Sometimes when you least expect it…

Something great happens. Not that anything great has happened with the Blue Jackets today, well yet. Something is going to happen good with us. You can’t be on a downward spiral forever, eventually you will come out, and everything will be okay. It’s something I tell myself everyday, not because of my team, but because life in general is hard.
This is going to get a little personal, but what the heck, this is my blog and I can write what I want, and eventually I will get to the point.

Mason to Debut!!
by Bethany on 10/29/08 at 07:00 PM ET

Steve Mason is making his professional debut tonight in Grand Rapids, Michigan. How excited am I? Very excited. With Pazzy having so many ankle issues, it makes fans excited for that goaltender of the future. Also playing for the Crunch tonight are Nikita Filatov and Kris Russell. Scott Howson will be in attendance, not just for Mason, but to get a look at Filatov and Russell.
In other exciting news Raffi Torres could be playing as soon as Saturday. That is a big deal for our hockey club. Getting Torres healthy is a big step in getting the club going again. Torres may not be a big scorer, but he’s a big scorer and is a huge energy guy. With Torres likely coming back that means that we will be losing a winger…who will it be Picard or Dorsett? Only time will tell, but Picard has to be put through waivers in order to be sent to Syracuse.

Nash down the Middle?

Please tell me that this is just in practice.
The top line that the Blue Jackets are practicing as are Chimera-Nash-Huselius. Yup, Nash is centering the top line.
I don’t know that Nash has ever played center, I would have to look into it, but if you remember Modin was moved to center, as was Zherdev. More, when Puck-Rakers updates it.

50 Minutes is Not Enough
by Bethany on 10/28/08 at 11:52 AM ET

The Blue Jackets can play 50 minutes of great hockey, but they haven’t proven that they can play a complete hockey game. Here’s Hitchcock on the game.
“For us to win we had to play 60 minutes full out of great hockey and we played 50 minutes (tonight), just like we did in Minnesota. It’s not good enough - you’ve got to win games 2-1.”
We controlled most of the game. The Ducks got on the board first, and then Andrew Murray got a shorthanded opportunity, he missed, but given another opportunity he gave the puck to Novotny, and we scored our first shorthanded goal of the season. Then, the goat line went to work, Brassard scored with assists going to Chimera and Voracek. We were winning 2-1 until halfway through the third period, then our world collapsed, or so it seemed.

Pazzy to IR, Russell down, and Boll back!

Goodness, the Jackets have been busy. Dan LaCosta has been called up, and that means Pazzy is out. He is getting an MRI to see what is going on with the ankle, he keeps hurting it over and over again. Leclaire has been moved to the injured reserve, so he is out for at least the next three games. Steve Mason better prepare himself, because he’s going to be up here soon if this keeps happening. Kris Russell has been sent to Syracuse also. He wasn’t playing up here, and it’s better he play then sit in the press box. Here is Howson on the decision to move him down.
“It’s never great for a young player not to play,” Howson said. “We told him it’s a temporary stay. Go have fun playing hockey.”
He will be playing games on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday and will then hopefully be recalled to the Jackets. Again though, you never know.

Pazzy Injured and a Loss
by Bethany on 10/26/08 at 11:48 AM ET

Pascal Leclaire was injured in the first period and left with 14:33 remaining in the second, due to an apparent ankle sprain. It’s going to be looked at again today, and his status is unknown for tomorrow’s game against the Anaheim Ducks is unknown. If Leclaire is out expect LaCosta to come back up, and Norrena to get the start on Tuesday.
Anyway, onto the game. The Blue Jackets took three penalties in the first period and were able to kill them all off, unfortunately for the Blue Jackets, they let in a goal towards the end of the first period. It’s never a good thing when you give up a goal in the last minute of a period. The Minnesota Wild stayed perfect on the penalty kill last night. Of course they only took two penalties, but man in six games they have not allowed one power play goal, that is impressive.

The Glass is Half Full

Okay, so the loss last night was bad and our team desperately needs to change things up a bit to start playing well. However, it is not the end of the world, and just because we have lost 4 out of 7 games doesn’t mean we’re going to miss the playoffs. We’re playing our eighth game tonight, it is EARLY in the season. Way too early to be bringing up things like your prediction for the playoffs. I am surprised at some of the messages I have been receiving thinking that the sky is falling, you’d think that we were in the same position as the Flyers who just won their first game last night. I know our team hasn’t played a complete hockey game yet, but it will happen.
Anyway, now that’s out of the way. We’re playing the Minnesota Wild tonight and Pascal Leclaire is in net again tonight. The defensive pairings stay the same, and here are the forward lines.

