There are two more games left in February. If the Jackets keep playing the way they’re playing, there’s no doubt that we’re going to make the playoffs. But, the race is tight right now, really tight.
5. Vancouver Canucks ~ 68
6. Columbus Blue Jackets ~ 66
7. Dallas Starsc~ 65
8. Minnesota Wild ~ 64
9. Edmonton Oilers ~ 63
10. Anaheim Ducks ~ 63
11. Nashville Predators ~ 60
12. Los Angeles Kings ~ 59
13. Phoenix Coyotes ~ 59
14. St. Louis Blues ~ 58
15. Colorado Avalanche ~ 57
Eleven points separate the last place team from the fifth place team. This road trip is going to be huge for us. We all have to step up and play our best hockey possible. This road trip has to be successful. There will be a live blog for every game on this road trip, right here.

Six in Nine

Sometimes you have the highs, and then you have the lows. The game on Saturday was one of the worst games I have ever seen the boys play. They finished their sixth game in nine days with a loss to the Anaheim Ducks, who had played the night before.
I couldn’t be prouder of this team. We got NINE out of a possible twelve points, that’s nothing to be ashamed of. Back in the day, we would have considered ourselves lucky to get out of this stretch with 6 points. But, the way we lost was what was disappointing. They just weren’t in the game last night.

Moving right along

The Blue Jackets beat the St. Louis Blues last night to move up to sixth in the Western Conference. They played the game for 40 minutes and then the final period, as Hitch said, “Played the score.” They almost gave the Blues a point, but were able to pull it out, thanks to Steve Mason.
The third period was pathetic, we sat back and let the Blues score two goals to make it a one goal game. It was unacceptable, and one of the periods that make Hitchcock “hate coaching.”

The Jackets lost in a skill competition last night. RJ Umberger was an absolute beast for the Blue Jackets last night. He set a franchise record by scoring two goals 89 seconds apart. It was a game that the Jackets should have won. We had every opportunity to win, but we didn’t capitalize on our chances - shocker, I know.

Sixth Place

I feel like the Columbus Blue Jackets have become the Goonies. They never say “die” or quit I guess you could say. After beating the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night, the Jackets came back and got a victory against the Carolina Hurricanes. The victory put us with 61 points, and sixth in the Western Conference. The goal for this team is to be fifth, so we are getting there slowly but surely. The game against Dallas tomorrow is a huge one for us.
But, more on the game last night. Steve Mason played again for us, and showed us - again - why he is our number one goaltender. He is leading the league in GAA with a 2.06, and seven shutouts. Last night he got his 21st victory. This kid just keeps getting better and better. Imagine what he will be like a few seasons from now.

Two times in a row

Steve Mason is back in all his glory. I got home from work pretty excited to turn on the game, only to see the Red Wings tie it up at 2, I immediately turned off the game and made other plans. I am pretty superstitious when it comes to things like that. I was in the movies watching Friday the 13th when I got a text letting me know that my boys had pulled out the win. I couldn’t have been happier.
The Jackets have beat the Sharks and the Wings twice in a row.

It’s Friday the 13th, the Blue Jackets have sent goaltender Dan LaCosta down to Syracuse and you know what that means…he’s back!! Steve Mason, the Blue Jackets savior, no longer has mono, and will be starting against the Red Wings tonight.
Which I guess isn’t good news for Henrik Zetterberg. In a recent media call here’s how it went.
Reporter: “Who has been the toughest goaltender you’ve faced this season, and why?”
Zetterberg: “Well, the toughest goaltender we faced this year you know what? I will say Columbus.”
Reporter: “Steve Mason.”

The last month or so, I have had so much on my mind that it’s started to affect my sleep. So, I lay around at night and I tend to think about things that make me happy. Family, friends, you name it, it runs through my mind at some point in the night.
So, last night as I was laying in bed, I came up with a theory.

A sweep, a sweep!
by Bethany on 02/11/09 at 09:58 PM ET

My favorite part of the season so far? Sweeping the season series against the Avs. Why you may ask? Foote is actually the last of the reasons. One, the Avs have been like that mean older brother who continually beat you. We just couldn’t solve them…until Hitchcock came around, and we got rid of old Footer. Second, this is a team we needed to beat, and losing all the games against the Coyotes we had to sweep someone and we just got lucky that it was someone who we hate as much as we hate the Avs.

