domin-Ho’s, and even the wife agreed that the Little Caesar’s she had from a joint in a bad neighborhood in Titusville, Florida was good, so I’ll concede that.  Still, I’d take anything in Michigan over it—Guinness always tastes better in Ireland, and Little Caesar’s always tastes better back home in The Mitten.

gotta say Cottage Inn is the winner there.  Or backdoor…

Erm, that’s BackROOM Dave, but I know what you’re talking about.  They’re nothing spectacular, but hell, at a buck a slice, it’s great when you’ve drunk all your money and are staggering out for something non-alcoholic and doughy to fill up on (thus ruling out Third Coast Old Ale…ba-dum-bum).  I’ll agree with you about Earthen Jar—I used to work at the library next door and that was some good Indian for the money.

but the world, hell, the universe revolves around Zingerman’s.

Agreed, Cap’n—that’s where the Chief’s cheese came from—but for year’s I’ve watched their prices get bigger and their sandwiches get smaller, but there are days when I long for a #32, double old (and if you know what I’m talking about there, I salute you).  And speaking of next doors, I went to high school next door.  Took many a test on a stomach full of bread ends and chicken soup.

i guess has to be the chitown style stuffed pizza at pizza house.

Eh.  House is a latecomer to the scene, but they’re okay.  Still don’t beat Anthony’s for stuffed pizza.  But their white pizza’s all right, though NYPD’s is better.

WizDoucheSki and all of the other PD contributors couldn’t find an impartial unbiased thought even if Switzerland handed them one on a silver platter. About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