Zherdev’s Triumphant Return
by Bethany on 10/24/08 at 09:47 PM ET

Okay, so I missed the first period due to being on the road, and hitting every ounce of traffic ever. But, thankfully I made it home for the second period. The first period appeared to be interesting, with Voracek scoring his third goal of the season. Also, don’t boo Zherdev. He was traded, he didn’t leave by choice. It’s classless, save your boo’s for someone that matters, yes, you know who I am talking about.
The second period got underway, and the Blue Jackets went down 2-1. Daniel Girardi and and Brandon Dubinsky scored the goals for the Rangers. Both goals, had an assist from, you guessed it, Nikolai Zherdev. A scary moment happened in the second, before the scoring took place, with Rangers coach Tom Renney took a stick, and was helped to the back, and did not return. Rick Nash also had a breakaway and missed it. Rick Nash is now 0 for 6 on the breakaways on the season…not that I’m counting.

Zherdev (and Fritsche) Return!
by Bethany on 10/24/08 at 01:26 PM ET

Well, it’s here. Game day against the New York Rangers, it’s not so much that tonights game is going to be about playing the Rangers. It’s about the return of Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche, and about Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman playing their old club. Zherdev and Fritsche are going to want to put on a show for the home crowd, and Tyutin and Backman are going to try and keep the Rangers in check.
It’s going to be a big test for the Blue Jackets to keep everything together and to play three solid periods of hockey. The Blue Jackets need a win tonight to stay above .500. Our focus needs to be putting pucks on the net, communication, and playing smart hockey. The Rangers have a potent offense and can score at any time, while their power play may be ranked 22nd in the league, that doesn’t mean they can’t score. The Rangers goaltender, Lundqvist is one of the best in the league, the more pucks we throw at him the better off we will be.

Mason to Syracuse

Steve Mason has been sent to the Syracuse Crunch. According to Lindsay Kramer he will be backing up on Friday night, and they’re not sure if he is going to play Saturday or not. According to Portzline, he is not going to play this weekend, you don’t want to push him into that, especially since he hasn’t seen game action since he injured his knee in April.
“The knee feels great. It’s just a matter of getting my timing,’’ he said before leaving Columbus on Thursday. “I didn’t get a whole lot of practice time in Columbus. I’m looking forward to getting some practice in Syracuse. Right now, I just have to get comfortable on the ice again.’‘
Good luck Steve, all of us are rooting for you to be in a Blue Jackets sweater sooner rather than later. To make room for Mason, Sebastian Dahm has been sent to Johnstown.

The Blue Jackets Help
by Bethany on 10/23/08 at 01:41 PM ET

Sometimes, you don’t need to worry about the goals, the shutouts, and the struggling defense, you need to worry about something else. Today the Blue Jackets helped out Flashes of Hope. It’s a non-profit organization that takes photographs of children fighting cancer and other potentially fatal diseases. Rick Nash, Fredrik Modin, Jared Boll, and Jason Chimera went in to take pictures with the kids.
I think this is something that everyone can relate to. We all know someone who has been affected by a life threatening disease. For me, it was my Uncle, who passed away three years ago in February with complications stemming from his leukemia. It was a great way for the Blue Jackets to do something meaningful and to help these kids have a reason to smile, in the toughest time of their young lives.

I think saying “Undefeated at Home” is a little much at this point. However, we are 2-0 at home, very exciting! Derek Dorsett scored the game winning goal, his first in the NHL and against one of the best goaltenders in the league. Here’s Dorsett on his first goal:
“It was a huge relief, probably one of the biggest celebrations I’ve done after a goal. It’s just really exciting and I’m glad that I got it.”
We’re glad you got it too Derek. The Blue Jackets played two really great periods, and had a bit of a breakdown in the third, and Pascal Leclaire was outstanding.