Klesla out 2-3 Weeks
by Bethany on 02/11/09 at 01:00 PM ET

Rusty Klesla is heading back to the IR according to Puck-Rakers. Injuries have plagued the defenseman most of this season. He suffered a separated shoulder in the game last night against the Avs. Here’s the word from Puck-Rakers.
Jackets defenseman Rusty Klesla will miss the next two to three weeks with a slight separation of his left shoulder. He was injured in the first period of Tuesday night’s 3-0 win over the Avalanche. He played eight more shifts in the second period before sitting out the third.
The Jackets probably will send Klesla back on injured reserve, where he seems to have spent most of the season with foot injuries. That might be good news for rookie goaltender Dan LaCosta.
Much more later…after classes.

Tonight the Blue Jackets have the opportunity to sweep the season series against the Avs. It can be done. The Avs are battered, and without the services of their captain, Sakic.
We have to play smart hockey. We have to play the same way we did against the Sharks.
Dan LaCosta in nets, and there may be some scratches, due to the flu which is making it’s way through everyone apparently. Methot has been hit hard and according to Puck-Rakers has lost six pounds.

Making the push
by Bethany on 02/08/09 at 11:18 AM ET

WOW. With all the injuries and illnesses that fell on us yesterday, I was tempted to just not go to the game. We were without the services of Methot and Commodore, two of our best defensemen. We were without our number one goaltenders, and were playing our fourth string guy. It didn’t look good for the Blue Jackets, playing the last of a back-to-back game against the best in the West. I got ready and headed up to Nationwide, hoping for the best, and planning for the worst. I was excited to get my first look at Devin Setoguchi.
I sat in my seat and was shocked when the Blue Jackets scored two quick goals. I watched as Dan LaCosta and the Blue Jackets defense limited the San Jose Sharks to two goals.

Thankfully yours truly was at work, and then so sick, I just went straight home to bed, only watching one period of the game. By that point we were already down 3-0. Here’s my thoughts on what is going on with the Jackets. It’s nothing profound, but, it’s just my thought.
We got comfortable.

Updates from the Jackets

hate the deadline, can’t stand it. Last year was tough on the team and fans, as our ‘captain’ forced his way out. This season we are going to be buyers, which means we’ll be getting rid of some of the players that aren’t “necessary” for the playoff push. I have been trying to come up with a few guys, but nothing really sticks out aside from Backman. I highly doubt that we will have any takers for him.
I trust Scott Howson and his decisions, so I know that if we get a good deal for a quality center, he will take it, but won’t sell the farm. And, hopefully won’t give up too many draft picks doing it.

Letting him rest…
by Bethany on 02/04/09 at 09:50 PM ET

Time to let the kid rest. It was obvious against Dallas, and it was obvious against the Blues last night, Steve Mason needs to rest!! Thankfully, Hitchcock got the message and on Friday, in Pittsburgh, Dubie gets his first start as a Blue Jacket.
Let’s talk about the game. We hit a lot of posts - but that is no excuse for the way we played. Not saying anything bad about a team that is able to play a pretty style of hockey, but we aren’t that team. We don’t win hockey games with that. We win by outworking the other team and playing a “weighty” game.

Rusty is back! And, Steve Mason is feeling much better so he will be making his 19th consecutive start tonight. The Jackets are taking on the St. Louis Blues who lost in a shootout to Detroit last night.
Backman and OKT are the scratches on defense for tonight. Picard has cleared waivers and is now heading to Syracuse.
The Blues always play well against us, and we should go into this game expecting the Blues to play a “weighty” game. The Blue Jackets have always struggled against the teams they should beat, but at home, we shouldn’t in theory have that issue.

Mono, a loss, and a not so fun night
by Bethany on 02/01/09 at 12:28 PM ET

Well, that explains, uhm, everything. Steve Mason was pulled last night for the first time in his short NHL career. Steve Mason has mono. Mononucleosis is absolutely awful, trust me, if you’ve never had it, then you have no idea how bad it is. I suffered through it in 7th grade. I was in and out of school for a month, and even when I came back I was still doing half days for a few weeks.
I don’t really feel comfortable with Mason in net, if he’s dealing with mono. He needs to rest, and really should not be playing. These quotes really don’t help me either.
“Our doctors feel he’s had it for a while and they feel he’s on the other side of the virus,” Howson said. “The worst of it is probably over.”

Notes for the game tonight:
Mason vs Turco in net.
Commodore isn’t angry with any of the Stars, which is kind of unfortunate considering his play when he is angry..
We are competing with the Stars for a playoff spot, even though Cat promised me the Stars playoff spot earlier in the season.
Not, that I am mad that Mason is starting, but I want to see Dubie.

