Power Play Struggles

Sorry that it took me so long to get this up, but I just had to take some time to think about the game against the Wild.  It’s not that I’m not impressed with what the Jackets showed against the Minnesota Wild the other night.  I really was impressed.  It’s just taking it to a shootout and then losing is all too familiar for me.  I know we have other things (POWER PLAY) to work on, but shouldn’t we at least try to score on the shootout?  Mason can’t stop them all ya know.

We came out of the weekend with three out of a possible four points.  That is GREAT!  We played hard, and were rewarded for our efforts.  I do have to wonder where we could be if our power play actually got going.  Granted we weren’t really given an opportunity on the power play against the Wild, but against other teams, we have been.

Aaron Portzline did an entire article on the Blue Jackets power play today.

Here are some of the more interesting points he made, along with my reaction.

*It’s at 11.9% - What does that say to me?  PATHETIC.
*Nine players have been given a shot at running the point. - What does that say to me?  Someone, anyone, help us.
*Claude Noel took over responsibility of the power play this season from assistant coach Gary Agnew. - What does this say to me?  Let’s hand it back to Agnew…please.

It doesn’t suck so bad, as long we’re winning, but, what about some of those games that we were playing great, and lost.  What if we had scored on one or two of those power plays?  We could be a lot higher up in the standings.

Anyway, I don’t want to complain too much, but at some point, it has to get better.

Here are some other random thoughts:

*Get the goat line back together.  I don’t like seeing Voracek not scoring.  Yes, even if that means Nash isn’t scoring.
*I like Brassard on the top line, but, I like the goat line way too much to have it broken up.
*Rusty Klesla is out at least a week, so we get to see OKT more often, and I am fine with that.
*Cal Clutterbuck for the Wild is a little disturber, and I really like him.
*Christian Backman is starting to make me nervous, like, nervous in the way Commodore made me nervous at the beginning of the season.  It seems like he is always making some mistake.

Those are my thoughts.  I also realized this weekend that I don’t have a favorite player on the Blue Jackets, which shocks me.  I guess I never really got over Foote leaving to get one.  So, now I’m in the market, mainly because I want a jersey for Christmas, and need to figure out whose I want.  Suggestions are welcome.

I’m actually hoping we see more and more of Mark Methot in Rusty’s absence - I honestly felt like he’s been doing better, paired with Tyutin, than Rusty.

I’m really torn about the goat line because it seems like Chimmer - Manny - Umberger’s actually clicking surprisingly well. I like Jake scoring, too, but I don’t know that I want to force chemistry with one line just to take it away on others.

Backman…oye. I wouldn’t be surprised that if the CBJ make any pre-deadline trades to shore up our points that Backman goes out with it, or otherwise is put on the hook for bait.

I wouldn’t rush to give the PP back to Agnew, either. It didnt’ exactly light the world on fire before…this is a situation where I’d be happier bringing a coach in from outside the organization to clean up the PP, just like Hitch did to help with the game film.