Puck Daddy Chats with Commodore
by Bethany on 10/21/08 at 03:32 PM ET

So, to further clear the air, Puck Daddy talks to Mike Commodore about the photograph. In all honesty, it’s a must read. Commodore is a funny guy.
Does he recall what the mysterious book on the bed may have been? “No. No I don’t. Although if I look at it ... hold on, it’s posted up over here in the room.”
Commodore walked over to an unspecified location in the Blue Jackets locker room, reviewed the posted photo, and returned.
“If I had to guess, it may have been a Vince Flynn book,” he said, regarding the best-selling pop fiction author. “It’s just kinda like a police kinda thriller.”
So someone put the photo up in the room in Columbus, huh?
“We had a media day here, about how to handle the media. It was nice timing with that picture coming out. That is now Exhibit A,” Commodore said with a laugh. “I’m setting an example for the young guys on what not to do. Being a good leader here.”

Jackets Searching for Interim Goalie Coach
by Bethany on 10/20/08 at 03:35 PM ET

The Blue Jackets are looking to add an interim goalie coach. Clint Malarchuk shot himself in the chin, and the Blue Jackets are now searching for someone to replace him temporarily as no decision has been made on his long term future with the club. According to Puck-Rakers a decision could be made in the next two weeks.
And, in strange news Kris Russell practiced as a forward. Why, you may ask? Nobody really knows. Portzline guesses that Hitch wants to keep Methot and/or Tollefsen in the lineup. They both were a plus-1 on the night. Random fact about Kris Russell, his twin brother, Ryan Russell is playing for the Hamilton Bulldogs as a center.

Blackout Lifted!
by Bethany on 10/20/08 at 12:49 PM ET

The Blue Jackets took a page out of the Sharks and Coyotes books when they released today that they agreed to lift the local blackout! From the Blue Jackets:
COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets and FOX Sports Ohio announced October 20 that they have reached an agreement to have the NHL Center Ice local blackout lifted for the six games not scheduled to be televised by FOX Sports Ohio. The blackout will be lifted on all U.S. Center Ice providers, including DirecTV, Echostar (Dish Network) and iN DEMAND (digital cable).
The lifting of the blackout will allow Blue Jackets fans who subscribe to the NHL Center Ice package to view all 82 of the team’s regular season games. FOX Sports Ohio is carrying 75 games live this season, while the February 3rd game vs. St. Louis will be televised live on VERSUS. The six games affected by the blackout lift are: October 21 vs. Vancouver, October 25 at Minnesota, November 18 vs. Edmonton, December 4 at San Jose, December 29 at Los Angeles and March 13 at Chicago.
That means that I will be able to watch all 82 games! Also, just wanted to show the tribute to Mr. Mac.

I really don’t want to talk about the game from last night, which is probably why it took me until now to even post about it. Coming off a huge home opener win, we had one of the worst efforts I have seen from the Blue Jackets. Fredrik Norrena looked absolutely awful in net, and he admitted it.
“I didn’t stop anything.”
It was definitely a team loss though. We weren’t even trying, and even though we had three goals, it should have just been a shutout as far as I’m concerned. If we are going to make the playoffs we have to start playing better as a team. The goaltenders, the defense, and the forwards. We don’t have an excuse to be out of a game ever, we have two perfectly qualified goaltenders, we have a blue line that shouldn’t hurt us (Tyutin was a minus-3, Klesla was a minus-4 last night), and we have forwards that are able to score.

Time for the rematch. The game last night is forgotten, for the most part. We are 1-0 with the Predators, and that is all that matters. Just ask Mike Commodore.
“To be honest I really don’t care. As far as I’m concerned I’m 1-0 as a Blue Jacket against Nashville. I know a lot of past times were tough and the obviously dominated the series and that counts for something for sure, good for them, but as far as I’m concerned this is my first year here and whatever happened last year and years prior.”
It’s good to have that type of attitude in the room. We all know what our record is against the Predators, it’s not a secret. At home the Preds have an 18-3-2 record against us, since we came into the league. It’s going to be a tough fight tonight, but we know we have the skill to do it.

Wow. That’s all I can say after the home opener against the Nashville Predators. But, before I get into the game, I have to thank Alanah for posting about Peca’s suspension for me (I will have more on it tomorrow), while I was away. I really appreciate it.
The game started off great, with an amazing tribute to Mr. Mac. It was a little sad, but I think it definitely got the boys, especially those who have been here for a while motivated to get the win for him. Mr. Mac would have loved tonights game, everyone (aside from Preds fans I’m sure) left happy. Hitch described the game best when he said:
“It felt bizarre. It was entertaining as hell and wildly exciting and that’s probably what it’s going to be for a little while - a few more like this and they are going to put us in the loony bin. It’s exciting. We’re never going to be out of a game with this team.”

