Didn’t I say I wouldn’t whine about the schedule anymore. Didn’t I Gary? If you’re looking to pass the time before they drop the puck on the other side of the world (but in the same conference…ass), I’d recommend Lowetide. A good look at the Wings, with a nice tribute to a few legends.
He (Frank Mahovlich) used to barrel down the left wing and release bombs from inside the blueline in a time when goalies could get beaten by the best shooters on that kind of play.
When I was a kid, the Red Wings had really old guys. Alex Delvecchio looked like the guys who lived in the old folks home I delivered papers to when he was still playing in the NHL, Gordie Howe was an icon who seemed to be as old as hockey itself.
While you’re at it, check out the comments from the Oil fans. Interesting conversation going on discussing the Wings success at finding talent in Europe the last twenty years.
I can’t help thinking back to the words of Kent Nilsson before the 2002 draft when he said something like: “Hudler might be the most talented guy in the draft, but he’s small so he’ll get passed over and then Detroit will take him in the third round.” Well, they decided not to wait and took him in the second round, 58th overall.
Whether Hudler turns into another Zetterberg or Datsyuk is still an open question, obviously, but the fact that Nilsson pinned the team that would draft him (and it wasn’t his own team, the Oilers, of course) says something about the Wings’ philosophy and scouting system. I’ll bet somewhere among Hudler, Filppula, Kopecky, and Franzen is a late bloomer or two who will carry the mail for the Wings for years to come.

Gordie invented hockey.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Hudler’s goal the other night was a thing of beauty. It shows how a small player can exploit the size of opposing defensemen and skate around them like a pylon. He showed a flash of brilliance, let’s hope he gets some confidence from it.
