Canadian Hockey Television

From William Houston at the Globe & Mail:

A new TSN-NHL national television agreement has been delayed, leading to speculation that something has gone wrong.

It hasn’t. The deal is done, but for some minor paperwork, according to sources, and is likely to be announced next month. It will be a long-term deal, six years in length, starting next season and extending through 2013-14.

TSN will receive more games involving Canadian teams, most important of which will be extra games featuring the Toronto Maple Leafs, a leading audience producer among the six Canadian NHL clubs.

And there’s lots more on Canadian coverage in Houston’s column, including Pierre McGuire’s new deal with TSN (also 6 years—a “monster” deal), plus the fact that Canadians apparently enjoyed seeing the Habs instead of the Leafs last Saturday night on CBC’s HNIC, to the tune of above-average ratings.  (I know I was grateful for the change...)

Houston also mentions that ESPN Classic Canada will be airing a 12-hour tribute to the recently-deceased Don Wittman this coming Saturday, showcasing his work on CBC Sports spanning five decades.

You know I remember a time when the Leafs were more horrible than they are now, season in and season out (Detroit stunk then too) and they would still show every Leaf game on Saturday night nation wide, even though there were way more compelling matchups available in local CBC markets.

I’m not going to slam the leafs (too easy) or CBC, but in those days when the Leafs made their regular season exit, you half expected CBC to go split screen in the playoffs to show the leafs playing slow pitch or golf while the playoffs were going on.  Harold Ballard must be laughing in his grave to see that not much has changed.  Was he buried in the same casket as King Clancey? JK JK.

6 more years of McGuire?  Hopefully they have some sort of “volume clause” in his contract.

Maybe as soon as he hits 100 decibels, his mic gets cut off?

Martin -- Yes, I guess us non-Leafs fans have to be somewhat practical and acknowledge that the team does have a huge helping of fans across the country, and that creates ratings for CBC.  I’m just glad the Habs were able to do so well—perhaps it will encourage a bit more diversity programming that first Saturday night game.

But I have to admit, now I’m sort of looking forward to the idea of a split screen with the Leafs’ golf game during the playoffs. That just sounds like fun for everyone...!

Shane -- Two words for you: mute button. I find it handy in all sorts of hockey situations. Greg Millen inspires me to use it frequently… smile