Wow, the Blue Jackets are currently sitting at fifth in the western conference. That’s crazy!!! I unfortunately was unable to see the game, except the third period. I did see the highlight with the goal from Jake Voracek, and I of course saw the result of the game. 1-0 Jackets. Steve Mason recorded his seventh shutout of the season. That’s something to be proud of. I fully expect Mason to get the start tomorrow, but you never know with Hitchcock. Also, I love this quote from Mason:
“Not really. The most important thing for myself is getting into a playoff position. We did that tonight, and we just want to keep moving forward with it. Shutouts are nice to get on a personal note, but they don’t really mean anything in the end.”

Rick Nash is for real. He’s the best captain that this franchise has ever known. He never gives up, and is always willing to do what it takes to make his team win. So let’s take a trip down memory lane with Nash.
What I love the most is that he hugs everyone, like seriously everyone around him.

Nash beats Wings
by Bethany on 01/27/09 at 11:49 PM ET

The Wings were without two of their best players, and lost another player during the game. Rick Nash took advantage of the situation, and carried the Blue Jackets into victory. Nash scored a short-handed goal, a power play goal, and an even strength goal in OT, to give the Jackets two crucial points. What a game.
The Jackets came out flying, but Hossa scored on the power play to give the Wings a lead. The Blue Jackets hopped on their captains back, and followed his lead, and won the game. Mason had a decent night, but he wasn’t the story, for the first time this season.

Back to the season…

Your friendly Blue Jackets blogger took the All-Star break off, sort of, to get some much needed rest. It was however unintentional, I just needed a break…from everything.
If you want my thoughts on what is going on with the Red Wings vs. the NHL, I think it’s great…only because they will miss a game against my boys. However, it’s not fair, and a player should not be forced to go to the All-Star Game, or to do as Crosby did. If they feel it is in their best interest to skip the game, then they should. Lidstrom is one of the classiest players in the NHL, and I would much rather have him in a regular season game (even against my team) than serving a suspension for not showing up at the All-Star Game. If Mason was suspended for skipping out of the YoungStars game, I would be throwing a fit also.

A Look at the Jackets
by Bethany on 01/24/09 at 12:50 AM ET

The lonely Blue Jackets representative, Rick Nash, is enjoying his time in Montreal. While Nash is getting his All-Star on, the rest of the boys will be spread out throughout the world, and I, well I will still be here, working, going to school, and blogging of course.
So, what I want to do tonight is look at what has been going on with the Jackets, lots have changed, lots has stayed the same. Let’s think about the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Steve Mason has emerged as one of the best goaltenders in the league. Because of him, the Jackets are in a playoff race, a legitimate playoff race, ya know one when their captain won’t leave them. Pascal Leclaire had a brutal season, his nagging ankle injury has been an issue since he got Boogied in the preseason. Poor guy. Freddy Norrena and Wade Dubielwicz switched places, Dubie was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jackets, in a gutsy move by Scott Howson.

Time for a Break
by Bethany on 01/22/09 at 02:16 PM ET
Comments (0)
Entering the All-Star Break the Columbus Blue Jackets are sitting in 10th place in the Western Conference, two points out of eighth, and four points shy of the fifth place Coyotes, with a game in hand. Last night, the Blue Jackets lost in a skills competition to the Calgary Flames. They went 1-1-1 in their Western Canadian swing, not too bad for an injury ridden team. Those injuries even go to our rookie goaltender, who had to drop out of the YoungStars game due to back spasms. You could tell last night he wasn’t 100% and was probably exhausted after his fifteenth straight start.

Bad news, and ZERO points
by Bethany on 01/21/09 at 01:27 AM ET

Pascal Leclaire is finished for the season. So, what do we do? We keep going. Mason is carrying our team right now, he’s the goaltender that we are going to make the playoffs with, we just need to go for it. I hate that Leclaire is injured, I honestly do. But, I think he will come back next season, and will be a valuable asset for us. I know, people are saying he’s just playing the backup role, but I think we still need him for next season. We have Dubie for this season.
Steve Mason is backing out of the YoungStars game. He is having back spasms, which explains a lot. He will use the time to rest, and get health. The kid needs a break, I don’t even remember the last time he had a night off. Maybe tomorrow in Calgary Dubie will play, just to give him an extra game. I heard that the NHL big guys are not too pleased with the decision to skip Montreal, but I don’t blame Howson, Hitch or Mason. It’s about the team, not some game, that doesn’t even matter.

