Commodore Out for the Home Opener

The Blue Jackets will open their season against the Minnesota Wild.  They will be doing it without Mike Commodore.  He has been placed on IR with a groin pull according to Puck-Rakers.  Roy has been called up from Syracuse.  It’s a huge loss for the Blue Jackets, but let’s just hope that he isn’t out for a long period of time.

Now to the home opener.  It should be a great game.  There is some bad blood between the Wild and the Jackets, going back to the preseason when Eric Belanger boarded Chimera.  Belanger did apologize for the hit, but Chimera is standing his ground saying it was a dirty hit.  However, I think Boll said it best:

“It’s always in the back of your head,” Boll said. “We know who did it and we know what happened, but we can’t let that get in the way of getting two points. This is a huge year for the franchise and we want to get off on the right foot and that’s with a win, not trying to get back at somebody.”

Four Days and Counting…

Yesterday, the Jackets acquired Anton Stralman from the Calgary Flames for a third-round pick in the 2010 entry draft.

Stralman is exactly what the Jackets needed, in theory.  Here’s General Manager Scott Howson, on the subject:

“Anton fits a critical need on our roster,” Howson said. “He’s got puckmoving ability and power-play potential. He’s a right-(hand) shot, too, which is a nice bonus.
“He’s still a young player in the league, so he has a lot of upside, too.”

We have needed that right-handed shot for quite a while, and he has power-play potential.

Mason and More

So, while I was on my short hiatus Steve Mason was nominated for the Vezina Trophy.  Steve Mason, the rookie who lead the way for the Blue Jackets to enter in their first ever playoff.  Wow.  Mason is also nominated for the Calder.  While I am pretty sure that Tim Thomas will be taking home the Vezina, it’s great to see Mason recognized for what he accomplished this season.

“It’s an unbelievable honor,” Mason said. “When you look around the NHL and see the type of goaltenders who play in the league ... to be considered in the top three is really special.

“I know I couldn’t have done it without the players around me and without the opportunity (coach Ken Hitchcock) and (general manager Scott Howson) gave me this season.”

It’s a GAME

This honestly makes me sick to my stomach.

Peter Stenzel, 52, has been arrested and charged with inducing panic after placing at least three threatening phone calls to the Blue Jackets – specifically goaltender Steve Mason – during Thursday’s win over Calgary, The Dispatch has learned.

According to the Columbus police report, Stenzel was wearing a Calgary Flames sweater when he was arrested at his residence in Dublin. He is charged with inducing panic, a misdemeanor.

“They got his number from caller ID, and it was given to special duty officers,” Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner said. “When they got to his resident, he was upset. He’s a passionate hockey fan.”

You can read the rest here.  There are still a lot of details missing, and Portzline is going to update once he gets some more details.  I will keep you posted as well.

Comfy in Sixth

The Jackets are leaving Florida with three out of four points and have a firm grip on sixth place in the Western Conference.

But, let’s talk about the game tonight.

The Jackets looked they were ready to get back to Columbus.  They didn’t seem like they cared to be at the game, and really it was a tough game to watch.

Vermette gets the Winner

Well, now that win was nice.  The Blackhawks were tired from their game last night against the New Jersey Devils and they still managed to get a point out of tonight.

The win tonight tied a franchise record for most points in a season.  80 points and they’re sitting nicely in sixth place in the Western Conference.

The Jackets are now 5-1 with Vermette in the lineup.  He has had an immediate impact on the team, and has helped us in every situation.

Jackets Breaking Franchise Records

The records just keep falling for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

They had the biggest crowd in the history of the Columbus Blue Jackets, a whopping 19,167 people witnessed the Blue Jackets beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in a shootout.

“Somebody let in these other people today with the funny-colored sweaters,” Hitchcock said, referring to the thousands of Penguins fans. “And it screwed the sound up.”

Jackets make Franchise History

Wow, that is the perfect way to end the day!!  The Jackets set TWO franchise records tonight.  Most goals scored in a game and largest margin of victory.  The boys seemed happy, and with good reason.  Things were going exactly the way the Blue Jackets wanted and needed tonight.

