Rockin’ His Speedo

It seems Sean Avery survived his infamous summer Vogue internship and would love to do it again next summer. “I learned a ton.  I was surrounded by some of the greatest minds in American fashion and in the world.”

So, what’s next? According to People’s mag rag:

For now, Avery said he’s looking forward to hitting the beach, where he’ll be showing off some of the fashion sense that rubbed off on him during his internship.

“I’m bringing the European flavor back to America,” he says, “and I’m rocking a straight Speedo all summer.”

Lucky us.

The Imaginary Draft Pick

I often worry I should start a blog subject-category entitled “Things Everyone Else Probably Knows Yet Alanah Never Heard Of.”  Case in point…

Today, perusing Sabretooth House (and enjoying Anne’s entertaining indictment of Alexander Daigle and the blunders of the Ottawa Senators on draft day 1993) I came across this tidbit from Sabres’ draft history 1974: the drafting of Japanese superstar, Taro Tsujimoto.

Who?

On the off-chance that I’m not the only person who somehow missed out on this awesome bit of hockey history, here’s the story:

Getting Cuthberted

This caught my eye at The Universal Cynic today. Says Erin Nicks:

Good God—even being gazed upon by Elisha Cuthbert looks like it requires a dose of amoxicillin immediately afterward.

Check out the photo—it made me laugh.

Wanna Wii?

A moderately-quiet day in hockey news but there was this note from the NHL today:

image2K Sports [...] today announced that the next iteration of the popular hockey franchise, NHL 2K9, will be coming to the Wii™ console from Nintendo this fall. As the first and only officially licensed NHL and NHLPA video game for Wii, NHL 2K9 will offer fans the fun opportunity to play like the pros using the Wii Remote™ controller as a hockey stick, and enjoy playing hockey in a wholly unique and entertaining experience like never before.

“Nintendo is thrilled to have 2K Sports’ NHL 2K9 on the Wii platform this season,” said Steve Singer, VP of Licensing at Nintendo of America Inc.  “This title has been highly anticipated by our Wii consumers who will now be able to use the Wii Remote to face-off, play hockey, and fire a slap shot in their living rooms.”

I’m not an avid gamer, but this news just made me a bit poorer—I swear I’m buying a Wii, just for this thing.

As Steve Tilley said in the Calgary Sun back when the Wii was first introduced: “How cool would it be to grip the Nintendo Wii’s motion-sensing controller like the handle of a hockey stick, miming wrist shots and one-timers and maybe the odd crippling cross-check…?”

Awesome. Although I fully expect people are gonna hurt themselves…

Update 12:20pm PT: Photo of the game cover, courtesy of the NHL…

Because I Just Can’t Ignore It…

The CBC notes:

Stephen Colbert is every bit as passionate about The Hockey Theme as Canadians it seems, promising to license “the most precocious Arctic treasure of all” for use in the United States.

Video is below—and it’s fun but this whole continuing saga really makes me wonder what TSN/CTV was thinking, buying this theme music up. While people may one day come to identify the jingle as being associated with their network, I’m not sure hockey fans will ever hear it without thinking of Hockey Night in Canada.  After all, the music is nearly-synonymous with that iconic Saturday night game, not simply the NHL.

So at the end of the day, didn’t TSN just spend whatever-number-of-millions to buy a song that advertises their own network rival? Just a thought.

Anyway, without further adieu, the madness of Stephen Colbert:

The Problems With Cross-Training

Breaking news from Matthew Hogan at the Bleacher Report: the NFL’s Terrell Owen signs with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

After hearing of Chamberlain’s supposed signing to the Cowboys, Terrell Owens felt that the team was getting a little too crowded with publicity that wasn’t focused on him, so he went to the one place where publicity is never found:the NHL.

ESPN’s Barry Melrose had the chance to sit down and ask T.O. about his choice to join one of the NHL’s most historic franchises.

Barry (BM): So, I guess the first question has to be: Why Toronto?
Terrell (TO): Well, you know they was one of the Original Eight clubs…
BM: Six.

Read the rest to find out Owens’ reaction when Melrose explains the NHL’s salary cap to him.  Much fun.

What’s in a Name?

This headline and story caught my eye today:

Swan turns down Ducks’ contract

Bryce Swan has turned down a contract offer from the Anaheim Ducks and will re-enter the NHL draft.

Anaheim assistant general manager David McNab confirmed that Swan, a second-round pick (38th overall) of the Ducks in 2006, didn’t sign by yesterday’s 6 p.m. deadline.  It’s the second-straight year Swan, a Halifax Mooseheads forward, has turned down a Ducks offer, McNab said.

I suppose Swan’s disinterest in Anaheim is probably about something besides the irritation of endless future headlines like “Swan Swims with Ducks” and “Swan Turns Into Duck” and god-only-knows-what-else… But if it were just about the team name, could you really blame the guy?

That would have to be on par with Satan signing with the Devils…

Thanks for the Research

From hockey fan Captain Salamander on Gabby’s Gobbledygook, complete text of his blog post today:

Separated at Birth?

You know those side by side photos of celebrities and regular folk who look remarkably alike? Well here’s one of two hockey players who must be identical twins.

Daniel Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks and Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks.

Those ESPN links were included by the Captain to further illustrate the spooky similarities that lead to this breakthrough realization of his.

I only wish I could have been there for the final epiphanies. Probably went something like: “Hold on—they even have the same birthdays. I’m starting to see a pattern developing!”

Awesome.

Kirk Maltby is Laughing at You

As soon as I saw this photo, all I could think of was the thousands of Colorado Avs fans (among others) with long memories who’d want to catapult their computers through a plate glass window as soon as they saw it.

But I figure, rather than damage your pricey technology, why not just caption it in your own special way? smile

About Canucks & Beyond

Alanah McGinley has been blogging hockey since 2003 (with a notable gap in time through 2010, kicking it with new baby Lucy while living knee-deep in chaos while reading “parenting for complete idiots” during every spare minute) sharing opinions, rants and not-so-deep thoughts with anyone who will listen.

In addition to writing Canucks & Beyond and helping manage Kukla’s Korner, Alanah was one of the founders and co-hosts of The Crazy Canucks Podcast.  She has contributed pieces to FoxSports.com and the New York Times Slapshot blog, as well as other stray destinations in cyberspace.

So that’s me. Who the hell are you? smile
