Wow! What a game. Not necessarily the game I expected, but it was a great game. Every period brought its own challenges, and even felt like a completely different game. The highlight of the game for me, aside from the win of course, was the outstanding hit on Avery by Commodore. Jakub Jake Voracek scored his first NHL goal, Derick Brassard scored his second NHL goal, Murray scored, and Kristian Huselius scores his first goal as a Blue Jacket. The Jackets were up 4-2 with three minutes remaining then the Stars score twice to tie it up. Overtime begins, and the Jackets looked…decent. With 30 seconds left, our Captain, took it upon himself, and won the game for us, with a beautiful wrister that went right by Turco.
The game was a game that we should have had in regulation. But, we did show character, by coming back and winning the game in overtime.
The Voracek goal may have been the craziest goal I have ever seen, no I take that back, it is up there though. It went in and out so fast that nobody noticed. Finally play stopped, and they reviewed it, and it was a goal. Voracek looked so relieved, and who can blame him? Getting your first NHL goal in the first period of your first game? That’s great for the kid, who is a Calder trophy contender for sure. Jared Boll and Krys Barch went at it in one of the strangest fights I have ever seen, it went on for what felt like five minutes, and finally the refs stepped in. I immediately thought the worst for Boll’s hand as he went off the ice to have it looked at. It looked pretty purple, and disgusting, but Boll came back or the game.
The second period was one of the strangest periods I have ever seen, the penalties, and no-calls were a bit ridiculous, and I kept getting texts from Cat who was lucky enough to be at the game, saying who the refs were crazy. Michael Peca got kicked out of the game, and I can’t for the life of me figure out why, and in talking to Cat, she has no idea either. The only thing I remember is that the announcer said that Peca was having a heated conversation with the refs. UPDATE: Apparently Peca was arguing a non-call, with one of the ref’s who gave him a misconduct and told him to sit on the bench. Peca then went to another ref who gave him a game misconduct, and he was finished for the game. Apparently one of the refs said Peca’s stick hit him along the boards. The Jackets spent too much time in the second period in the penalty box. Brenden Morrow tied the game up for the Stars, and James Neal scored his first NHL goal.
The third period is when the Jackets came back to their senses, and Huselius tied the game up. Then Andrew Murray scored the go ahead goal. The Blue Jackets looked calm and looked like they were just going to take the lead and run with it with Derick Brassard scoring the fourth goal of the game. Then the Jackets started looking rough, they allowed Brad Richards to score a goal to make the game 4-3, I knew what was coming. The fourth goal came off of Trevor Daley and the Blue Jackets finally came back to their senses. We went into overtime, and finally won the game thanks to Rick Nash.
My three stars for the night are:
1. Jake Voracek, the kid had a goal and an assist in his first NHL game, oh yeah, I forgot to mention that he only played 9:09.
2. Stephane Robidas, he played 28:39 and had four shots on goal and three assists, that is a long time to be on the ice.
3. Jason Chimera, I know, but he was all over the ice tonight, and had two assists. He even went after Sean Avery went he laid an extra tap on Pascal Leclaire.
I will have more on the game tomorrow, it’s been a rough day with a sick three year old. Also, a big congrats to Nikita Filatov for scoring his first professional goal tonight, can’t wait for you to be up here in Columbus!
