Hawks feed tonite on Center Ice. A Hawk home game, no less. Even for us Wing fans, that’s good to see. Game intro focused completely on the four game streak. Hawks have cumulatively outscored Detroit 6-1 in the third periods through the first four games.
Robert Lang’s hair appears to be impeccably coifed.
Game previews can be found at On The Wings and Third Man In.
National Anthems in Chicago are the best of any arena in the continental 48...if this rivalry ever gets renewed it would be something very good for Gary’s NHL.

Zetterberg must have used his cloak of invisibility to get that open.

Lilja the magician found him Baroque. Never underestimate the big man’s offensive gifts.
ahem.
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 01/06/08 at 07:12 PM ET
Did Lilja get the primary assist on that Zet goal??
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 07:12 PM ET
Geez, too easy, maybe I need to go do my nails tonight
Posted by dougie on 01/06/08 at 07:13 PM ET
I thought he did Okie. But now they’re giving it to Samuelsson. I’m feeling a big night for Filppula tonite.

Whoever is in charge of assigning internet names and such should determine some universal sarcasm font or symbol.
Otherwise how would I be able to know if you were serious making comments like that?
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 01/06/08 at 07:14 PM ET
Gee, Sammy also makes the hair on my neck stand on end when he gets the puck in the D-zone. Amazing he started that scoring play and gets the primary assist too.
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 07:17 PM ET
I know.
But not everyone does something like that.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 01/06/08 at 07:17 PM ET
I bet we see more of Downey tonite, with his gloves off.
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 07:18 PM ET
Lang hasn’t scored in a few games.
Anyone else suspect he might break his slump this game?
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 01/06/08 at 07:19 PM ET
Kind of irritating to realize our best penalty killer also takes the fourth most penalties on the team. 37th and 38th PIM for Draper.
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 01/06/08 at 07:20 PM ET
Baroque, it depends on how much hair spray he has in his coif!!!
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 07:21 PM ET
AHEM!!!
Posted by dougie on 01/06/08 at 07:21 PM ET
Why isn’t that a penalty on the Datsyuk breakaway??
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 07:23 PM ET
Man...almost a big time highlight from Datsyuk.
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 01/06/08 at 07:23 PM ET
On Friday before I left work, I was talking with a coworker (also a Wings fan) about Lang. He didn’t mind him playing so well against the Wings, necessarily, because at least he only has the opportunity to kill them eight games a year instead of eighty.
He is not the biggest Bob Lang fan.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 01/06/08 at 07:24 PM ET
He is not the biggest Bob Lang fan.
He meets one of the core criteria to become reader number 20.
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 01/06/08 at 07:25 PM ET
Then, I guess I must count among the 19 huh Chief?

Niiice. Makes me think about Hatcher trying to decapitate teammate Lupul. Kinda glad he’s not still around.
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 01/06/08 at 07:28 PM ET
I like the Downey/Ellis/Kopecky line—lots of energy
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 07:31 PM ET
And Hatcher didn’t even help the kid up afterwards. Concussion and spinal contusion - I hope he’ll be okay.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 01/06/08 at 07:32 PM ET
Cleary! I was just about to ask if Babs is double-shifting the guy...every time I look up from what I’m doing he’s on the ice.
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 01/06/08 at 07:32 PM ET
Holland is regretting not re-signing Cleary every passing day. His play just makes his price tag get higher and higher!!!
Sweet goal—drives the net hard!!!!
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 07:32 PM ET
Two goals from the top two lines, each featuring an amazing pass.
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 01/06/08 at 07:32 PM ET
Two goals on four shots!!! Bulin might not see the end of this game. Wings look like have decent jump, especially having just played yesterday,
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 07:36 PM ET
I hope the 4th line sees lots of time tonite. Especially since two of them are likely to be healthy scratches soon!!!
Zet looks to have the puck following him around—AGAIN!!!
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 07:39 PM ET
That’s because the Wings are annoyed they haven’t beaten the Hawks yet. It’s irritating - like the high-pitched buzz of a mosquito.
No matter how tired you are, the whine just burrows into your brain until you have to get out of bed, turn on the lights, and swat the stupid insect flat as a pancake.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 01/06/08 at 07:40 PM ET
Nice shot on the bench of Zetterberg talking to Hudler and pointing to his head
Posted by dougie on 01/06/08 at 07:40 PM ET
SPEARED by BULIN!!!!! 2 goals on 4 shots I guess does that to a goalie
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 07:40 PM ET
Khabibulin missed the puppies...it would appear. But as Psycho Eddie would tell you (as would Homer) it’s the thought that counts.
From Third Man In:
Chicago is young (Kane), dumb (Lang), and hungry (Byfuglien).