Wow. What a game last night. I don’t have time for a real post, so this will have to do for now, but I promise it will be worth it.
*The game last night was absolutely ridiculous, way too many goals were scored, but in the end we somehow prevailed, and in the shootout to boot. I am impressed.
*Rick Nash was a monster last night. Nash had a goal and two assists and a goal in the shootout to seal the victory for the Jackets. Nash is now the all-time leading scorer for the Columbus Blue Jackets. He is now one point ahead of David Vyborny. Vyborny had 317 points in 543 games. Nash now has 172 goals and 146 assist in 404 games all as a Blue Jacket. Here’s to many more points to come!

Jackets in Vancouver

Nash is back, that means we are returning Craig MacDonald to Syracuse. This is good news for Jackets fans, we are finally beginning to get healthy.
Nikita Filatov is a healthy scratch simply because Hitch wants him to stay safe. The Vancouver game will be an intense battle - as always. The Canucks have lost six straight at home, and are on a four game losing streak right now. This is also a HUGE game because the Canucks are three points ahead of us in the standings, the Jackets have two games in hand.
With Nash back that means the top line of Nash-Umberger-Huselius could be back together. But, I don’t see it happening, at least not with the way Malhotra is playing.
Oh, and Mason is in net…does that actually need to be written?
I am going to have a Live Blog tonight, starting at 7:45 EST, so Canucks and Jackets fans can join together for the fun! It’s attached to this post.

Dubie!

I’m busy for a day and look what happens. In a move that I love, Scott Howson claimed goaltender Wade Dubielewicz off of waivers from the New York Islanders. It was a gutsy move, but one we had to make. We needed more goaltender depth desperately, Howson saw that, and did what was best for the organization. If you want to make friends, an NHL General Manager is probably not the job you want. I am sure that the Islanders aren’t pleased, but what can you do?
Is Dubie happy? Probably not.
Am I? Yes.

Goal or No

The NHL War Room wouldn’t answer the call. The Fox Sports Ohio crew was told they could get the war room on the air - and were told later, that with their seven games going on, they were too busy to have a discussion. Toss that onto the bad officiating, and well, it all equals zero points for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
I don’t blame Mason. I don’t blame Umberger. I don’t blame anyone for this loss. The Jackets played a good game, but when a goal goes to Toronto, we don’t get the calls.. It’s come to be expected. I don’t know what else to say.
Here’s the video, thanks Chris!

The Columbus Kids
by Bethany on 01/16/09 at 10:43 AM ET

The kids are taking over. This team has been getting draft picks galore since joining the league, and now, it’s paying off. It all starts in net.
Pascal Leclaire - Steve Mason - Pazzy earned his spot last season, but this season has been all about Steve Mason. Mason who is leading the league in GAA (1.80) and shutouts (6), is playing like a veteran. He has settled the team down, and has been dependenable. Mason is doing what Pascal Leclaire did last season - only better. I know there is a lot of talk about trading Pazzy but unless it is for a big name center, I don’t see a point. We obviously don’t have the goaltender depth that we need, and it would hurt us more than help.

Williams is Welcome
by Bethany on 01/15/09 at 04:19 PM ET

To clarify, I never said that Jason Williams would be the big key to making the playoffs - but he is a step in the right direction. Our power play, is at best pathetic. We needed a power play specialist and that is exactly what he is. One third of his production was produced on the power play, according to Michael Arace. So please, try to explain how that is not an improvement from what we had.
Here is a video from practice today. They talk to Huselius, Voracek, and Williams of course. I think Williams is happy to be one of the pieces to help us keep our playoff spot.

Avs are in Town
by Bethany on 01/12/09 at 10:28 PM ET

Tomorrow night is the night when the Colorado Avalanche come to Columbus. One man who won’t be on the ice for the Avs - Adam Foote, will still likely be the talk of the town. In fact, he’s been the talk for almost a year now. You see, Foote left us, five points out of a playoff spot, and apparently, Terry Frei, thinks that even though he left, we still received draft picks, so we shouldn’t be bitter. Here’s what he said:
The funny thing is, Columbus ended up getting first- and fourth-round draft choices for Foote, now 37. That’s a great deal for the Blue Jackets - one that looks more as if the Jackets made it from a position of strength, not backed-into-a-corner weakness.

