Wow. What a game last night. I don’t have time for a real post, so this will have to do for now, but I promise it will be worth it.
*The game last night was absolutely ridiculous, way too many goals were scored, but in the end we somehow prevailed, and in the shootout to boot. I am impressed.
*Rick Nash was a monster last night. Nash had a goal and two assists and a goal in the shootout to seal the victory for the Jackets. Nash is now the all-time leading scorer for the Columbus Blue Jackets. He is now one point ahead of David Vyborny. Vyborny had 317 points in 543 games. Nash now has 172 goals and 146 assist in 404 games all as a Blue Jacket. Here’s to many more points to come!
*Speaking of Vyborny, according to hockeydb he has 13 goals and 24 assists in 42 games for Sparta Praha.
*Jason Williams has already made an impact. He scored on the power play last night, and the scored the first goal in the shootout. In my humble opinion, that alone makes the trade totally worth it. Is that pathetic? Yes, but the Jackets power play is horrible. Getting a goal was a shocker.
*Luongo and Mason both were off last night. I must say though, they didn’t get any help.
*The Umberger and Kesler situation is so interesting to me. I didn’t know much about it until we got RJ, but, it’s a doozy of a story. Here’s a bit of the article Tom Reed did on the guys today…make sure you read it. It’s actually pretty interesting.
“Him and I have gotten feisty a couple of times (this season), especially after faceoffs,” Umberger said before last night’s game. “He’s a very competitive player, an agitator, and he plays with an edge.”
Both former Buckeyes were first-round draft choices of Vancouver two years apart, Umberger No. 16 overall in 2001 and Kesler No. 23 in 2003.
Kesler was drafted after his freshman season and signed with the Canucks, and Umberger, a junior, could not agree to terms with the franchise. Both left OSU after the 2002-03 season.
At the time, Umberger believed Kesler accepted a low offer and it affected how the Canucks negotiated with him.
And of course here’s the fight.
*This team needs all the help it can get. Chimera might be back tomorrow for the game against the Oilers, but we’ll see.
*Nikita Filatov is also nursing a leg injury. He was supposed to play tomorrow night against the Oilers, but it all depends on what Hitchcock decides. My personal choice is to keep him out until after the All-Star Game this weekend. There is no sense in letting the kid get hurt.
*Speaking of hurt…we all knew Freddy Modin was hurt. We didn’t know how hurt, or even what was hurt, we had guesses, but you never know. He’s now back to practicing with the team, and Arace had a great article on him today. Here’s a teaser…go read it! (You know anything written by Michael Arace is worth the read.)
“I’ve seen this injury with players before, and they don’t play,” coach Ken Hitchcock said. “So, when you talk about toughness I don’t want to hear anybody complain about injuries. The guy has not missed a hockey game. He goes into the other team’s rink, sees the other team’s doctor (for a shot) and plays. He doesn’t complain. Sure his timing isn’t great, and he knows that. But he plays. And he’s been a significant player for us.”
During six weeks on one foot, Modin has three goals and eight points and is plus-6 in 17 games. He has played 14 to 25 minutes every game without working out in between. The Jackets have gone 10-6-1.
*Mason will probably be in net tomorrow against the Oilers.
*I will be having a live blog again tomorrow night, so join me at 8:45 EST. I think I am going to make this a habit…when we are out of town at least.

I agree this game was crazy. But this is the kind of game that the Jackets would have lost in the past. Things are looking good – as if the planets are in alignment or the hockey gods are giving them a fighting chance.
I hope the spirit of the team stays positive.