The Jackets are opening up at home tonight against the Nashville Predators. It should be a good game, I am heading up to the game and will be cheering on my boys, somewhere in the 200 level, I have no clue where our seats are. But, if you see me, say hello!
The Jackets always have a hard time with the Predators, don’t believe me? We won exactly ONE game against them in the last TWO SEASONS. The Jackets are going to have to play solid hockey, finish their checks, and ignore Tootoo (and stay out of the box) in order to win. It will be great to see Nikita on the ice, and to see how he does against a tough Nashville opponent.
I’m sorry that this post is so rushed but I have to get on the road. Consider this an open post to let your frustrations about the Preds out, and to talk some Jackets hockey if you like.

Malarchuk
by Bethany on 10/16/08 at 07:49 PM ET
Comments (0)
This is from Jim Kelley at Sports Illustrated. He feels that we need to help Malarchuk. While I agree, definitely, I do also think that we need to do what is best for our hockey club. Scott Howson has a very difficult decision on his hands. I would not want to be in his shoes when it comes to making it. I really don’t know what else to say. It’s a horrible situation, and all I can say is that I hope he gets better soon, and gets the help that he needs.
But what the Jackets could do is what Malarchuk has tried to do most of his life: they could acknowledge that a member of their franchise, a part of their extended family, has a problem. They could allow him the time and professional help he needs to deal with his latest problem and they could at least consider assisting him, after a suitable period of recovery, in not only continuing his work with their goaltending talent, but speaking out about the difficulties of coping with a type of illness that far too many of us try to ignore.
Surely that would take courage. It would also mean taking a road less traveled. Hopefully, GM Scott Howson’s recent visit to Nevada to assess the situation is a step in that direction.
There would be risks, of course, but helping Malarchuk wouldn’t just be the right thing to do, it would be the courageous thing. He might have setbacks that create a public relations problem. It’s also possible that Malarchuk, knowing he has no reason to fear for his livelihood, would understand that he is no longer alone in his fight. He could take strength from that and perhaps recover faster and more completely than if he were to be abandoned at a time when he needs his hockey connection most.

Expect a ruling on Peca tomorrow morning. Michael Peca, his agent, Don Meehan, Scott Howson, the four on-ice officials, members of the NHLPA, and NHL representatives met today to discuss Peca’s suspension. Apparently there was a new over-head video of the incident, which showed Peca grabbing the officials arm. Never once was it mentioned that Peca hit the ref with his stick, which is good news. I will post more when the verdict on Peca is out.

Three games in, let’s talk about it…
by Bethany on 10/16/08 at 02:34 PM ET

The Blue Jackets have now played three games and are getting ready to open up at home tomorrow night, against the Nashville Predators. Let’s talk about the things that are working for the Blue Jackets.
The “goat” line, I am a huge fan of that name for the record. Chimera, Brassard, and Voracek are absolutely tearing it up for the Blue Jackets, that line is working, and they look great together. Brassard has two goals and one assist and is a plus-3. Chimera is leading the team in assists, and is a plus-2, and Voracek has a goal and an assist and is a plus-1.
Rick Nash has taken it upon himself to carry the team, the only problem is he can’t score. He has had four breakaways and has been unable to capitalize on them. Knowing Nash and how his goals tend to come in spirts, He has scored one goal, and has sixteen shots on goal. Against San Jose the Nash, Umberger, and Huselius line had 19 shots, the team as a whole had 33. They are bound to get hot and start scoring.

Nikita Filatov is being recalled, and will be playing in the home opener on Friday!! This is HUGE news for Blue Jackets fans, and of course it doesn’t come without a cost. Jared Boll is out with a head and neck issues, I’m with Portzline when he says Boll hasn’t been right since the fight in Dallas.
Now, onto the game last night. We had a good night on the power play, we were able to score two goals, which is a great thing. HOWEVER, when your power play allows TWO short-handed goals you have a serious problem on your hand. Pascal Leclaire wasn’t as good as he should have been, but he can’t be blamed for all the goals. The Jackets were able to keep the penalties they took at a minimum, but that did not help.