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 01/06/08 at 07:42 PM ET
Because Khabibulin isn’t a Flyer?
Maybe it’s a good thing Holmstrom isn’t playing in the game. If he’s that cranky, Homer might be back on the injured list quickly.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 01/06/08 at 07:43 PM ET
Statement game. Absolutely without question.

SAMMY—Goal and an Assist --- Nick with another point. League Leader in D points.

*still grumbling*
NHL Rule 86: Spearing
B. A major and a game misconduct shall be imposed on a player who spears an opponent. (See also Rule 43—Attempt to or Deliberate Injury of Opponents.)
C. A match penalty shall be imposed on a player who injures an opponent as a result of a spear. (See also Rule 43—Attempt to or Deliberate Injury of Opponents.)
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 01/06/08 at 07:44 PM ET
Hmmmm, after that spear, I’d like to see one of Tuesday nights healthy scratches do a human bowling ball impersonation right through the crease
Posted by dougie on 01/06/08 at 07:44 PM ET
3 goals on 7 shots!!! DAMN— BULIN might not be in net to start the second
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 07:45 PM ET
I think Downey’s going to be tempted by more than a few Hawks the next two periods. But this doesn’t seem like his kind of game to mix it up. Smartest fighter I’ve seen in a long time. If the game gets closer and he senses the Wings have lost their edge, yeah. But if it stays this way, he’ll have to be pushed pretty far to go.
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 01/06/08 at 07:46 PM ET
Cleary—its time to stop this whole ordeal with Chicago.
Chief on the mark: statement game.
3 Goal lead. Ellis/Downey/Kopecky get more than 10 mins tonite—guaranteed (almost)
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 07:47 PM ET
Not to worry Gabe. My money says Bulin will not be in net to start the 2nd. Your right though. Freaking “new NHL” supposed to be enforcing the rules, and Kopecky clearly got speared.
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 07:49 PM ET
Cleary at intermission . . .
its time to stop this whole ordeal with Chicago.
Chief: I think Uncle Mike is going to play Downey alot tonite. It is a statement game. Not only will the Wings light the scoreboard. They’ll also play “physical” .. making another statment.
Wings will dominate this game in every aspect - - including playing the policeman—Downey.
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 07:53 PM ET
its time to stop this whole ordeal with Chicago.
Yep.
Swat the irritating mosquito.
Considering Chicago has come back so many times against Detroit, I don’t see them easing up this game. They’re tired of losing to this team and want to make a point.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 01/06/08 at 07:56 PM ET
Bulin starts the second. He won’t make it past the first five minutes is my guess.
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 01/06/08 at 08:02 PM ET
scoring from NHL.com:
00:50 Henrik Zetterberg, Assists: Andreas Lilja and Jiri Hudler
14:06 Daniel Cleary, Assists: Pavel Datsyuk and Brian Rafalski
19:51 PPG - Mikael Samuelsson, Assists: Jiri Hudler and Nicklas Lidstrom
LILS gets the first assist on the Zet goal
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 08:03 PM ET
Lilja, the magician “ahem”, has been credited with the primary assist on Z’s goal.
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 01/06/08 at 08:04 PM ET
Ozzy good, and Lils makes a good D play
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 01/06/08 at 08:06 PM ET
damn—Lils has really stepped up his game this year—perhaps because his contract is up this year too??? Just saying.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:
