So, Jason Williams isn’t closing the door on a return to Stanley’s Rightful Home.
You believe that? Have you forgotten how “slighted” little Jason was the last time in Detroit? Is Mike Babcock going somewhere? Because, if not? Willie’s not a big fan.
Remember this quote after Williams was (finally) sent to the press box in 2007?
“He’s the coach, he makes the decisions. I don’t really like the way he did it. I just have to control what I can control.’’
How did he do it?
“Just coming up and giving me a tap on the shin pads (after the pregame warm-ups), that’s how he normally does it, but he could have come to me before the game and said, “We’re going to probably sit you out tonight,’’ or something like that and explain it to me. It’s the way he wants to handle it, he’s going to control the situation how he wants to control it.’’
He whined like a bitch back then. No reason to think he won’t if he comes back.

Every time I think of Jason Williams on the point, during a power play, I feel like stabbing myself in the eyes.
Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

While I wouldn’t mind William’s offensive production and likely price per goal, I really think we need someone more defensively responsible and gritty. I have full faith and confidence in Dats, Z, Mule, Fil, Ville, Helmer, and Buckets to light the lamp plenty enough. I’d like someone that can drop the gloves when the need arises without suffering career-ending injuries. Someone that can backcheck and forecheck like his life depends on it. Williams does not fill that prescription. Maybe as a second signing he can fit. I’d rather fill the needs first.
Ah well, In Kenny We Trust.

Does anyone want this guy back? Seriously? Even if he pops 25 goals and bombs in 12 from the point on the PP and doesn’t directly cause a shorty against during the regular season, he’s going to be invisible come game one of the post-season.

nathan, agreed. He offers nothing this team can’t get internally. Ericsson and Stuart will be fine on ppl, don’t bring back this clown.

Man, f*ck a Jason Williams.
He’s the most boring interview in hockey, is dumb as a bag of dicks, and he looks like he smells like vinegar.
I’d honestly rather have Sean Avery back than Jason Williams.

From the sounds of Custans article, he doesn’t seem that thrilled about the prospect of coming to Detroit either. Keeping the door open on the KHL and talking about how he’d love to stay in Columbus. Strange.

Very, very average goal-scorer with defensive shortcomings? We had a good goal-scorer with defensive shortcomings and he’s headed to Russia.
Ville Leino is our average goal-scorer with defensive shortcomings, now.
Likely less scoring production than Hudler, but with more high end potential than Williams, and far more effective when he has to use his body to protect the puck. I am recalling a shift or two around the 3/4 mark of the season where he was playing on the 4th line and we were getting 30-40 seconds of puck possession behind the net, in the corners, and in front of the goal out of Leino, Maltby and probably Draper, though it might’ve been someone else. My memory is faulty.
I think, with some Babcock motivational ass-chewing, Leino will replace Hudler nicely as a third-line wing, at worst. At best he’ll be able to slip up and spell Homer in the top 6 to keep the Demolition Man from being demolished by midseason again.
Posted by shanetx on 07/29/09 at 02:27 PM ET
Amen. If he doesn’t sign with the BJ’s, he’s going to Russia. I can’t see him lasting a whole year with Babs again.
A year in the KHL has got be easier than a year in Uncle Mike’s Chateau de BowWow. Somebody send Jason the number of Happy’s agent.

He stunk in Atlanta last year. I seriously wanted to march out onto the ice, grab him by the sweater, and drag him to the press box myself. It was when he was traded to Columbus that Atlanta started to improve last season.
Started to, anyway.
Don’t f’in sign him, Tick Tock.

Williams would be the easy selection for Red Wings player the fans love most to hate.
Of course, there were likeable things about the last one. I have a feeling we’d go from “Poop in the box, Sammy” to “Eat sh!t and die, Williams”.

Re: Williams—Good riddance. Enjoy the KHL. It seems every season we’ve got at least one guy who plays half-assed and gets stuck on the point until we can offload him. I’m tired of those types of players. Time for folks who want to play.
Leino will be fine with more playing time and conditioning.
We do need to fill out our roster one one veteran, I think, for the fourth line.
Personally I’d love to see Shanny back.

I really, really don’t understand your disagreement with the 10 and 11 (not two 11s) contracts unless you’re just looking at them incorrectly. You’ve expressed displeasure a few times and I’d be interested to hear why.
In my view, they’re a great, great tool for the Wings to use in the two cases they did- a 28 and 29 year old pair of players. Think of them as 7 (Mule) or 8 (Z) year contracts with an option to resign if it makes it sound any better. They keep key guys around for the entirety of their prime.
There’s not a downside, here, unless you’re expecting injury or a steep degradation in skill on two guys that really don’t have the miles on them that they probably should at their age. You gotta figure Z and Franzen’s ability probably will not falter for a few more years.
You either had to pay the guys for 5-6 years, and at that term you’d have had them with a higher cap value and the same chance of an injury, or you let them walk away. Easy choice.
These are not AO/Crosby/Rick DiPietro style long-term contracts by any means.

And it sounds like we’re all a little anxious to drop the puck. Let’s get to training camp and see who has what for desire to return Stanley home. Uncle Mike and Tick Tock will get things sorted out pdq.
Williams? Nope.
Greir? Nah.
Avery? Pahleeeese no.
Dandy? Has possibilities.
Shanny? Could be a good move - good teacher for the kids. (If he & Babs can get along.)

