Sixth Place

I feel like the Columbus Blue Jackets have become the Goonies.  They never say “die” or quit I guess you could say.  After beating the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night, the Jackets came back and got a victory against the Carolina Hurricanes.  The victory put us with 61 points, and sixth in the Western Conference.  The goal for this team is to be fifth, so we are getting there slowly but surely.  The game against Dallas tomorrow is a huge one for us.

But, more on the game last night.  Steve Mason played again for us, and showed us - again - why he is our number one goaltender.  He is leading the league in GAA with a 2.06, and seven shutouts.  Last night he got his 21st victory.  This kid just keeps getting better and better.  Imagine what he will be like a few seasons from now.

Mike Commodore, scored the opening goal of the game.  It’s fitting really, he put money on the board, and he gets the bragging rights against his former club.

Huselius had two goals and an assist on a night where Nash had three assists.  Nash is leading the team in points, and assists.  Huselius is second in assists and third, with 19 assists Jake Voracek.

Here are some of my thoughts on the game.

*In the dying minutes of the second period the Canes were all over us.  Good move by Hitchcock to call a time out and give our guys a breather.  We looked tired, but we survived the flurry and got to rest and go into the third up 2-0.

*What was up with Maurice pulling Cam Ward with 3:50 left when you’re down 4-1?  Huselius scored the EN to make it 5-1.

*Mason is amazing.  I have a new respect for him.  I had mono and I was down and out for over a month.  This kid hasn’t shown any signs of mono, and I am so proud of him.  It really is because of him (and Hitchcock getting EVERYTHING out of these boys) that we are where we are in the standings.

*I can’t say enough about Williams. He is noticeable on every shift, and I love his style of play especially with the “Flying J” line.  It’s almost making me not miss the “Goat Line” almost - not quite.

*Mike Commodore is awesome.  He was a great signing for this club and his leadership really are helping us down this stretch.

*Tyutin is one of my favorite defensemen to watch.  He continues to impress me, and honestly I don’t miss Zherdev at all anymore.

*Russell is growing more and more every day.  The stint in Syracuse and the number change was just what he needed.  He is logging more minutes, and has two goals and thirteen assists on the season.

This is an exciting time for Blue Jackets fans, we’ve never been in this place before.  We are rolling right along and have won our fourth game in a row.  Tomorrow night is a huge test for us.  It will be our third game in four nights against a team that has a game in hand, and that we are tied for points with.  Not to mention the fact that we struggle against the Stars.

We will also be without the services of Freddy Modin, who according to Puck-Rakers suffered a knee injury in the final moments of the game.  There is an MRI scheduled for today, so let’s hope it’s not serious and he will be back in the lineup soon.

And showing love to my FAVORITE WHL team, the Americans.  H/T to Teka.

Imagine what he will be a few seasons from now.

(edited the quote for my own selfish reasons.  Sorry Bethany.)

I’ll give that a shot.

A Detroit Red Wing.
