Bouwmeester—Canucks Speculation Thread

There’s rumors everywhere and they’re getting more prevalent every hour. Rumors fom inside GM Place, to everywhere on the internet and more conventional media, Jay Bouwmeester-to-the-Canucks is the issue that won’t go way.  If nothing else, it seems clear that Mike Gillis is in serious pursuit mode.

I’ll update this post with anything Bouwmeester/Vancouver related over the coming hours.

First up, from ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun:

Just heard from inside the Panthers’ war room and they’re still no closer to making a call on Bouwmeester. We’re told Vancouver and Philadelphia charging hard on Bouwmeester.

Update 10:33am PT: Jason Botchford of The Province comments on Twitter:

Bouwmeester rumour mill: Flor and Canucks have agreed to Raymond and a first, but the Flor wants something significant added.

Update 10:49am PT: Rumors (from the MSM, no “bloggers in their parents basements,” I promise you, James Duthie!) of Vancouver’s possible side of the deal involve such notables as Cody Hodgson, Kevin Bieksa, Mason Raymond, first round pick(s), etc. A few others came my way, too, but I can’t recall all the madness. (And most are indeed mad).

Update 11:24am PT: Courtesy of John B. and The Score:

Per the Globe&Mail: Mike Gillis laughed when I asked him about Kevin Bieksa, Mason Raymond and a pick to Florida for Bouwmeester.

Update 12:14pm PT: According to media at GM Place, the Canucks have officially announced they made no trades today.

I’ve got no problem with that. We’ve taken so much away from Florida in the past… it’d be a shame to actually have to ever give them anything. wink

Hodgson is one guy I can’t see them trading.

If it works out to be:  Grabner, Raymond and 1st rounder for Bouwmeester, I’d be okay with that.

I like Bouwmeester, but giving up Bieksa (who is playing very well) AND all of that for him is too expensive for my tastes. Then again, you have to give up quality to get quality. I can live without Grabner and Raymond.

(I don’t expect the Canucks will get him anyway)

Let’s not forget that Bouwmeester is a UFA to be. If the Canucks give up all that for him and don’t already have him agreed to a contract extension, than Gillis is a bigger idiot than Mike Milbury.

I’m happy with no moves. It’s frustrating to see Calgary get better but there is no guarantee that these moves will pay off.

I wouldn’t even do Bieksa for Boumeester.

Good for Gillis to stand pat, the team is rolling, no need to mix anything up.

jb would have made the team better for the rest of this season, but to give up that much for a rental just doesn’t make sense. i’m a bit disappointed that gillis didn’t do anything, because there’s definitely room for an upgrade in a few positions, but not at the expense of scuttling the future.
so while i’m not perfectly content with this team, no moves is better than a bad move.