Hippy Dave has been smokin some of that Afgan. Those contracts are the SHIT!! ARE YOU KIDDING? Fuk J.Williams, but those deals are what make other GM’s look like little bitches.
Sundin + Detroit = The Swedish Connection (take the pay cut you bitch)
J.Williams = Cock-For-Head
Dandy + Shanny = If we can get em both might not be to horrible (considering we are now at J.Willams level) Do we have the space for both?
Grier + Detroit = big fat ? sounds good on paper but does he have what we think he has or is he a d1ck fyckin shit bag candy ass? This was metioned before, but I am also haunted by the same highlight over and over when Pasha dangles him into his own guy bahahaha that shit was too funny!!!

Williams never really lived up to his potential…though that could be said for a lot of players. If he wants the playing time he’ll sign elsewhere no doubt. How can you blame a guy for sour grapes by a team that pretty much dumped him. If anything the fact that money (even if it’s paltry) doesn’t talk with him is probably a better sign for him being a loyal guy…loyalty in the nhl doesn’t really exist anymore.
Posted by stoneman from Vegas on 07/30/09 at 12:36 AM ET
Lots of players say stuff like this. I don’t care if Williams comes back or not, but the way you hate certain players is kind of weird.

Williams never really lived up to his potential
what, as an undrafted free agent?
the dude had some promise as an NHL player up until torres almost took his head off. he wasn’t the same after. he plays scared now.
and i too have NIGHTMARES of him at the point on the powerplay. fu#$ that! not sure why babs is so into the whole average foward playing the point thing. ericsson won the hardest shot competition at the AHL all-star game. put him back there with krons.
all reports seem to point to the fact that the WIngs are the ONLY team offering Williams squat. while i don’t want him back, assuming the team trades meech or lebda, or lils doesn’t get better, we could definitely have a worse 13th forward sitting in the press box for minimum wage. i think that’s why he’s basically begging the russians to sign him for some kind of a decent wage. i mean seriously, who can actually live on only a half a million dollars? that ‘s crazy!

I’m watching Game 1 against the Preds from 2008 on NHL Network right now…I looked ahead and apparently they’re showing Round 1 games for the Wings from 08 and 09. Something to pass the time?
Although most of you are probably sleeping.
Posted by Tyler from Arizona on 07/30/09 at 03:13 AM ET
You either had to pay the guys for 5-6 years, and at that term you’d have had them with a higher cap value and the same chance of an injury, or you let them walk away.
Not to mention that the 6-year deal that everyone thinks is the longest a deal should be for would mean that when it’s done, Zetterberg would be 35 and if he reitred during his next contract, we’d still be on the hook.
These are two guys who were drafted and developed by Detroit, two guys who have paid their dues and really come into their own. And with these deals, either one of the guys can retire when he wants to or needs to without worrying about burdening the team with the contract. Or rather, without the team worrying about having to be burdened with the contract.
I don’t see how anyone (any Wings fan, anyhow) can see this as anything but a win-win situation. They both get a payday, they both get security, they both get awarded for their loyalty and the organization gets a break on the cap hit.

Not sure it would be wise to give up on Williams. He was a youngster here, and three moves
later..he may have learned what Babs was trying to teach him. He went right through the playoffs for Hitchcock, and if he wasn’t trying to live up to his defensive responsibilities…Hitch would have epoxied him into the press box after the first 5 reg season games. He has a long career ahead of him..and he can skate, good hands and hockey sense. Those skills can’t be taught, but finding the holes and backchecking can be learned. I don’t think he would have lasted here as long as he did if he was a dressing room problem.

Mule pots 40, Wally and Buckets get 20 and Dr. eVille might be good for that, too. Ozzie ... well, frankly, Ozzie can have a GAA of 37 in the regular season and I am not going to say shit. [quote]KHL Registers the Contract of Jiri Hudler with Dynamo Moscow
(Moscow, RUS) - Today, on the 30th of July at 10 a.m., the KHL registered the contract of Jiri Hudler (Czech. Rep) with HC Dynamo (Moscow). This was done because of:
· Absence of Agreement or any other type of arrangement between the KHL and the NHL regarding transfers of players who are under status of restricted free agents
· Rejection of the NHL to cancel registration of contract of player Evgeni Dadonov with NHL club Florida Panthers despite the fact that all contractual and sports rights for the player belong to HC Tractor Chelyabinsk
· Absence of valid contract of Jiri Hudler with any NHL club
· Prohibition from the NHL management to the Detroit Red Wings to negotiate with HC Dynamo Moscow on the rights for Jiri Hudler
· Attempts by the Vancouver Canucks to sign a contract with hockey player Sergei Shirokov for whom all contractual and sports rights belong to the HC CSKA Moscow
The KHL had to settle the following decisions:
· To register the contract of player Jiri Hudler with Dynamo Moscow on the July 30, 2009 without dependence of the results of hearings at NHL arbitration on his case. Hudler has the right to make his own choice in which league he will play
· To confirm that KHL is ready at any time and in any format – including through meditation by the IIHF – to start negotiations with the NHL on the status of restricted free agents and on any other aspects of General Agreement on transfers of players between the KHL and NHL
