Ten Points

The Blue Jackets are off to the best start in franchise history. 5-1-0 and are sitting fifth in the Western Conference. The Blue Jackets have lost ONE game, it’s a nice change from previous seasons. The game last night, was great for a number of reasons, starting from the beginning when I found out that Kris Russell, had signed a three-year extension.
So let’s get down to the game.

Four Days and Counting…

Yesterday, the Jackets acquired Anton Stralman from the Calgary Flames for a third-round pick in the 2010 entry draft.
Stralman is exactly what the Jackets needed, in theory. Here’s General Manager Scott Howson, on the subject:
“Anton fits a critical need on our roster,” Howson said. “He’s got puckmoving ability and power-play potential. He’s a right-(hand) shot, too, which is a nice bonus.
“He’s still a young player in the league, so he has a lot of upside, too.”
We have needed that right-handed shot for quite a while, and he has power-play potential.

More on Nikita

It was a tough call to bring Filatov up, a really tough call. I know that the Syracuse Crunch fans are in a tizzy over it. I was confused when the move was made this morning, but the more I think about it and the more I talk to people about it the more I understand the move - not saying I necessarily agree, but I understand.
Nikita Filatov was playing great hockey in Syracuse, a team that is fighting for its playoff life. Then we have the Columbus Blue Jackets - a team that has never tasted playoff hockey. They’re on the verge of making it, and well, they want Filatov, their number one draft pick in 2008 to be a part of that. Probably for a number of reasons, here’s just a couple of reasons why I think they’re doing this.

Jackets Recall Filatov

This is not an April Fools Day joke folks. Even though it wouldn’t surprise me the least bit to have it be.
Nikita Filatov has been recalled. I don’t know if you remember him, but he was the first rookie in Blue Jackets history to score a hat trick and our first round draft pick in 2008.
Anyway, here’s the catch with the call up from Tom Reed at Puck-Rakers:

Trades, Planes, and Injuries…

The Jackets ran into a hot Canuck team last night. It also didn’t help that the Jackets seemed like they didn’t care one bit about the game.
Thankfully the Jackets remain in sixth place in the Western Conference with another big game coming up tomorrow against the LA Kings.
The real story though, the trade deadline.

Updates from the Jackets

hate the deadline, can’t stand it. Last year was tough on the team and fans, as our ‘captain’ forced his way out. This season we are going to be buyers, which means we’ll be getting rid of some of the players that aren’t “necessary” for the playoff push. I have been trying to come up with a few guys, but nothing really sticks out aside from Backman. I highly doubt that we will have any takers for him.
I trust Scott Howson and his decisions, so I know that if we get a good deal for a quality center, he will take it, but won’t sell the farm. And, hopefully won’t give up too many draft picks doing it.

Time for a Break

Entering the All-Star Break the Columbus Blue Jackets are sitting in 10th place in the Western Conference, two points out of eighth, and four points shy of the fifth place Coyotes, with a game in hand. Last night, the Blue Jackets lost in a skills competition to the Calgary Flames. They went 1-1-1 in their Western Canadian swing, not too bad for an injury ridden team. Those injuries even go to our rookie goaltender, who had to drop out of the YoungStars game due to back spasms. You could tell last night he wasn’t 100% and was probably exhausted after his fifteenth straight start.

Jackets at a Glance

Wow. What a game last night. I don’t have time for a real post, so this will have to do for now, but I promise it will be worth it.
*The game last night was absolutely ridiculous, way too many goals were scored, but in the end we somehow prevailed, and in the shootout to boot. I am impressed.
*Rick Nash was a monster last night. Nash had a goal and two assists and a goal in the shootout to seal the victory for the Jackets. Nash is now the all-time leading scorer for the Columbus Blue Jackets. He is now one point ahead of David Vyborny. Vyborny had 317 points in 543 games. Nash now has 172 goals and 146 assist in 404 games all as a Blue Jacket. Here’s to many more points to come!

The Columbus Kids

The kids are taking over. This team has been getting draft picks galore since joining the league, and now, it’s paying off. It all starts in net.
Pascal Leclaire - Steve Mason - Pazzy earned his spot last season, but this season has been all about Steve Mason. Mason who is leading the league in GAA (1.80) and shutouts (6), is playing like a veteran. He has settled the team down, and has been dependenable. Mason is doing what Pascal Leclaire did last season - only better. I know there is a lot of talk about trading Pazzy but unless it is for a big name center, I don’t see a point. We obviously don’t have the goaltender depth that we need, and it would hurt us more than help.

Rookie Hat Trick

Seriously? This team, is amazing. Still without the services of Nash, Brassard, and Klesla just to name a few, the Jackets pulled out a victory, that I didn’t think would be possible. The story of the night? Nikita Filatov. Forget for a moment, Steve Mason, I know, I know, it’s difficult. How good is this kid? Three goals tonight, against a great defensive team.