So here are my thoughts on the game!

Six in Nine

Sometimes you have the highs, and then you have the lows.  The game on Saturday was one of the worst games I have ever seen the boys play.  They finished their sixth game in nine days with a loss to the Anaheim Ducks, who had played the night before.

I couldn’t be prouder of this team.  We got NINE out of a possible twelve points, that’s nothing to be ashamed of.  Back in the day, we would have considered ourselves lucky to get out of this stretch with 6 points.  But, the way we lost was what was disappointing.  They just weren’t in the game last night.

A point lost

The Jackets lost in a skill competition last night.  RJ Umberger was an absolute beast for the Blue Jackets last night.  He set a franchise record by scoring two goals 89 seconds apart.  It was a game that the Jackets should have won.  We had every opportunity to win, but we didn’t capitalize on our chances - shocker, I know.

Two times in a row

Steve Mason is back in all his glory.  I got home from work pretty excited to turn on the game, only to see the Red Wings tie it up at 2, I immediately turned off the game and made other plans.  I am pretty superstitious when it comes to things like that.  I was in the movies watching Friday the 13th when I got a text letting me know that my boys had pulled out the win.  I couldn’t have been happier.

The Jackets have beat the Sharks and the Wings twice in a row.

He’s back…

It’s Friday the 13th, the Blue Jackets have sent goaltender Dan LaCosta down to Syracuse and you know what that means…he’s back!!  Steve Mason, the Blue Jackets savior, no longer has mono, and will be starting against the Red Wings tonight.

Which I guess isn’t good news for Henrik Zetterberg.  In a recent media call here’s how it went.

Reporter: “Who has been the toughest goaltender you’ve faced this season, and why?”

Zetterberg: “Well, the toughest goaltender we faced this year you know what? I will say Columbus.”

Reporter: “Steve Mason.”

Making the push

WOW.  With all the injuries and illnesses that fell on us yesterday, I was tempted to just not go to the game.  We were without the services of Methot and Commodore, two of our best defensemen.  We were without our number one goaltenders, and were playing our fourth string guy.  It didn’t look good for the Blue Jackets, playing the last of a back-to-back game against the best in the West.  I got ready and headed up to Nationwide, hoping for the best, and planning for the worst.  I was excited to get my first look at Devin Setoguchi.

I sat in my seat and was shocked when the Blue Jackets scored two quick goals.  I watched as Dan LaCosta and the Blue Jackets defense limited the San Jose Sharks to two goals.

Letting him rest…

Time to let the kid rest.  It was obvious against Dallas, and it was obvious against the Blues last night, Steve Mason needs to rest!!  Thankfully, Hitchcock got the message and on Friday, in Pittsburgh, Dubie gets his first start as a Blue Jacket.

Let’s talk about the game.  We hit a lot of posts - but that is no excuse for the way we played.  Not saying anything bad about a team that is able to play a pretty style of hockey, but we aren’t that team.  We don’t win hockey games with that.  We win by outworking the other team and playing a “weighty” game.

Blues in Cbus

Rusty is back!  And, Steve Mason is feeling much better so he will be making his 19th consecutive start tonight.  The Jackets are taking on the St. Louis Blues who lost in a shootout to Detroit last night.

Backman and OKT are the scratches on defense for tonight.  Picard has cleared waivers and is now heading to Syracuse.

The Blues always play well against us, and we should go into this game expecting the Blues to play a “weighty” game.  The Blue Jackets have always struggled against the teams they should beat, but at home, we shouldn’t in theory have that issue.

Mono, a loss, and a not so fun night

Well, that explains, uhm, everything.  Steve Mason was pulled last night for the first time in his short NHL career.  Steve Mason has mono.  Mononucleosis is absolutely awful, trust me, if you’ve never had it, then you have no idea how bad it is.  I suffered through it in 7th grade.  I was in and out of school for a month, and even when I came back I was still doing half days for a few weeks.

I don’t really feel comfortable with Mason in net, if he’s dealing with mono.  He needs to rest, and really should not be playing.  These quotes really don’t help me either.

“Our doctors feel he’s had it for a while and they feel he’s on the other side of the virus,” Howson said. “The worst of it is probably over.”

Number 7

Wow, the Blue Jackets are currently sitting at fifth in the western conference.  That’s crazy!!!  I unfortunately was unable to see the game, except the third period.  I did see the highlight with the goal from Jake Voracek, and I of course saw the result of the game.  1-0 Jackets.  Steve Mason recorded his seventh shutout of the season.  That’s something to be proud of.  I fully expect Mason to get the start tomorrow, but you never know with Hitchcock.  Also, I love this quote from Mason:

“Not really. The most important thing for myself is getting into a playoff position. We did that tonight, and we just want to keep moving forward with it. Shutouts are nice to get on a personal note, but they don’t really mean anything in the end.”

Rick Nash leads the way

Rick Nash is for real.  He’s the best captain that this franchise has ever known.  He never gives up, and is always willing to do what it takes to make his team win.  So let’s take a trip down memory lane with Nash.

What I love the most is that he hugs everyone, like seriously everyone around him.

Nash beats Wings

The Wings were without two of their best players, and lost another player during the game.  Rick Nash took advantage of the situation, and carried the Blue Jackets into victory.  Nash scored a short-handed goal, a power play goal, and an even strength goal in OT, to give the Jackets two crucial points.  What a game.

The Jackets came out flying, but Hossa scored on the power play to give the Wings a lead.  The Blue Jackets hopped on their captains back, and followed his lead, and won the game.  Mason had a decent night, but he wasn’t the story, for the first time this season.

Back to the season…

Your friendly Blue Jackets blogger took the All-Star break off, sort of, to get some much needed rest.  It was however unintentional, I just needed a break…from everything.

If you want my thoughts on what is going on with the Red Wings vs. the NHL, I think it’s great…only because they will miss a game against my boys.  However, it’s not fair, and a player should not be forced to go to the All-Star Game, or to do as Crosby did.  If they feel it is in their best interest to skip the game, then they should.  Lidstrom is one of the classiest players in the NHL, and I would much rather have him in a regular season game (even against my team) than serving a suspension for not showing up at the All-Star Game.  If Mason was suspended for skipping out of the YoungStars game, I would be throwing a fit also.

The Columbus Kids

The kids are taking over.  This team has been getting draft picks galore since joining the league, and now, it’s paying off.  It all starts in net.

Pascal Leclaire - Steve Mason - Pazzy earned his spot last season, but this season has been all about Steve Mason.  Mason who is leading the league in GAA (1.80) and shutouts (6), is playing like a veteran.  He has settled the team down, and has been dependenable.  Mason is doing what Pascal Leclaire did last season - only better.  I know there is a lot of talk about trading Pazzy but unless it is for a big name center, I don’t see a point.  We obviously don’t have the goaltender depth that we need, and it would hurt us more than help.

Williams is Welcome

To clarify, I never said that Jason Williams would be the big key to making the playoffs - but he is a step in the right direction.  Our power play, is at best pathetic.  We needed a power play specialist and that is exactly what he is.  One third of his production was produced on the power play, according to Michael Arace.  So please, try to explain how that is not an improvement from what we had.

Here is a video from practice today.  They talk to Huselius, Voracek, and Williams of course.  I think Williams is happy to be one of the pieces to help us keep our playoff spot.

Tons to talk about in the Jackets world!  First of all the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday to move into the eighth spot in the Western Conference.  That is HUGE for this hockey club, also, it should be known that with the win, we are guaranteed to win the season series against the Avs.

Eight Points

The make or break roadtrip is over.  And, I am proud to say, that this team, missing quite a few regulars including Brassard, Nash, and Huselius, made it!  The Jackets finished the six game road trip that took them from California to DC, with a 4-2-0 record.  Not too bad, I honestly, couldn’t be happier with the way everything came together.  We are still in the playoff race, sitting one point out, and in 10th place.

Steve Mason, too young for the All-Star game…so he’s all about the YoungStars Game.

The Capitals GM George McPhee said in the interview between periods, that Steve Mason is the Rookie of the Year right now, I agree.

