As you’re considering where the NHL’s runner ups will fall on the Official A2Y Rivalry Depth Chart, you may want to keep this little ditty in mind:
Brendan Shanahan has allegedly contacted Ray Shero and asked about the possibility of joining the Pens.
Opinions in Pittsburgh? Perky.
Honestly, I’m not sure it would be a bad idea. Even though Shanahan wouldn’t be able to replace Gary Roberts in terms of toughness, he could be ideal as veteran presence which is something the Penguins have lost a great deal of and it was obviously something that was necessary for them to make it as far as they did last season!
I’ve long harbored a great deal of resentment against the use of the exclamation point. But I’ll save that for another time. Shanny wouldn’t “replace GR in terms of toughness”? Really? Ahhh, she’s probably right. Neither are going to drop the gloves anymore. 1 fight for Shanny last year. 2 for Roberts. But the edge in net-front presence goes to Roberts. Shanahan hasn’t been a true power forward since well before his last Cup with the Dynasty in ‘02.
Regardless, it would appear the interest is mutual.
Pittsburgh is beginning to inquire about the possibility. Over the past 72 hours the Penguins had discussions with Shanahan’s representatives. Discussions were brief and centered around what kind of role Shanahan would have but Shanahan made it known to Shero early in free agency he would be willing to sign for 1.5 -1.8 million. At this moment, nothing is imminent but for the first time in a month, Pittsburgh is at least looking into the possibility.
Rumor. Innuendo. August. Chances of Shanny becoming a Baby Boy Groupie? No idea. But, it would be an interesting scene at the Joe if his first regular season appearance back in Detroit comes in a Pittsburgh sweater on 11 November.
Would you boo him then, or would you save that kind of class for Fedorov? Oh, sorry to disappoint. 91 won’t be visiting the Joe this year. Neither will Ovechkin for that matter.
Say it with me.
Thanks Gary. Ass.

Chief, this rumor is another example why it is less exciting to be a Red Wings fan, but much more satisfying. Other teams will grab headlines with rumors about which past it star will join them, or which overrated puck moving defenseman they are paying six million per year for, but Holland and Company will go on quietly making the best moves, unnoticed. If it’s a good move for Shanhan, good for him as he did a lot for Detroit. But in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter.
As an aside, I’ve got to tell you and the 19 about this weird recurring dream I’ve been having. In 1998 I wrapped up my Navy service. Whenever I’m stressed out, I dream that I get a reserve activation notice and I’m back on the same ship with the same crew for a year or so. Last night, I had the dream again, but when I went up to the bridge for my first turn as OOD, the junior conning officer up there to learn how to drive the ship was Ensign Pavel Datsyuk. Of course, he picked up ship driving very quickly.

TDeters, why does the idea of Datsyuk driving a ship make me more comfortable than a few junior officers I’ve met?
Datsyuk as “The Ensign”. Interesting.

I wouldn’t expect much booing. I’d actually expect a pregame ovation. He didn’t leave with the same bad taste Feds did. But if he pots 2 or 3 goals during the game, that might change.
I hope the Pens do pick him up. Shanny will be a better role model than Cheapshot Roberts.

After this offseason so far, I’m suprised that he isn’t signing with the Blackhawks….

Shanny to the Pens, meh…..
“Sundin to the Hawks” now there would be a story.
8:10 tee time…gotta run.

While I don’t condone booing Feds I understand why people do it considering how he left town. I actually think it would be much worse if his game hadn’t completely dropped off once he had to be “the man” for another franchise. Imagine if he was actually a force while in Anaheim or Columbus. The fans would have been even worse towards him.
I doubt Shanny gets much negative response from the fans. And Baroque is right - if recent history holds he’ll tear it up the first two months or so of the season then fade over the back half of the season.
But he’d definitely be worth it for less than $2 million.

Fedorov left Detroit on nebulous terms; he really didn’t explicitly say why he left. There was a possibility that the Schmucks’ ex-GM Bryan Murray, with whom Fedorov was fairly close to, was a reason and that he wanted to remain as a centerman for the remainder of his career - a slight to Bowman for putting him on left defense.
Shanahan left amiably and said so in his departure from Detroit, which was clearly understood. At least he was forthright about it.
As for Shanny in Pensland? Aren’t they already up against the cap? If not them, then the Caps perhaps?

Oh, I think he’d probably get an ovation before the game - his first assist on a Crosby goal and the warm fuzzies will be over.

Never trust an Ensign, Chief. And I say that as a former SWO myself.

The scariest hockey-related dream I had involved Datsyuk, too - but he was in an Anaheim Ducks jersey, then was traded to Toronto.

I would applaud Shanny, even if he scored a goal with Crosby. He helped us to three cups…that grants him lifetime immunity from booing.

As a Penguin?
I think he gets a fair number of boos - certainly during the game (if not before it) he hears boos, because the Crosby contagion will contaminate him. He’ll be touched by the Penguin cooties at that point.
Veteran presence for sure, and he might look alright in November - but he fades fast near the end of the regular season now.
