The Blue Jackets are off to the best start in franchise history. 5-1-0 and are sitting fifth in the Western Conference. The Blue Jackets have lost ONE game, it’s a nice change from previous seasons. The game last night, was great for a number of reasons, starting from the beginning when I found out that Kris Russell, had signed a three-year extension.
So let’s get down to the game.
The Hot
*Special teams were outstanding last night. The Blue Jackets have killed off 23 of 24 penalties and were five for five last night. They are leading the league in the penalty kill. Then the Blue Jackets scored not one but two power play goals. Rick Nash also added a short-handed goal on the night.
*Mason looked good again last night, that’s something that can be said almost any game.
*Roy is outstanding. While the Blue Jackets are without the service of Mike Commodore and Jan Hejda he has done a great job filling in, playing 18 minutes last night.
*Raffi Torres is a beast. He scored another power play goal, and is tied (with Nash) for most goals on the team with three goals. At the end of the game Torres was interviewed and he told Nash to “watch out.” Torres has been a great fit with the Blue Jackets
*Kris Russell signing the extension absolutely made the night, aside from the win, that may have been the best. He is young and he is developing into a great player. He has improved so much since his first game as a Jacket, that stint to Syracuse did so much for him.
*It was Hockey Fights Cancer night in Columbus. I saw tons of Salmons jerseys and was so touched by the human ribbon.
The Cold
*Filatov was scratched again. Hopefully he will play at some point on this roadie.
*To be honest, I was pretty happy with most of the game. The Jackets special teams were good. The goalie was good. Yeah, at times they didn’t look great, but they got the job done.
Quote of the night from Rick Nash:
“We’ve got a tight group,” Nash said. “We understand we’ve got to follow the game plan. We’ve got to outplay the other teams to win and that’s what we’re doing right now. We’ve been on the other end of the stick. We can’t get too high, because we know this can turn around quick.”
Stick to the game plan boys and let’s get some more wins on the road.
