The Legein Trade

Paul posted earlier about the trade between Philly and the Jackets.  Stefan Legein was sent to the Flyers for d-man, Michael Ratchuk.

Stefan has always been one of my favorite prospects, yeah, even with the “retirement” and everything.  Here’s the thing though, while I am sad that I won’t get to see Legein in a Blue Jackets jersey, I am so happy for him.  This is his chance to get a new start.  He will be in an entirely new environment, with new teammates.  Teammates that he didn’t let down, teammates who (in theory) won’t judge him for what happened while he was a Blue Jacket.

He gets to start over and I wish him nothing but the best.

But, what about that new guy?

Here is Michael Ratchuk according to Scott Howson:

“He’s a skilled defenseman,” Howson said. “I don’t think he’s put up numbers yet where you’d say he’s an offensive defenseman. But he can certainly transport the puck, and he’s an excellent skater.”

This should be a good move for the Crunch.  It looks like Ratchuk is pretty excited to be with the Crunch.

“We share a mutual excitement,” Ratchuk said. “They mentioned it would be a good fit for me as far as my style of play. They said the coaches (in Syracuse) will be on you to play smart. They want you to play to the scoreboard.”

All in all I think it was a great move for both organizations.

The BJs got a great addition in Ratchuk. The Flyers were very high on him and he’s made great strides over the last few years. Philly is suddenly stacked with defensive prospects, though, and the potential for Ratchuk to see NHL time diminished.
