Bite Me, Tiger

For fun, (and because I have some strange, pathological dislike of golf; enter the words ‘alanah hates golf’ into Google.com and I’m the #1 search result...) I ran a search online using Google Trends to see what’s more popular these days in the online world: the PGA or the NHL?
It’s the NHL.
In the last 30 days, everywhere in the world (with the exception of one-24 hour period in the United States last month) more people searched out NHL info than PGA.
Maybe not 100% accurate, or even a fair comparison given the time of year. But what the hell… it’s Google. They know their search terms and I like graphs.
So in honor of Tiger, another way of comparing the sports (*click the images to for further details):
In the United States

In Canada

Worldwide

I think your comparison need to include a longer time period to be a good reflection on the popularity of the two sports. You have to understand that Tiger Woods at a tournament really cranks up the ratings, and he hasn’t played since mid April.
PLEASE, WINGS, GET IT DONE!

shane,
its sort of like the game PIG in basketball, only you play it on grass. What makes it really hard is that every shot is completely uncontested..

Christine - Fair point. But the same trend stands true if you go back for 12 months. The last time the PGA came out ahead - even in the U.S. - was July, 2007. (And you’re right - it was because of Tiger.)

Alanah from beautiful British Columbia,
Glad you did your homework on this one. Maybe we’re being a little hard on Tiger, though, and his comments. He is actually a good friend of Wayne Gretzky, and sometimes he says things maybe jokingly that don’t come across that way. Maybe this was one of those times (I hope). He really is a nice guy, at least most of the time, and is a very generous man. I’ll certainly give him a break on this one.
THANK YOU RED WINGS!!!!!

I hate golf. And I love data - that’s freakin’ awesome. I had no idea google could do that(clearly not very literate here, it’s a wonder I can post this comment).
Too bad there’s no reliable way to simlulate what that graph would look like w/o LittleGary’s lockout…

Let the fun continue. I agree graphs are fun!
nhl, sex
nhl, God
nhl, LPGA
OK not the LPGA but I still like chick golf.
Select Canada rather than the USA. Interesting to see the differences in us eh. Explain nhl, NASCAR if you can.
Ciao,

Alanah, you really haven’t been playing golf the right way. Sure there’s a lot of swinging that steel thing but you also get to enjoy BEER! Lots of Beer!

mmmm… beer.
But wait: I can drink beer watching a hockey game. And with less mosquitoes.