The first meeting of Jody Shelley and his old club has come and gone, but we still enjoy seeing Jody. He still has quite the fanbase in Ohio. By the way, congrats Jody and Mandy Shelley!! They will be welcoming their first child into the world sometime around November 14th.
Michael Peca has his hearing on Thursday at 11 a.m. and according to Aaron Portzline who met with Rimmer between the first and second period, it is probably going to be reduced to a three game suspension, which is great news for the Blue Jackets. The final word will come on Thursday though, so let’s not get our hopes up just yet.
And, Machinehead is now retired…from Blue Jackets games at least. Hooray!! They are not revealing what the new song will be, but apparently the players had a say in it. I will let you know Friday what I hear!
Now, onto the game.

I had every intention of talking more about the Malarchuk and Peca situation, but with the death of Alexei Cherepanov it all seems so irrelevant. He was too young to die, and had so much ahead of him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the New York Rangers organization.
On that horrible note, here’s what is going on in the world of the Blue Jackets.

Jackets Lose to Coyotes
by Bethany on 10/12/08 at 12:41 AM ET

The Blue Jackets missed Michael Peca right from the beginning as one by one the Blue Jackets headed to the penalty box. The game was practically handed to the Coyotes, without much of a fight from any of the Blue Jackets players. The Jackets couldn’t get anything going, and the only bright spots were Pascal Leclaire who made some great saves, Rick Nash who tried to carry the team but had no luck getting anything into the net, and Derick Brassard who scored the lone goal for the Blue Jackets. Luckily, it’s a long season and we still have 80 more games to go and if we keep taking all these penalties it’s going to be a REALLLLLY long season.

Peca is in Trouble

Puck-Rakers is reporting that Michael Peca is facing a multiple game suspension for the incident that occured last night in Dallas. Apparently he made contact with an official, it was not shown on the air so I have not seen what happened, and Cat who was at the game doesn’t remember anything either. The suspension is supposed to be announced later on today and Peca is apparently going to appeal the decision. I will update this post as I get more information.
UPDATE: Peca has been suspended indefinitely by the NHL. He has appealed that decision and will have a trial early this coming week. He could be suspended a minimum of 10 games. Peca claims he only grabbed the officials arm to slow him down, the official is claiming Peca hit him with his stick. Here’s Peca on what happened:
“The only contact was me grabbing his arm to slow him down,” Peca said, “because he was skating away and I wanted to plead my case.
“They’ve claiming I hit (a) linesman with my stick after I hit the glass with it, which is completely false.”
“I was so worked up,” Peca said. “We poured our hearts into that 5-on-3. When the guy who commits the foul ends up scoring the goal … you have that much energy and pride invested in that situation, you get a little heated.
“For me, I’m pretty mild mannered. For me to get that upset … it takes a lot to get me that upset. I don’t like to think that I talk to officials like that. I regret some of the things I said. But I can’t regret anything to do with abuse of an official, because I didn’t abuse an official.”
If he is suspended for the 10 games or more, it’s going to be rough on the Jackets. Peca is not the type of player to strike an official. I suppose now we wait.
UPDATE: Puck Stops Here has a video of the incident, you can barely see Peca touch the official.

Wow! What a game. Not necessarily the game I expected, but it was a great game. Every period brought its own challenges, and even felt like a completely different game. The highlight of the game for me, aside from the win of course, was the outstanding hit on Avery by Commodore. Jakub Jake Voracek scored his first NHL goal, Derick Brassard scored his second NHL goal, Murray scored, and Kristian Huselius scores his first goal as a Blue Jacket. The Jackets were up 4-2 with three minutes remaining then the Stars score twice to tie it up. Overtime begins, and the Jackets looked…decent. With 30 seconds left, our Captain, took it upon himself, and won the game for us, with a beautiful wrister that went right by Turco.
The game was a game that we should have had in regulation. But, we did show character, by coming back and winning the game in overtime.

