Khan(!) Makes A Bid To Maintain Deep Digger Captaincy

It’s this kind of reporting that keeps Ansar ahead of his peers.
A couple of readers pointed out that the boy on stage next to Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom last night at the Awards Show had on a jersey that read “LINDSTROM.’’ Each award winner was accompanied on stage by a kid wearing his jersey. What was that Henrik Zetterberg was saying about Lidstrom not getting enough credit in Sweden?
A “couple of readers” pointed it out. Odd. A “couple of readers” here saw it the minute it happened. Did you, you know, watch the awards Ansar?

Dear Gary: I Apologize

Gary Bettman deserves your scorn. And, thankfully, you give it to him frequently.
But I’ve been knocked down a peg today. One of the 19, RWBill, posted an image in the comments of this post that explains the innocent mistake Gary’s crack staff made last evening.
Even the most astute of commissioners can’t be blamed for mistaking Nick Lidstrom for Dick Lindstrom.

He’s only won six Norris trophies Gary. You gave him the cup a little over a week ago.
What did you say to him then? “Congrats Dick”?

I’ll be editing this as we move along.
Gordie Howe, Lifetime Achievement Award? Could it have gone to anyone else?
Lidstrom, Norris? Check. Legendary. 2nd Best Ever? Maybe. Maybe Better.
Datsyuk, Selke? Check. “Long speech, but English is little.”
Zetterberg, Selke? Denied, but with a big old consolation trophy.
Datsyuk, Byng? Check. There was no doubt.
Chelios, Masterson? Denied, but with a Cup, and still with a job…allegedly.
Uncle Mike Babcock, Adams? Denied, but there is no doubt, none, who the best coach in the NHL is.
It’s a dynastic Live Blog.

Pierre LeBrun, on Toronto’s Fan 590, said earlier that Lidstrom is going to have to convince Uncle Mike he’s ready if he expects to play this Sunday, that the staff will take exactly zero chances on a re-injury. Good.

“That Is One Crazy Motherf…”

Updated 1051 EST: Just for fun, read through the list of comments at Russo’s Rant’s blog from last night. Amazing how the tone changed over the course of three hours. Includes a good comment from Matt Saler from OtW.
————
I put that in quotes because I guarantee those were the exact words shouted, whispered in awe or uttered from father to son accompanied by a hearty back slap last night at 2153 EST.
And it’s true. With a shutout just moments away and the memory of watching Chris Osgood start seven consecutive games still very fresh in his cluttered mind, our Czech Miracle of Insanity returned to his sociopathic self and gave us a wakeup call. I’m almost shocked he didn’t point at the cameras after his takedown of Gaborik and say…

Published reports (definitely a phrase that doesn’t carry the weight it used to) out of—where else?—Toronto and Edmonton mention Detroit as a strong landing spot for Mats Sundin, when the Leafs move him out of a sense of loyalty to their captain. The speculation goes like this: Leafs are out of it already. Sundin’s been a loyal soldier. Moving him to a contender is good for him, good for them, good for the world. Sally Strothers would be proud.
And, of course, the Wings have the Swedes. The “published reports” have been posted by The Emperor and George Malik.

Ground rules. Obviously…we need some. Or at least we need a reminder of them. Let me quote from my soon-to-be-released manifesto, “The Difference Between The Diggers and the Wing Bloggers”.
Chapter 19
“Red Wing beat writers must avoid any attempt at humor. It doesn’t suit them and it embarrasses us all. If the humor is unintentional and reflects their role as propaganda artists for the organ-I-zation, that’s fine. But an outright attempt to be funny? Absolutely prohibited.”
Someone didn’t get the advanced copy.

Schedules and stuff

...we could always talk Army/Navy? Nah. First half’s almost done and this game’s over. Scratch that idea. We could talk Les Miles to Michigan, as Kirk Herbstreit reported on ESPN this morning? Nope. Miles has a presser at 1:45 to announce he’s staying at LSU. One note on that: Michigan screwed themselves by opening their elitist idiot traps. If they’d stayed quiet, Miles would be theirs…after today’s game. Idiots.
Ok. The new schedule. The schedule we all wanted? Yeah. Getting closer to it anyway.

