Mono, a loss, and a not so fun night

Well, that explains, uhm, everything. Steve Mason was pulled last night for the first time in his short NHL career. Steve Mason has mono. Mononucleosis is absolutely awful, trust me, if you’ve never had it, then you have no idea how bad it is. I suffered through it in 7th grade. I was in and out of school for a month, and even when I came back I was still doing half days for a few weeks.
I don’t really feel comfortable with Mason in net, if he’s dealing with mono. He needs to rest, and really should not be playing. These quotes really don’t help me either.
“Our doctors feel he’s had it for a while and they feel he’s on the other side of the virus,” Howson said. “The worst of it is probably over.”
Probably? The kid needs rest.
“It’s up to him” (whether he can play), Howson said.
No, it’s not. Of course he’s going to want to play, they all want to play.
“He has been feeling run down for three weeks,” Howson said. “He needs to get lots of rest and we must monitor his diet and see what his energy level is like. If he feels he cannot do it, we will make alternative plans.”
Ugh, can we just give him the next game off? Please.
Steve Mason is the meal ticket, and if the meal ticket is hurt, or if something happens to him, what are we going to do?
The game last night was pathetic.
Nobody was ready to play, nobody showed up, and the Jackets looked like an ECHL team out there. I kind of blame myself for this game, though even though there was nothing I could do. . The entire time, I was like, oh they can come back, and I was just going with the flow. I never got upset, until the game was over, I should have expected more out of them.
Mark my words, this game against the Stars, will go down as the worst effort for the Blue Jackets. It WILL be the last time that this happens. WHEN the Jackets make the playoffs this will be the turning point for them.
Here’s the players after the game.

They said his spleen isn’t enlarged. So, that’s good, I am sure they are constantly monitoring him, but I would feel better if he would just take a few days off.

Same thing happened to Brad Richards last year. he played for weeks or a month with mono and no one knew. I’ve known grown men who have wet the bed because they were too weak to get to the bathroom and people who had to drop out of college because time missed, all because of mono. Yet Richards never missed a game. He did wonder why he couldn’t get off the couch on off days, though.
This should be a wake up call to the league, with Richards, Kessel, and now Mason (and who knows who else) all getting mono: stop making out with each other guys! =P

This is commonly known as glandular fever here in Europe - a friend of mine is just recovering from this illness - this is a most unpleasant condition and definitely takes a while to recover from.

People with Mono get enlarged spleens which can rupture if they are hit.
I am surprised that they are playing him at all.