Does this injury really impact us that much?  Let’s be real here.  Steve Mason has taken over the net in Columbus and it doesn’t look like that is going to change at any point anytime soon.  The thing that makes me the most upset is that Norrena could in theory still be up here, and could play the role of backup.

I have to say I am proud of the effort last night from the Blue Jackets.  Steve Mason stood on his head.  Unfortunately Rick Nash was injured, something that I didn’t get an opportunity to see except on replays.

Nash is out for the weekend…at least.  So what do you do when your captain/best player goes down?  You call up Nikita Filatov of course.  Filatov is coming off a great World Juniors, and will definitely add something to our roster, I mean what can it hurt?

Four in a Row!

The new Columbus Blue Jackets apparently don’t care about the fact that The Pepsi Center is not always kind to us.  The Jackets went into the game struggling, and then once Steve Mason’s franchise record shutout streak was broken, something clicked, they got mad, and they took over.  They dominated the play and ended up rolling to a 6-1 victory.  Goals were scored by Commodore, Umberger, Voracek, Nash on the penalty shot, and Huselius with two.

Mason in Net…Again.

So, with yesterday being my last day of vacation so to speak, I took a day off blogging, and did a ton of homework that I had neglected over Thanksgiving break.  I don’t want to talk much about the game on Saturday, other than it was a convincing win.  Not only did the defense shut down Ovechkin, but Steve Mason was a brick wall and stopped all the shots he faced.  He dazzled the fans with his glove hand, his pad saves, and just all around perfect performance.

The Rematch…or something like that.

It’s time for revenge from a game that was played two weeks ago.  An embarassing home effort with an even more embarassing loss, we didn’t play in front of rookie goaltender, Steve Mason.  Tonight, we need this win.  The last two games at home have been absolutely brutal and tonight it’s time to change that.

Mason is in net tonight, I expect him to have a great game, coming off of his first NHL shutout.  Pascal Leclaire will be backing him up.  Hopefully someday soon we will have a decision on the three headed goalie monster that we have going right now.

Derick Brassard is leading the rookies with 7 goals and 8 assists.  Here’s what he says to the people who are loving him in their hockey pools:

“Some people have told me, ‘Oh, I made the right choice to pick you in my pool,’ and I say, ‘Wait, there’s 82 games in the season,”’ he said with a laugh Thursday.

Brassard has been helping me out most nights in my hockey pool, especially considering my “number 1” goalie, has been in and out with a sprained ankle.  Yes, I’m lookin at you Pazzy.

Brutal.

That game last night, was awful, no, it was brutal.  It was pathetic.  Hitch described the game the best.

“We didn’t compete. We wanted the game to be easier than it was… lost too many board battles, front of the net battles and light on the puck. (The effort) disappoints (me). It was definitely a team lost. The one thing that concerns me was we hung that young guy(Mason) out to dry – the breakaways and two-on-ones we gave up, we haven’t done that all year. You have to compete to score in this league – if you don’t compete you don’t score.”

Steve Mason, Second Star

Steve Mason was named Second Star of the Week, and rightfully so.  Our rookie goaltender has three wins in his first three NHL starts with a .907 save % and a 2.60 GAA.  Like I said before the team is playing in front of him, and his calm demeanor helps the team a lot.  Norrena is one of my favorite players, but when he lets in a goal he gets extremely rattled and that shows, in the team, and obviously him.

Nothing like a Saturday Night Hockey Game!

First of all, before I even TALK about the game, I need to talk about all the wonderful people I was able to meet tonight!  We had great seats, and were sitting next to a couple from LA, and before the puck dropped we already struck up a friendship.  It was their first hockey game, and I’m telling you, they couldn’t have hand chosen a better one.  After the first period I was able to run down and meet Elisa, who I have been e-mailing forever, and meet her and her husband Andy.

I have sat by some rotten people at games, really negative ones, and to sit next to positive happy people, was a welcome change.