Pain in HD

Yes. The Wing/Lightning (tilt, matchup) game (scrum, bonanza, faceoff, match, tete a tete) tonite is on HDNet. Damn, now that’s some good news. I can’t imagine being able to watch Derek Meetch on a wing in anything other than high definition. And of course you know why Uncle Mike’s considering putting Meech on the wing, because Kris Draper’s out with a knee. And Kirk Maltby’ s most likely out with a shoulder. And Matt Ellis is out with, yeah, a head.
Here’s my stance on Wing injuries: anyone but Zetterberg and Lidstrom. I, like you, lull myself into some idiotic rationalization regarding ailments. “As long as it’s not…”, or an even better one, “good thing he got hurt in November and not March.” I want to punch myself in the temple every time I catch myself thinking that, as if an injury in the first quarter of the season fulfills a quota that would prevent bad things in April. Godddd…idiot.
Oh…you’re above that? Okaayyyy. Lying liar.

The Class of ‘89

Just saw an ad for some sort of cheesy melt thing now offered at a big-named Mexican food franchise. The slow-mo imagery of cheddar cheese inspired me to post instead of continue to flip between MSU/Domers and UM/Penn State.
Larry Wigge’s written a nifty little diddy on Dallas Drake and mentions the Wing draft class of ‘89: an amazing effort. Lidstrom, Konstantinov, Fedorov, Bob Boughner, Mike Sillinger and Drake. Think about that: if not for Konstantinov’s misfortune in June of 2007, you’d probably be looking at three hall of famers drafted by one team in one year.
Plenty of good quotes in Wigge’s story from former teammates and opponents. Makes me wish we’d picked him up three years ago when I started whining about it.
”Players often ask you if you caught the license plate on that truck after you get plastered into the boards,” Foote said. “When you play against Dallas Drake, you have that license plate memorized. You expect to be pounded by him. Not a more fierce and honest competitor in the game.’‘
This guy’s going to win some fans in Detroit..quickly.

Windsor Star: Lidstrom Will Pair With Rafalski
by IwoCPO on 09/14/07 at 08:04 PM ET

Now there’s a blue line pairing that is going to hand out punishment like candy at Christmas. Dave Waddell reported today that Nick Lidstrom has been preparing himself for the inevitable: a new defensive partner.
Lidstrom is expected to be paired with Detroit’s plumb off-season signing Brian Rafalski. Having done it so often, Lidstrom expects the transition to be quick and smooth.
“It doesn’t take that long,” Lidstrom said. “He’s a skilled defenceman.
“You get a read on how he’s moving out there. How he’s thinking the game.
“How he’s reacting in different situations. It doesn’t take that long to get to know your partner.”
Lidstrom also expects to be paired with Rafalski on the Wings’ first power-play unit. The left-handed shooting Swede will no longer have to dance along the blue line so much to improve his shooting angle from the middle of the ice.

Kulfan Checks In

Well, you’d better just stand by for hockey. How do I know it’s close? Because former Deep Digger Captain Teddy Kulfan has checked in from his long summer’s hiatus and graced us with a few quotes from The Swede.
“It was a great experience for our younger guys going deep into the playoffs (last season) and playing when it really matters,” Lidstrom said. “They’ll build on that and get better.”
Nothing too deep in Kulfan’s Wing Notebook, but you know we don’t like to place too much pressure on our brittle beat writers. Just let them work their way back into form.

Game 1 To Wings

I know. This is Bubba’s year. It’s his division. This is finally the season he waddles to the top of it and stays there for decades, establishing the dynasty in America’s Mid South that we knew was coming down the pike.
It’s got to be frustrating for Barry Trotz, the Nashville faithful and the 6 Pred fans outside the Nashville area. Just when the geniuses were certain the Wings were ready to fade into mediocrity, they do the unlikely. I’m not talking about winning one game, or even 8. What we may be seeing is a philosophical transformation. First, the game…more deep ruminations (sorry Bubba…“thoughts”) later.
Andres Lilja and Brad Norton scratched. Lilja may never see the ice again in Detroit. I’m serious. Well, not completely serious. But considering the type of defense the Wings are playing, I can’t imagine Mike Babcock is too willing to make even the slightest blue line change unless he has to (which he might…see below).
