Game 1, Two Points

The Columbus Blue Jackets opened their season against the Minnesota Wild. It was an amazing game. The Jackets were tentative at first, but eventually got their act together and got the win.

With the new season, I’m changing my post game format.

The Hot:

*Umberger getting the short-handed goal. Not to mention the first goal of the season for the Blue Jackets.
*Steve Mason picking right up where he left off.
*Hitchcock is still getting great cheers from the fans, I love that man.
*Rusty Klesla getting a goal on the day he signed an extension. (More on this later)
*Voracek is huge. It was my first time seeing this kid since last season, wow.

Trades, Planes, and Injuries…

The Jackets ran into a hot Canuck team last night.  It also didn’t help that the Jackets seemed like they didn’t care one bit about the game.

Thankfully the Jackets remain in sixth place in the Western Conference with another big game coming up tomorrow against the LA Kings.

The real story though, the trade deadline.

A point lost

The Jackets lost in a skill competition last night.  RJ Umberger was an absolute beast for the Blue Jackets last night.  He set a franchise record by scoring two goals 89 seconds apart.  It was a game that the Jackets should have won.  We had every opportunity to win, but we didn’t capitalize on our chances - shocker, I know.

Making the push

WOW.  With all the injuries and illnesses that fell on us yesterday, I was tempted to just not go to the game.  We were without the services of Methot and Commodore, two of our best defensemen.  We were without our number one goaltenders, and were playing our fourth string guy.  It didn’t look good for the Blue Jackets, playing the last of a back-to-back game against the best in the West.  I got ready and headed up to Nationwide, hoping for the best, and planning for the worst.  I was excited to get my first look at Devin Setoguchi.

I sat in my seat and was shocked when the Blue Jackets scored two quick goals.  I watched as Dan LaCosta and the Blue Jackets defense limited the San Jose Sharks to two goals.

Three in a row

Thankfully yours truly was at work, and then so sick, I just went straight home to bed, only watching one period of the game.  By that point we were already down 3-0.  Here’s my thoughts on what is going on with the Jackets.  It’s nothing profound, but, it’s just my thought.

We got comfortable.

A Look at the Jackets

The lonely Blue Jackets representative, Rick Nash, is enjoying his time in Montreal.  While Nash is getting his All-Star on, the rest of the boys will be spread out throughout the world, and I, well I will still be here, working, going to school, and blogging of course.

So, what I want to do tonight is look at what has been going on with the Jackets, lots have changed, lots has stayed the same.  Let’s think about the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Steve Mason has emerged as one of the best goaltenders in the league.  Because of him, the Jackets are in a playoff race, a legitimate playoff race, ya know one when their captain won’t leave them.  Pascal Leclaire had a brutal season, his nagging ankle injury has been an issue since he got Boogied in the preseason.  Poor guy.  Freddy Norrena and Wade Dubielwicz switched places, Dubie was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jackets, in a gutsy move by Scott Howson.

Jackets at a Glance

Wow.  What a game last night.  I don’t have time for a real post, so this will have to do for now, but I promise it will be worth it.

*The game last night was absolutely ridiculous, way too many goals were scored, but in the end we somehow prevailed, and in the shootout to boot.  I am impressed.

*Rick Nash was a monster last night.  Nash had a goal and two assists and a goal in the shootout to seal the victory for the Jackets.  Nash is now the all-time leading scorer for the Columbus Blue Jackets.  He is now one point ahead of David Vyborny.  Vyborny had 317 points in 543 games.  Nash now has 172 goals and 146 assist in 404 games all as a Blue Jacket.  Here’s to many more points to come!

Four in a Row!

The new Columbus Blue Jackets apparently don’t care about the fact that The Pepsi Center is not always kind to us.  The Jackets went into the game struggling, and then once Steve Mason’s franchise record shutout streak was broken, something clicked, they got mad, and they took over.  They dominated the play and ended up rolling to a 6-1 victory.  Goals were scored by Commodore, Umberger, Voracek, Nash on the penalty shot, and Huselius with two.

Is it time to play hockey yet?

I hate having so many days off between games.  It’s hard to talk about what the team should do now, since, well, there isn’t anything new I can say.  Well, I can always say that I want the goat line back, but you know, that gets old pretty quick.

Derick Brassard is the winner of The Hockey News Calder vote.  What does this mean?  Well, nothing really.  He doesn’t get a prize, but it is nice to see the kid get noticed.  He has so much skill and is finally making the move to the top line with Nash and Huselius.  Brassard is fun to watch, and isn’t afraid to stand up for himself.  Derick Brassard is quickly becoming a fan favorite because he gives it all every single night.  Every shift he is skating his hardest, and he gets better every single game.  I fully expect him to win the Calder if he keeps this up.