Seriously? This team, is amazing. Still without the services of Nash, Brassard, and Klesla just to name a few, the Jackets pulled out a victory, that I didn’t think would be possible. The story of the night? Nikita Filatov. Forget for a moment, Steve Mason, I know, I know, it’s difficult. How good is this kid? Three goals tonight, against a great defensive team.

The make or break roadtrip is over. And, I am proud to say, that this team, missing quite a few regulars including Brassard, Nash, and Huselius, made it! The Jackets finished the six game road trip that took them from California to DC, with a 4-2-0 record. Not too bad, I honestly, couldn’t be happier with the way everything came together. We are still in the playoff race, sitting one point out, and in 10th place.

Steve Mason, too young for the All-Star game…so he’s all about the YoungStars Game.
The Capitals GM George McPhee said in the interview between periods, that Steve Mason is the Rookie of the Year right now, I agree.
The kid is leading the league in all categories, except for wins, and in my opinion, he got jipped out of the All-Star game, but what can you do.

Leclaire to IR, LaCosta up

Does this injury really impact us that much? Let’s be real here. Steve Mason has taken over the net in Columbus and it doesn’t look like that is going to change at any point anytime soon. The thing that makes me the most upset is that Norrena could in theory still be up here, and could play the role of backup.

I have to say I am proud of the effort last night from the Blue Jackets. Steve Mason stood on his head. Unfortunately Rick Nash was injured, something that I didn’t get an opportunity to see except on replays.
Nash is out for the weekend…at least. So what do you do when your captain/best player goes down? You call up Nikita Filatov of course. Filatov is coming off a great World Juniors, and will definitely add something to our roster, I mean what can it hurt?

Jackets play tomorrow in Detroit, and I am beginning to feel good about it. That has to mean something right?
Still no word on the meeting with Legein today, perhaps we will find more out tomorrow. Here’s the update from Lindsay Kramer on Legein.

What do you do when your team keeps taking injury hits?
Well, if your me, you feel sorry for yourself…really sorry for yourself.
I know I shouldn’t and I was doing well for a while but after the loss to the Blues, I just want to feel bad. Nothing like self pity I guess.

There it goes.

The four game winless streak is finished. I’m not too thrilled with the game last night. There was not a bit of rythym to it, and well, if there was, I didn’t see it.
There weren’t very many positives from the game. Four power play goals and one short-handed goal were allowed last night. On a good note, Steve Mason was not at fault for most of the goals, blame the defense who offered him no help.

Jackets in Colorado

It was so weird being out of the Blue Jackets loop for two days, and covering two teams, that are our biggest rivals. It made me realize a few things. First, I love the Columbus Blue Jackets, don’t get me wrong, I had an amazing two days, probably the best two days I have ever had, but watching them made me realize the Blue Jackets are my team. Second, I love seeing Steve Mason in net, and missing the Ducks game, was killer for me. I had some great friends who kept me updated on what was going on, but still I missed seeing my rookie goaltender post his third shutout. And, third, Chicago taxi drivers are on a mission to give you a heart attack.

Mason Rookie of the Month…Again!

According to Puck-Rakers Mason won rookie of the month for December, it’s his second month receiving the honor, and third month in a row that a Blue Jacket has received the honor, starting with Brassard in October. I will be posting more on this later, when an official announcement is made.

The Jackets are playing the Kings tonight, Mason is in net for the Blue Jackets, and Quick is in net again for the Kings. I found it interesting that Hitchcock wanted to shake things up with the goaltender and put Leclaire in, but that’s just me. Mason is riding a shutout and is obviously the hot goaltender and you have to go with that.

The Blue Jackets flew to LA today, so there wasn’t a practice, but there are still things to talk about.
More than likely we will be starting Calder candidate, Steve Mason.

Hey all! I hope you all had a happy holidays!! I am finally back into the real world which means I have a computer that is able to connect to the internet, and can actually read what has been going on with the Blue Jackets.
There are rumors going on that the Jackets are preparing to make trade, no clue with who, or for who, and who we are shopping. Anyone want Backman?

It’s not over for the Jackets, at least according to Michael Arace.
I believe him, but more on that later this evening.
Of course with Tom Reed mentioning the name Doug Weight yesterday, I thought it might be over.

Brassard Finished for the Season
by Bethany on 12/21/08 at 06:36 PM ET

Brassard’s season is over. He suffered a dislocated shoulder in his fight against Neal in Dallas. He is facing surgery that will take 4-6 months to recover.
This is a huge blow for the Jackets, who are going to be forced to make some sort of move, as we have lost the only productive center. Sorry RJ.
So, what are the Jackets going to do?
