Because I Just Can’t Ignore It…

The CBC notes:
Stephen Colbert is every bit as passionate about The Hockey Theme as Canadians it seems, promising to license “the most precocious Arctic treasure of all” for use in the United States.
Video is below—and it’s fun but this whole continuing saga really makes me wonder what TSN/CTV was thinking, buying this theme music up. While people may one day come to identify the jingle as being associated with their network, I’m not sure hockey fans will ever hear it without thinking of Hockey Night in Canada. After all, the music is nearly-synonymous with that iconic Saturday night game, not simply the NHL.
So at the end of the day, didn’t TSN just spend whatever-number-of-millions to buy a song that advertises their own network rival? Just a thought.
Anyway, without further adieu, the madness of Stephen Colbert:

Well no, I’m not going to argue CBC is that smart… just that the result sort of seems to have worked out that way.
I mean, if they can’t have the song for themselves, at least someone else will be broadcasting their recognizable brand on their behalf.

I wonder if Colbert paid her $500 for using the song?

There is no “her”. The theme was owned and licensed by a for-profit corporation called Copyright Music and Visuals. This purely a case of corporate greed.

Ah, Stephen Colbert. A good Southern boy who loves him some hockey.

Devin, CTV owns the rights to the song and they also have the rights to air Colbert Report. I’m sure CTV wouldn’t sue Colbert because they are partners.

It’s possible that they’re protected under fair use as well, considering they were using it for satire.

wow…did you guys see my wink?
but since you want to go there…
@Downtown - Copyright Music & Visuals is a Toronto agency representing the song’s composer, Dolores Claman, Dolores used to receive $500 each time CBC used the theme song…Dolores is the “her” to which I was referring, if the “joke” was lost on you, I’m sorry, I’ll type more s-l-o-w-l-y next time.
@bcrt2000: the Colbert show aired Tuesday evening, about 24 hours after CTV announced they bought the rights. I would be willing to guess that the bit on the Colbert Report was at least planned prior to the deal and possibly even written before the deal (seeing as there was no mention of the fact that it was bought by CTV, in fact, the CTV purchase kind of kills the whole joke that Colbert was delivering, no?)
Again…did you not see the winking smiley?
wow

So the CBC essentially got their rival to pay to advertise for them. That would make CBC ridiculously smart. I don’t know…seems pretty far fetched…