Update on Malarchuk
by Bethany on 10/09/08 at 09:44 PM ET

The men of Puck-Rakers have been keeping us up to date on the Clint Malarchuk situation. Here is the latest.
Blue Jackets goaltending coach Clint Malarchuk is recovering from a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the chin that he suffered Tuesday afternoon at his Nevada ranch.
His wife, Joan, told police the shooting was accidental.
The former NHL goaltender, perhaps best known for having his jugular vein severed during a 1989 game in Buffalo, was found by police bleeding profusely from the mouth and chin after he shot himself with a 22-caliber rifle, according to a Douglas County Sheriff’s report.
All the best to Clint and his family at this time, and I hope he makes a quick recovery.

Malhotra on IR & Predictions
by Bethany on 10/09/08 at 02:31 PM ET

Center Manny Malhotra has been put on injured reserve. He will not be playing tomorrow night in Dallas, Derek Dorsett is heading to Dallas with the team. Not exactly the way we want to start the season, but what can you do?
The season opens tonight for the NHL in North America, the Jackets however don’t play until tomorrow. There are so many questions that come with this season. Not just with the Blue Jackets, but with all the teams. The Dispatch has an excellent preview up for the season not just for the Jackets, but for the entire league.
The Jackets are such a crazy team, it’s hard to preview them. You never know what to expect, and usually the thing you think is least likely to happen, does. Here are some of my predictions for the season for the Jackets.

Filatov to Syracuse
by Bethany on 10/08/08 at 01:37 PM ET

Nikita Filatov was assigned to the Syracuse along with Derek Dorsett. Aaron Rome, Craig MacDonald, and Derek MacKenzie also cleared waivers and are being assigned to the Crunch.
The Russian Federation hasn’t processed Filatov’s papers so that he can play for the Sudbury Wolves. Filatov is able to be called up at any time by playing for Syracuse. It’s going to be interesting to see how he does down there. I have no doubt he will do well, but it’s always fun to watch a player develop. With both Filatov and Dorsett being assigned to Syracuse that means that Manny Malhotra might be ready to go Friday, even though he didn’t practice today.

The ‘Hitchionary’

Michael Arace put out one of the funniest (to me at least) articles that I have seen in quite some time.
He took words that Ken Hitchcock uses ALL the time, and turned them into a bit of a dictionary to get us ready for hockey season, the result….Hitchionary.
Below are some of the words included, but I urge you to read it all.

The Decision Has Been Made
by Bethany on 10/07/08 at 01:11 PM ET

The Blue Jackets have placed Aaron Rome, Derek MacKenzie, and Craig MacDonald on waivers. Teams will have until noon tomorrow to pick them up off of waivers, if they are not picked up, they will be sent to Syracuse. I sincerely hope that Rome isn’t picked up, he’s such a great defenseman, and I still think he should have had that 8th spot, which goes to Marc Methot.
It’s a sad day for this Blue Jackets blogger.

Filatov Steals the Show

Rookie Nikita Filatov was all over the ice on Sunday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He scored the first goal of the game, and then ended up with the game winner in the shootout.
The Blue Jackets fell behind 4-2 in the third, and with less than three minutes left Jake Voracek and Jason Chimera scored fifteen seconds apart to tie the game up. Fredrik Norrena was in net for for the first two periods, then Dan LaCosta was called in for the third. He stopped a Jason Blake breakaway and was solid in the shootout stopping all the shots he faced.

Matvichuk Released

The Blue Jackets released Richard Matvichuk from his tryout today. He is hoping to get on with another club. He was trying to earn a spot on a team with an already packed blue line. He had a decent camp and was good in the preseason. Best of luck to him.

The preseason is finally coming to an end. After the game tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the roster will go from 31 to 23 players. It’s crazy to think that hockey season has snuck up on us so fast. Anyway, onto the game tonight, I am pretty sure it will be on the Leafs site but I will keep you posted.
The Maple Leafs are coming off of a tough loss last night to the Detroit Red Wings. Here’s their lineup for tonight:

Jackets assign four to Syracuse
by Bethany on 10/04/08 at 01:09 PM ET

The Blue Jackets announced today that they have assigned four players to Syracuse. Tom Sestito, Adam Pineault, Clay Wilson, and Grant Clitsome.
That narrows the “replacement” for Torres down to Filatov, Picard, and Dorsett. Filatov is expected to play Monday in Toronto, he was taken out of the lineup last night because the Wild dressed some of their big guys, and according to Puck-Rakers the Jackets “didn’t want him to get his head knocked off.” That makes sense.
We still haven’t heard really who they are going to have replace Torres, and I still think Filatov will stay up for a few games at least just so we can get a better look at the kid.