I’m telling you, there is something special about seeing two of your favorite teams play.  It never grows old.  Tonight I was actually able to attend the game, and there were a bunch of Canadiens fans, which made for a great atmosphere, and it may not have been a sell out, but the crowd was really into the game.

The Jackets had a rough first period and Steve Mason was an absolute wall, and we were really lucky to be at 1-1 leaving the first.  The Habs outshot us 19-8 in the first period.  Here’s what Hitchcock had to say about Mason in the first period.

“The first period was excellent. You are going to need your goalie some nights (and tonight) we looked like we had the stare going – we looked like we were in awe of the stage or just watching. We needed him in the first period and he came up big and then we started to play.”

A Roller Coaster

Alright Jackets fans, I had my volleyball game last night and so I missed the first period, and part of the second.  I missed the first three goals of the hockey game.  So, I can’t really tell you what happened or who did what in the first bit.  I do know this Derick Brassard is probably one of the best hockey players I have ever seen, even if he was still battling the flu a little bit.

Steve Mason, playing in his first NHL game, and fourth game since he went down in April, let in four goals, but did what he had to do and got us the win.  He kept his cool and didn’t let it bother him that he let in those two quick goals from Edmonton.  Mason is going to be a solid goaltender for us in the VERY near future, and it was nice to finally see him on the ice, in a Jackets uniform.  Tomorrow he will be facing Jaroslav Halak in goal when we play the Montreal Canadiens.  Here’s Mason on the last 1:19 of the game:

As you know, Steve Mason, is coming up to the Blue Jackets.  Pascal Leclaire will be out longer than expected, and Norrena hasn’t been that good for us, and Dan LaCosta hasn’t been given a chance, and was sent down when Mason was called up.  Mason is not expected to play tomorrow night against the Oilers but start either Friday or Saturday.

Aaron Portzline spoke to Scott Howson and Coach Hitchcock about Mason’s call up, and here’s part of it via the Crunch Hockey Blog.

Mason to Debut!!

Steve Mason is making his professional debut tonight in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  How excited am I?  Very excited.  With Pazzy having so many ankle issues, it makes fans excited for that goaltender of the future.  Also playing for the Crunch tonight are Nikita Filatov and Kris Russell.  Scott Howson will be in attendance, not just for Mason, but to get a look at Filatov and Russell.

In other exciting news Raffi Torres could be playing as soon as Saturday.  That is a big deal for our hockey club.  Getting Torres healthy is a big step in getting the club going again.  Torres may not be a big scorer, but he’s a big scorer and is a huge energy guy.  With Torres likely coming back that means that we will be losing a winger…who will it be Picard or Dorsett?  Only time will tell, but Picard has to be put through waivers in order to be sent to Syracuse.

Mason to Syracuse

Steve Mason has been sent to the Syracuse Crunch.  According to Lindsay Kramer he will be backing up on Friday night, and they’re not sure if he is going to play Saturday or not.  According to Portzline, he is not going to play this weekend, you don’t want to push him into that, especially since he hasn’t seen game action since he injured his knee in April.

“The knee feels great. It’s just a matter of getting my timing,’’ he said before leaving Columbus on Thursday. “I didn’t get a whole lot of practice time in Columbus. I’m looking forward to getting some practice in Syracuse. Right now, I just have to get comfortable on the ice again.’‘

Good luck Steve, all of us are rooting for you to be in a Blue Jackets sweater sooner rather than later.  To make room for Mason, Sebastian Dahm has been sent to Johnstown.

The Blue Jackets Help

Sometimes, you don’t need to worry about the goals, the shutouts, and the struggling defense, you need to worry about something else.  Today the Blue Jackets helped out Flashes of Hope.  It’s a non-profit organization that takes photographs of children fighting cancer and other potentially fatal diseases.  Rick Nash, Fredrik Modin, Jared Boll, and Jason Chimera went in to take pictures with the kids.

I think this is something that everyone can relate to.  We all know someone who has been affected by a life threatening disease.  For me, it was my Uncle, who passed away three years ago in February with complications stemming from his leukemia.  It was a great way for the Blue Jackets to do something meaningful and to help these kids have a reason to smile, in the toughest time of their young lives.
