Yes He Is, But For How Long?

Eric Duhatschek of The Globe and Mail asks, “Is Zetterberg The NHL’s Best?”

The answer after 12 games is a clear “yes.”  But the true test remains, and it’s inevitable.  What happens when Monty Babcock’s Flying Circus of Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Holmstrom is broken up in favor of balance across four units?

“For us here, unfortunately, both Mikael Samuelsson and Johan Franzen got hurt,” said Zetterberg, in a telephone interview prior to the start of their three-game Western Canada road swing that continues Tuesday night in Edmonton. “That’s why they put me and Pav and Homer back together and ever since then, we’ve been working good together. It’s going to be fun to see, now that Sammy’s back and the Mule (Franzen) is coming back too, what coach Babcock does.”

Even if (and when) his offensive pace drops, he’ll still be an 80+ (PPG) player, and when you take into account his ability to play in ANY situation, he’s still the best all-around player in the league right now. There are two guys that I can think of that are currently competing at his level when it comes to all-around play—Rod Brind’Amour and Daniel Alfredsson. Frankly, I have to make this a two-horse race because I’m not convinced that Brind’Amour, while a fantastic player, and the type of guy I’d love on my team, can keep it up all season and into the playoffs.

Jordan Staal isn’t far behind those three, and that’s only due to youth, not raw ability.

Zetterberg is a beast, but all the players in that line seem to really feed off each other for points. I don’t think he’d stand out as much if the Flying Circus were to break up. I’m hoping it’ll will hold together even after Franzen’s back- they’re awesome to watch, and it’s nice to be able to say we have the best line in the NHL. With the other lines starting to score more, splitting the top line doesn’t seem like as much of a necessity anymore.

That’s what I’m hoping for.  If the scoring balances out on its own, there will be no need to disband the Flying Circus.

If nothing else, the line has to be together on January 12th against Ottawa.  Too bad the two teams don’t play against each other more than once with all the talk of which line is better this season.