Victory against the Wild!

Wow, what an amazing game! Okay, so maybe it wasn’t the most exciting first period, but it was great to see our team working as a team. Here are some random tidbits from the game.
I said this before, Pazzy sprained an ankle when Boogaard went into the net. Hitchcock said in his post game that Pazzy could have finished the game, but they put Norrena in just to be safe. Umberger took a slash to the finger, he will be back practicing with the team on Tuesday. Leclaire will be back practicing with the team also Tuesday. Hitch also said that the team will be back to 100% aside from Torres come Tuesday. Boll did have an ice pack on his hand in the locker room after the game, I don’t know what is going on with him and, I am sure we will be updated today.

There aren’t too many fans here, but the one’s that are, are being quite loud.
Also, did I mention that this is my first preseason game…ever. Because, if I didn’t, it totally is.

Filatov Debuts

Nikita Filatov made his long awaited debut. It was a 5-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, but he’s still happy, that he played at least.
“I was so excited because I was waiting for this moment for a long time because of my injury. I’m happy because it was my first game, but to lose is not so good emotions.”
It’s okay Nikita, it was only a preseason game, you will have many more games to play, and win in.

And so it begins

The Blue Jackets have a tendency to lose players due to injury more often than not. Derick Brassard is not an exception to that, the young center who was destined to play with Nash and Huselius, is suffering from flu like symptoms. But, according to Puck-Rakers it could be code for something else, like a concussion. Not good news. Let’s hope it really is flu like symptoms and not a concussion.
Also, Maksim Mayorov is being assigned to Syracuse. The Syracuse Crunch start their practices today.
The Blue Jackets will be battling with the Buffalo Sabres tomorrow night at home, and it is possible that Filatov will make his debut, if not tomorrow then definitely Friday. More later.

Oh those Preds.

The Nashville Predators beat the Columbus Blue Jackets last night. The final score of 3-1 Preds doesn’t do a lot of justice to what actually happened in the game. The Jackets dressed one of their top six forwards, RJ Umberger, and we didn’t dress any of our top four defensemen. Two of the three Predators goals were scored on the power play. It was a tough night for the Jackets as Tootoo seemed to get under the skin of everyone. He did his job extremely well last night. He never dropped the gloves, on order from Barry Trotz, who said:
``It was a physical game and obviously they’ve been targeting Jordin the last two nights,’’ Trotz said. ``I basically put the no-fighting (restriction) on Jordin. There’s no sense fighting some guy that will not be in the league.’’
He was talking about Jon “Nasty” Mirasty. I’m sure there are a couple of regulars who wouldn’t have mind to throw down with him, Boll if his arm wasn’t still on the mend and Tollefson who already had one fight under his belt. However, October 17th will be here soon enough, and Tootoo will be against a lineup of Jackets who won’t mind dropping the gloves.

For tonight, the bragging rights are mine.

The Blue Jackets won the game against the Predators. A game that saw the Blue Jackets score four goals. The Predators were up 2-1, and the Jackets scored three goals in a row, from Voracek, Murray, and Huselius. The Preds tried to make a come back with a goal from Peters.
It’s nice to say we won a game against Nashville. Again, we don’t do it often so when we do, even if it is just a preseason game, it’s a BIG deal. I found this quote from Trotz interesting, it’s his response to Hitch putting in Nasty.
“You can call it gamesmanship or whatever. There are things we want to do in Nashville, so we’ll go about our business. I’m sure Hitch is doing the same thing. He’s trying to change certain things in Columbus, attitudes or whatever, so his message to his team will be a lot different than my message to my team. I’m trying to sort out some of our positions of competition. That’s priority number one in these first three games.
“So we’ll treat it as a regular preseason game, nothing special. If they want to make it a big deal, they have a different message than us. We’re just going to go up there and do our thing.”

Time for the Preds…already??

The Blue Jackets are playing the Nashville Predators tonight at home. It’s the preseason home opener and the Blue Jackets are bringing out the big players for this game. The Predators rivalry is an interesting one to say the least. We only beat the Predators ONCE last season, and the season before that, we never beat them. No one is okay with this, and that’s why, this is our lineup for tonight:
