More on Mason

As you know, Steve Mason, is coming up to the Blue Jackets. Pascal Leclaire will be out longer than expected, and Norrena hasn’t been that good for us, and Dan LaCosta hasn’t been given a chance, and was sent down when Mason was called up. Mason is not expected to play tomorrow night against the Oilers but start either Friday or Saturday.
Aaron Portzline spoke to Scott Howson and Coach Hitchcock about Mason’s call up, and here’s part of it via the Crunch Hockey Blog.
Howson:
“He went to the AHL and is top three in the league in a lot of categories. He’s played very well in some very tough buildings.
“We’ve got three games in four days and five games in eight. So we need another goaltender. And, right now, Leclaire’s not going to be ready until next week. We don’t think he’s going to be ready for the weekend (as originally hoped).”
Hitchcock:
“He’s going to practice with us on game day Wednesday, and he’ll have a good practice against NHL players on Thursday. So we’ll look at him for Friday or Saturday, we’re not sure which yet.
“It’ll be good to see him. He’s playing great. He’s earned a shot, and we need a goaltender.”
So what happens with Mason after the call up? If he is the next Carey Price, or is better than Carey Price, what happens then? We place Norrena on waivers to go to Syracuse? Do we trade Norrena? Would we get anything really for him? If Mason is that good, what about Leclaire will they share the starts or will Mason take over?
It’ll be nice to see Mason actually play, and to see how the boys play with him in net…at this point, it couldn’t get much worse…could it?

I think If Mason does well enough this year, and with all of Pascal’s injuries, I could see them possibly shopping him after this season’s over. They could probably get a big return if they dangle him in front of a team like Colorado, and getting a Wolski-Svatos/Liles like package.

Ugh. I know we really need a spark but this smacks of deep down desperation. I really wanted this kid to get a chance to develop as a pro at Syracuse. We have had player after player rushed to the big club and look what its gotten us over the years? Nothing other than Nash and I wonder how much better he would be if he’d had the chance to play a half a season learning the pro game. With this move its pretty clear that Howson is desperate. He knows that the fans are starting to walk away and not care. Several of the players appear to be not what we’d hoped. Now what happens if Mason stands on his head and loses a few. will we ruin his head too? If it was me I’d have worked a trade with Chicago for Khabibulin. We need a #1 goalie and they need cap room. We could have dumped a defenseman as well and both teams would be better. We could then trade Khabibulin at the deadline as he will be worth more then vs. today and maybe look to next year with Filatov and Russell back and being rid of Backman and Modin plus a few other slugs(manny?). Oh yeah where is that #1 center and #1 defenseman Howson (semi)promised us after last year?
