Steve Mason, Second Star

Steve Mason was named Second Star of the Week, and rightfully so.  Our rookie goaltender has three wins in his first three NHL starts with a .907 save % and a 2.60 GAA.  Like I said before the team is playing in front of him, and his calm demeanor helps the team a lot.  Norrena is one of my favorite players, but when he lets in a goal he gets extremely rattled and that shows, in the team, and obviously him.

Mason will get his fourth straight start Wednesday night against the Phoenix Coyotes.  So, if he wins and even if he doesn’t, I don’t see him going back to Syracuse.  Picard has now been sent to Syracuse, if Leclaire comes off IR we can still hold Mason up here, but then what.  I want to know what we’re doing with Norrena.  Here’s what Hitchcock said about Mason:

“With Mason’s play these last three games, he’s certainly giving everybody in this organization some strong food for thought, right across the board.”

Portzline also put this interesting stat in his article today.

He has allowed three even-strength goals, stopping 66 of 69 shots (.957 save percentage) during five-on-five play.

A .957 save percentage is ridiculously good, and that is one amazing stat, especially for goaltenders.  Maybe, just maybe Mason really is this years Carey Price?  And, maybe we should start a Vote for Mason Campaign?

Now if we could get our special teams going, life would be a lot better.  A power play goal would be outstanding.
