You Can’t Make This Stuff Up:  Ericsson Down With Knee Injury

Via Bruce MacLeod, the Anti-Digger.

Coach Mike Babcock said after tonight’s game that Jonathan Ericsson’s knee will be checked tomorrow.

“We’re hopeful,” said Babcock. “We’ll see what happens. It didn’t look very good on TV.”

Ericsson left the game after being checked by Shane Doan with five minutes left in the first period. The hit caused Ericsson’s left knee to buckle backwards.

MacLeod also reports that Uncle Mike indicated Thursday’s starter will be Jimmah Howard.

Also, of note?  Moments after Ericsson was helped off the ice, Doan was seen laughing on the bench.  Until he took an errant puck in the face.  Then he wasn’t laughing very much anymore.  Probably because it hurt. Oh, and then his team lost, which he didn’t find quite so funny either.

Oh, and one more note of note?  Here’s your list:  Ericsson, Helm, Cleary, Filppula, Franzen, Kronwall, Williams.  Name me one team in the NHL that could withstand that kind of carnage and still be only six points out of the conference lead.  You can’t because there can be only one and it’s the Wings.  Best team in hockey. Best franchise in all of sports.

These injuries pierce my soul.  But I’ll speak for the 19 when I say we’re damn proud tonite.  Another Wing goes down, another victory.  Next?  Bring it.

The proof that the Hockey Gods favour Jonny Ericsson is in the fact that we all saw an errant puck hit Doaner in the face as he sat on the bench.  It just came out of nowhere and BAM!  I think Jonny will be alright based on my pharmaceutical knowledge of people’s health who rock jerry curls.

He’ll be fine.  Just rub some dirt on it and take a salt tablet.

I think that was a lite version of the hit that Kronwall laid last year and got tossed for… Is it just me, or did Doan leave his feet?  I was just about to write about how it was too bad that it was a clean hit, but I just don’t know after watching it several times…

Maybe it’s a sign from the hockey gods?

Like they’re destroying the team with injuries to make us stronger, but they know this is rough for the fans so they hit Doan with the puck just as a little sign that they’re on our side?

Am I going crazy?

Here’s the difference between the Wings’ injury situation, and the Penguins’: All of our guys are out at the same time. The Wings will play, more than likely, the rest of this month without Cleary, Franzen, Kronwall, Filppula, Williams, Lilja and Ericsson (because I don’t think it’s good at all). I know other teams have had their top guys go down, but the only team who has had a comparable injury situation, I.E. having 8 of their regulars out at one time, are the Edmonton Oilers.

As long as we’re talking injuries, what about during the preseason? We had guys like Z out. You don’t think that that may have affected our play at the beginning of the season? Chemistry was definitely affected. I’m really impressed how guys are stepping up and not using injuries as an excuse. When we’re healthy, nobody will prevent us from taking #12.

Our injured players skew younger than our team in general and the Pen’s team as a whole looking at mean and median.  Injured Wings includes only the names in the Chief’s original post; the parentheses are the number when Lilja is included.

.....................Pens….....Wings…....Injured Wings
Median….....29.5….......29.5….......28 (28.5)
Mean….........28.49…....29.93….....26.86 (27.75)

Helm is our youngest injury at 22, followed by Ericsson & Fil (25), Kronwall (28), Franzen & Williams (29), Cleary (30), and Lilja (34).

The “Wings r geezers lol” fallacy seems to be well-entrenched among Pittsburgh fans.  Last year I had a whole spread sheet that demonstrated that the Pens were actually older than the Wings on average (mean), by more than a year when Chelios was removed as an outlier, but I can’t remember the actual conclusions and that stuff died with my old laptop.

Injuries weren’t as long though (usually three-four weeks rather than two-three months).

The Wings have taken it on the chin with injuries way harder than the Pens, for sure.

Injury length-wise at least.  Missing 5 of the 6 blueline regulars at the same time was not a fun thing, though.  At least it was only for a few weeks.

Wings losing Ericsson = Pens losing Goligoski or Letang.
Wings losing Kronwall = Pens losing Orpik.
Wings losing Rafalski = Pens losing Gonchar or Letang.
Wings losing Datsyuk = Pens losing Malkin.
Wings losing May/Draper/Williams = Pens losing Talbot/Kennedy/Kunitz.

These players aren’t necessarily equal skill wise or anything, just in what they are/what type of rolls they play with their respective teams.  Maybe.  I don’t know, that’s just the way I was looking at it.

The severity and length of the injuries is what separates the two teams…it’s just unbelievable how badly the Wings have been bitten by the injury bug this year.  If they overcome a season like this and make the playoffs, though?  I agree with you guys…look out.  Nobody wants to play a team like that.  Ever.

I heard you guys had to miss Happy Pony in the locker room, too.  It must have been very upsetting.

Regarding E’s knee -

“We’re hopeful,” said Babcock. “We’ll see what happens.
Having to wait for tests is a very good thing, relatively speaking.  A tear in either MCL or ACL would be clear to a team doc with 1/10th of a brain cell, and would be no reason for hope. The leg moves in strange ways relative to the thigh if there’s a tear.

Waiting for a scan to decide most likely means sprain (and I’m guessing MCL, based on the hit).  There could also be some minor meniscus problems which are deceptively painful, as well (i.e. no weight-bearing). We’re probably talking 1-2 months rather than most of the season.

So long as Babbles, you know, isn’t making that whole part up about being “hopeful” and having to wait to know, because that’s never happened before.

I thought about this last night myself.  A lot of teams would have rolled over and died.  The amount of losses they’ve sustained, first to the cap and then to injury, are ridiculous.  Given the amount of pissing and moaning regarding the Wings level of play this season, and I know that I for one have done plenty of that, you’d think they were totally healthy.  But they’re not, not by a long shot.  The injuries keep coming, but so do the Wings.

They.  Just.  Keep.  Coming.    The junkyard dogs of the NHL.

Guys:  I do not think we are giving Jimmah enough credit for the Wings recent success.
It looks to me like he comes way out of the paint….quicker and further than Ozzie.  And he challenges the attackers.  This leaves the net open behind him, but the defense backs him up and swats the rebounds away.
I think this is the biggest reason for the good PK numbers.

I’m no expert, but losing Kronner has sucked the life out of the PP. The first PP line has been poor all season long, losing him has made that all the more apparent.
The addition of Eaves and Miller seemed to have made a huge difference on the PK, that and the whole team including Howard seem to be challenging more.
It’s good to see that Babs has apparently solved the Achilles’ heel of this team.
The PP should sort itself out with the return of some of our injured comrades
